A rare set of four Victorian silver salts, by John Hardman & Company, Birmingham 1854, of fluted circular form resting on spiral fluted circular bases, with a band of engraving below the moulded rim ‘Tout Jours Prest’ with an ‘S entwining a barrel’, gilt interiors, 8cm high, 8.75 cm diameter, 17.5 oz. The motto and rebus are for the Sutton Family from West Tofts, Norfolk. These bear a close resemblance to the motto and rebus on the Minton encaustic floor tiles designed by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin which surround the Sutton tomb in St. Mary’s church, West Tofts. St Mary’s was the Sutton family’s local parish church. After Lady Mary Sutton died in 1842, the family commissioned Pugin to work on the building and to decorate the chantry chapel and tomb in her memory. Work commenced on 26th April 1849 and this private commission is seen as one of Pugin’s most notable achievements. Sir John Sutton also worked with Pugin on the restoration of the chapel at Jesus College, Cambridge. The personal relationship between Pugin and John Sutton extended to Pugin including the Sutton arms amongst those of his seven special friends that he chose to decorate around the cornice of the library at The Grange in Ramsgate. It is rare to come across domestic silver made by Hardman & Co. There is a reference to a sugar basin commissioned by ‘Sutton’ in 1858 which is mentioned in the archives of the Hardman Metalwork Designs. This sugar basin apparently bears the same motto and rebus as the salts. We would like to thank Martin Ellis, Curator of Applied Art, Birmingham Museums & Art Gallery, Mrs Sophia Tobin, The Goldsmiths’ Company Library and Mrs Catriona Blaker, The Landmark Trust and Pugin Society.
