A gold-lacquer ryoshibako (document box) with en-suite coverBy Harui Komin (1869-1922/3), early 20th centuryLacquered in predominately gold takamaki-e, e-nashiji and kirikane, the overlapping lid decorated with the 'Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove', each standing and holding their respective attributes, with the face and head of each sage inlaid in bronze or shakudo high relief, the inside of the lid similarly lacquered with butterflies hovering over chrysanthemum shrubs growing from behind a brushwood fence beside a meandering stream rendered in gold togidashi maki-e, the inside of the box with chrysanthemum stalks supported by a bamboo fence, all reserved on a rich nashiji ground; signed inside the lid in gold lacquer Harui Komin with a seal Kiyoshi no in. 4.3cm x 22.5cm x 24.5cm (1 5/8in x 8 13/16in x 9 5/8in). In the Meiji Period he worked for the art dealer Ikeda Seisuke. After the closure of Ikeda's business in 1912, Komin went to Kyoto and later, for health reasons, to Suma. Not many works by Komin are known, largely because he rarely signed them. He worked in a classical, conservative style, predominantly executed in gold, silver and black lacquer, often with inlay of shell, metal, coral and abundant kirikane. A lacquer kobako (small box) with en-suite coverBy Taikai Tairei (1880-1971), 20th centuryThe roiro lacquer cover decorated in gold and silver hiramaki-e and takamaki-e with plum blossoms and bamboo growing on an irregular-shaped mound, with subtle details inlaid in e-nashiji and shell, the inside of the cover simply lacquered in gold and slight-red hiramaki-e with a diagonal formation of stylised cranes; the bottom and sides rendered in seido-nuri in Zeshin style, with the interior decorated with overlapping gold and silver lacquer papers; signed in gold lacquer Tairei, with tomobako signed and titled by the artist, Horai kobako, Tairei saku with a seal Tairei. 3.2cm x 10.1cm x 7.6cm (1¼in x 4in x 3in). A metal-inlaid lacquer rectangular plaqueBy Ikeda Taishin (1825-1903), Ishiguro Masayoshi (1775-1862), and Ishiguro Hiroaki (died c.1850), 19th centuryThe roiro ground decorated in gold and silver hiramaki-e and takamaki-e with an undulating landscape, pine trees in the foreground, a lake and rice fields to one side, hills in the distance and three birds in flight, overlaid in gold, silver, shibuichi and shakudo with two flying hawks, another hawk about to eat a heron it has brought to the ground and another heron flying away, signed Taishin with a seal Taishin for the lacquerwork and Juosai Masayoshi saku and Hiroaki on gold tablets for the metalwork; within a wood frame; with wood storage box. 49cm x 39.5cm (19¼in x 15½in).
