Essex') by Devereux, being an indenture between Devereux and John Piggott, yeoman of the Manor of Bennington, Hertfordshire, dated 17th November 1572 and the second signed ('L. Essex') by Knollys, being an indenture between the Countess of Essex and Thomas Cawne, yeoman of the Manor of Bennington, Hertfordshire, dated 11th February 1578. Both of the manuscript documents, on vellum, bear good attached wax seals. Folds, creasing, overall age wear and both with several burn holes affecting large parts of the text. FR, 2

A.L.S., W E Gladstone, three pages, 8vo, Hawarden, 29th May 1890, to Dear Sirs, presumably the publishers MacMillan & Co. Gladstone sends his correspondents a manuscript (no longer present), being 'more than one half the copy for my proposed work on Homer', adding that the remainder will follow in six weeks and remarking 'But there will be nothing in it I think to vary any judgment you might form from the present copy….You will please bear in mind that my original idea was to write for the American public….and you should print in and for America. You however suggested that there should be a sub in England also. I would now ask you to consider freely the whole case and propose to me such an arrangement as you may consider suitable.' VG In 1890 Gladstone's work Landmarks of Homeric Study, Together with an Essay on the Points of Contact Between the Assyrian Tablets and the Homeric Text was published in London and New York by MacMillan & Co.

A set of ten Regency carved rosewood dining chairs, circa 1815, almost certainly by Gillows, profusely carved throughout, the pair of armchairs with carved acorn and oak leaf brackets and klismos-shaped backs, each with green velvet upholstered drop-in seats, one stamped 'K' to the seat rail. A set made by Gillows (attributed to the London shop) of very closely relating design exists in the Tatton Park collection, Cheshire. This design was in use by 1813 as it appears in two room settings drawn for customers by Gillows of Oxford Street of this date. See pages 220 and 221, Plate 203 and 355, Plate E 16. Gillows of Lancaster and London, 1730 - 1840, Susan E. Stuart, Published by Antique Collectors Club. Elements of the carving to these chairs bear close relation to furniture supplied by Gillows to the 2nd Baron Bolton for Hackwood in 1813. The reeded leg with a carved ball knop above and volute scrolls to the arm are similar to a pair of rosewood library bergeres sold by Christie's Hackwood Park sale, 20th-22nd April 1998, Lot 55.
