A PROBABLY UNIQUE WILLIAM IV OAK 'OLD LONDON BRIDGE' SNUFF BOX C.1836 the pull-off lid relief carved with a portrait bust and inscribed 'John Hampden, Libertatis Vinder', within an oak leaf and acorn wreath, the interior with silver mounts, the main band inscribed 'This box formed from one of the Piles of Old London Bridge (founded in 1176) was Designed by & Carved for RD Hollier Greenwich by John Kelly 1836', with hallmarks for Edward Edwards, London 1836 10.6cm diameter Provenance 'A Lifetime of Collecting' - The Property of a Gentleman. Catalogue Note Richard Hollier Esq. is known to have lived in Maize Place, Greenwich and he was a member of the Numismatic Society of London in 1840. John Hampden (15951643) was an English parliamentary leader famous for his opposition to King Charles I over taxes which led to the English Civil War. He was a cousin to Oliver Cromwell and served as a colonel in the Battle of Edgehill. He was mortally wounded in a skirmish with Royalists at Chalgrove Field.

The Pemberton family were well known silversmiths and toy-makers and Samuel Pemberton III (1771-1836) could well have been the maker and distributor of these little boxed sets of medals.

A Lumière Autochrome of Major-General Sir John Hanbury-Williams (1859-1946) with a French General and a Russian Staff Officer in woodland probably at the Russian Stavka at Baranavichy in 1914, 15cm x 10cm, scratched signature bottom 'Beilbet (?)', trees behind group, barracks or similar building visible on far left, summer house behind, possibly taken at sunset - Hanbury-Williams was head of the British military at the Stavka, headquarters of the Russian general staff, in Lumière Autochrome box, expiry date October 1914, with manuscript ink annotation in period hand 'Photographs (plates) of J. & Emperor, Colored Plate too', G, a couple of blemishes, foreground area in shadow underexposed; with a quarter-plate gelatin silver copy-negative glass plate of the Czar and a British officer, probably Hanbury-Williams, in a similar woodland glade; with a copy silver-print of Czar Nicholas II with his cousin, the extremely tall (6ft 6in) Grand Duke Nicholas (known as Nicholas the Short and Nicholas the Tall), copy-images probably for the book 'The Emperor Nicholas II, as I knew him', written by Hanbury-Williams in 1922
