ADOLF HITLER'S COPY OF HOFFMANN'S 'MIT HIMMLER IN POLEN' Adolf Hitler's personal copy of the specially-bound collection of Heinrich Hoffmann photographs: 'Mit Hitler in Polen', by Heinrich Hoffmann and Wilhelm Keitel (Berlin: Zeitgeschichte-Verlag), 1939, 94pp. 4to., a collection of propaganda and documentary photographs chronicling the German invasion of Poland and its aftermath. Includes many images of Hitler touring the carnage he had created. Bound in pebbled red leather boards with a large gilt eagle, swastika and title on the front cover. The verso of the cover bears an authentic example of Hitler's engraved bookplate, indicating that this book most likely came from the Chancellery or the Berghof. The lower part of the cover and spine bear a significant burn, damage possibly incurred at the Chancellery of Berghoff during the bombings and fires at those places. A rare printing - we have seen only one other, and it too emanated from the Chancellery.
30TH SS WAFFEN-GRENADIER (RUSSIAN NO. 2) DIVISION DOCUMENTS A fascinating pair of rare documents issued by the same officer on the same day to the same SS man, promotions in both the SS and the police issued by SS-Sturmbannfuhrer WILHELM HOFFMANN (b. 1890), a former Hamburg police official and cavalryman. Both documents, each 1p. 4to., were issued in France on Nov. 9, 1944. The first, issued by Schuma-Brigade-Polizei Battalion 60 and Polizei Battalion 57 promotes Oskar Rodler to the rank of Hauptwachtmeister and Junker for his 'courage and bravery demonstrated during front line operations before the enemy...' The second document is a promotion issued in the name of the infamous SS 30th Waffen-Grenadier (Russ. No. 2) Division. It promotes Rodler to the rank of SS-Standartenfuhrer as well as Hauptwachtmeister and Junker, for the same reasons as stated in the first promotion. Both documents bear file holes, else very good. The 30th SS Waffen-Grenadiers was formerly a Schuma battalion of collaborators and traitors, the majority Russians (with German officers), and it also included Belorussians, Ukrainians, Armenians, Tatars, Poles and at least one Czech. The division suffered from low morale and repeated desertions, and on 27 August 1944 mutineers killed all the German officers and NCOs they could find before the insurrection was put down. The remainder of the division was sent to France, and the Resistance were informed about the poor morale and equipment of the division - they promptly began making attacks on the troops. It suffered large losses, both in the fighting and through desertions. Soldiers of the division killed 39 civilians in Etobon, France on 27 September 1944 in retaliation.
