He continues to refer to a letter received from the Duke, 'In all situations, and under all circumstances, the conduct of your Royal Highness will be worthy of the Rank you bear, and will confirm, and (if it be possible) strengthen the respect, and attachment, of your Country. Since I had last the Honor of seeing your Royal Highness, the subject, which is, I know, of all others the most interesting to your feelings, has been under discussion, and I cannot forbear flattering myself that they will experience no disappointment.' With integral leaf. Together with a holograph extract of the Duke of Gloucester's letter to Addington of 28th July 1801 offering his services as Commander of a Volunteer Corps in the event of war. AIREY RICHARD: (1803-1881) British General, Quartermaster General under Lord Raglan during the Crimean War. Airey issued the fateful order for the Charge of the Light Brigade. L.S., Richard Airey, one page, folio, Horse Guards, 27th August 1852, to Sir William Gomm. The manuscript letter is marked Duplicate at the head, and transmits a letter from Captain James Irving of the 1st Bengal Cavalry, by direction of the Commander-in-Chief, relating to an amount due to Irving 'for the value of a horse & gig by Captain Lambert of the 96th Regt.'. The following two pages of the letter bear a transcript of Irving's letter of 21st August 1852, in part, 'In January 1851 Capt. Lambert was marching through the station….in the Bengal Presidency where my Regiment the 1st Bengal Cavalry was stationed at that time. I was selling off my prospects with the intention of retiring from the service. Capt. Lambert came to my house and after trying some of my horses he purchased a New South Wales horse and a half panelled Gig for the sum of £120 or 1200 Rupees and promised to pay me on his arrival at the station of Lahore where his Regiment was located. He reached that station about 2 months after. I beg to state I have met Capt. Lambert's wishes in every way but he has evaded payment in such an ungentlemanly manner that I have thus forced to seek redress having left the service and consequently cannot afford to lose so large a sum.' Some small tears and minor areas of paper loss to the left edge, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise about VG Sir William Gomm (1784-1875) British Field Marshal.
MASEFIELD JOHN: (1878-1967) English Poet Laureate 1930-67. A good A.L.S., with his initials J. M., one page, 4to, Cushendun, Co. Antrim, Ireland, n.d. (late 1920s?), to Siegfried Sassoon. Masefield announces 'Will you put me down for two guineas?' and adds that he will send a cheque as soon as he returns home, continuing 'I'll square matters somehow with R[obert] B[ridges]. You can bear witness that I did pass on his remarks. A charming thought like yours ought not to be squelched.' The poet further writes 'I don't think you'll get R B to any presentation: he is in a very growly frame of mind. You will probably have to get Sir Hugh Allen, Newbolt, Binyon etc. to accompany you to Chilswell with the clarichord on a cart, & leave it with a delayed fuse to burst upon him. Good luck to your scheme.' A letter of good association and content. VG Siegfried Sassoon (1886-1967) English Poet. Robert Bridges (1844-1930) British Poet Laureate 1913-30.
