An early 18th century silver mounted oval section lodestone with swivel finial handle, one pole with an engraved 'N' to the steel banding, width 31mm, maximum height 40mm. It is in an apparently later bent cedar box, the lid of which is indistinctly inscribed and dated 1760? (See illustration)
Group Captain Burling, a collection relating to this remarkable man, pilot, mariner and hotelier, reputedly the son of Edward VII. The collection includes a middle eastern niello enamelled cigarette box, the lid showing dancing figures, but also two R.A.F. bi-planes, this dates from his time serving at R.A.F. Seletar, Singapore, a scale model of the Group Captain's Fairey IIID no.9740, it was the first aircraft to be launched by catapult from one of H.M. ships. Group Captain Burling retired to the Isles of Scilly where he presided over Holgates Hotel, and the lot includes named pieces from that hotel. Condition Report: Silver box, some minor denting and scratches to the surface decoration.
A Japanese Hiramaki-e lacquered tobacco box (Tabaco-dansu), the rectangular box with a swing carrying handle over a silver plated cylindrical, dome lidded, swing handled container (Hi-ire), a smaller cylindrical tobacco case, the lids with butterfly finials, over two short and one long drawer, decorated with rectangular poem cards, height including handle 26cm, together with an ashtray of cylindrical form with serpentine open recess to the lid.
