Worsley (1872-1943), a key figure in the 'Heroic age of Polar exploration', who accompanied Shackleton as his Commander on the Endurance, and helping navigate the James Caird during the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expdition 1914-1916. He was also on the Shackleton–Rowett Expedition of 1922, noting in the manuscript essay 'Adventure' (included in this lot) 'I was with him when he died in the Quest. I lost a true friend and England lost a great adventorous man'. The archive includes manuscript, printed, and photographic materials relating to his Polar adventures, but also actions in both wars, the North Russian seas, the Carribean where he led a hunt for treasure alongside his wife in the 1930s, and his involvement with promoting the film of Endurance, 1919. After Jean's death the Bamford family donated Worsley's diaries, medals and other materials to the Scott Polar Institute, and the Akaroa Museum in New Zealand, but these poignant materials have remained with the Bamford family.Provenance: Bequeathed by Worsley to his wife Jean (née Cuming, 1900-1978). Containing three most exact and excellent Bookes; the first of Hawking, the second of all the proper termes of Hunting, and the last of Armorie: all compiled by Juliana Barnes, in the yere from the incarnation of Christ 1486. And now reduced into a better method, by G[ervase] M[arkham], London: [Valentine Simmes] for Humfrey Lownes, 1595, additional section titles to parts 2 and 3 but with continuous pagination and signatures, 116 woodcut coats-of-arms with arms on R1r being a cancel, some offsetting or see-through from arms, occasional minor spotting and some very trivial pin-prick wormholes to blank marginal extremities, a few scattered blue pencil crosses to margins and a few words similarly underscored on leaves N1-3, small marginal repair not affecting text on Cc1, lacking the 4 blanks (A1 [bearing signature 'A'], L3-4 and Dd4) but skilfully replaced with near-matching slightly later paper, the first blank with inverted inscription of 'Peter Martin, his book, 1754' at foot of recto, small morocco book ticket of John L. The first book addresses falconry and provides remedies for the diseases of hawks; the second examines the hunting of deer, boar and hare and supplies a list of hunting terms; and the third book constitutes a full account of heraldry.
LEICA; an IIIf camera fitted with a Leitz Summar F=5cm 1:2 lens, with maker's cap and after market leather case. CONDITION REPORT the camera shows heavy signs of use, with pitting to the chrome, as well as loss of chrome in parts. Brassing to the shoe and the edges. Brassing to the front dial, as well as various other parts of the camera. There are light surface scratches throughout and the lens itself is in fair condition, with some light internal haze and grime. The leather case shows signs of wear commensurate with age. A 5 inch gauge diesel 'Teddy Bear' locomotive, finished in British Railways two tone green livery, No D9526 with fitted steps, handrails, lamps and couplings. The locomotive was built in 2009 from a kit supplied by Pheonix Locomotives of Southport to a design produced by Bushill Engineering Ltd. Laser cut and welded chassis steel with GRP Body. Powered by single Bosch 24 volt motor with bevel gear linkage to one axle and coupling rods to all wheels. Hand throttle control with dead man's handle. The locomotive comes complete with its own driving car containing two batteries and an electric controller. Diesel sound system.
