A mid-18th century silver-mounted agate tontine snuff box, maker's mark W.L only, London circa 1755, rectangular cushion form, chased foliate and scroll decoration, the underside and interior inscribed with the names and dates of death, length 7.7cm., approx. weight 4oz. Tontine is a loan given for life annuities with benefit of survivorship, so called from the inventor Laurence Tonti, a Neapolitan. There is an annuity, after a certain rate of interest, granted to a number of people, divided into classes, according to their respective ages, so that annually the whole fund of each class is divided among the survivors of that class, till at last it falls to one. Hamerani, diameter 7cm, approx. weight 3.7oz. Provenance: The Lion Collection, no. 155 Illustrated in Culme, J. British Silver Boxes 1640-1840, The Lion Collection, Antique Collector's Club, 2015, page 145. Princess Maria Sobieska (1702-1735), was the granddaughter of John II Sobieska of Poland. In 1719 she was married to James Francis Edward Stuart, ('The Old Pretender'), 1688-1766), son of the deposed James II. The couples elder son was Charles Edward Louis Philip Casimir Stuart, ('the Young Pretender'), 1720-1788, generally known as 'Bonnie Prince Charlie', who instigated the Jacobite uprising of 1745.
A George III Scottish parcel-gilt silver table snuff box, by Alexander Gardner and Co, Edinburgh 1802, oval navette form, the flush-hinged cover with an armorial, and with a presentation inscription, 'Presented by the Western Abernethy Company of Volunteers to James Grant Esq. of Birchfield their Captain', length 12cm, approx. weight 6oz. During the Napoleonic Wars, volunteer units were raised throughout the United Kingdom. In 1793 Sir James Grant raised a regiment of Fencibles almost exclusively from his own tenantry. in 1798 he raised the Strathspey Battalion of Volunteers. In Abernethy there were two Companies, the Eastern and the Western. The Western Company had a strength of 80 and their Captain was James Grant Esq. of Birchfield

Two Sampson and Mordan silver pencils, another white metal pencil and a Yard o Lead pencil (4)Condition report: The Yard O Led pencil is in good original condition with no signs of wear to the plating, the mechanism works and the box are both in good order. The Sampson Mordan pencils with the sliding actions both have overall minor knocks and marks, and some minor ripples / dents. The actions works but there are no leads.The final silver pencil (The Mordan Everpoint) has no lead and we cannot be sure the action works. It has engraved initials and minor overall nicks and dents to the body.
