The MacBeth group of family medals and related items comprising: A British War Medal, awarded to Capt I L F MacBeth, a silver plated hip flask, inscribed 'To Major I L F MacBeth RGA, from Major F J Maitland RGA, in remembrance of our Gunnery Course Golden Hill IW, 10.8.17-8.9.17', and a photograph, almost certainly of him. A group of six WWII medals, awarded to T/Major James Steward Fraser MacBeth (RA SBS), comprising a Military Cross, dated 1945 (with box), a 1939-1945 Star, Africa Star, Italy Star, Defence Medal and War Medal (MID), with miniatures, eight SAS silvered buttons, a copy of The Artists and The SAS book by B A Young, inscribed 'To Ian MacBeth from Uncle John 24 November 1968, a pewter plate, inscribed S MACBETH, 19.5 cm diameter, eight black and white photographs of MacBeth ('self'), including parachute training, with notes to reverse listing his comrades (possibly post WWII). A group of three WWII medals, awarded to Pamela Faith, who married James (known as Stewart) MacBeth, comprising a War Medal, 1939-1945 Star and an Italy Star, with box of issue, and slip, a Registration for Employment Order 1941 for Miss Faith, a large black and white photograph of her, an album of 1930s/40s black and white photographs, including travel and holidays, MTC (summer 1942 with various military vehicles and colleagues, through to Palestine 1945, Meerut 1945.46, Cairo 1946). A coromandel wood vanity box, with fitted interior and silver mounted jars, initialled, bears a plaque, C Asprey Manufacturer 166 Bond Street, 30.5 cm Condition report Report by NG Losses to brass stringing and small patches of veneer to exterior. Cover with large split from one side to the other and crossing at inlaid brass name plate, inscribed Edith, other small cracks also. Interior: the velvet inset to cover with silvered closing clasp present but detached therefore will not hold leather mounted top closed. Eight of silver covers bear matching monogram (EGM), six of these hallmarked London 1856, two bearing no hallmark, the other matched, unhallmarked, missing glass base, hallmarked London 1865. Interior lacks manicure set. Two divisions to row of five bottles broken but present. Drawer empty. Asprey brass plaque inset between two hinges.
An 18th century tortoiseshell and silver snuff box oval form, the pressed tortoiseshell lid with silver overlay, depicting a hunting scene, 3in. (7.7cm.) long, losses to overlay; together with an Edwardian silver and tortoiseshell drum-form ring box, Deakin & Francis, Birmingham 1911, with silver pique work decoration, 2in. (5cm.) diameter. (2) Condition: - Snuff box: 2/3 of silver overlay to lid missing, with some consequent losses to silver edging. Small chip to tortoiseshell just under lid at left side. Hinge in good condition. No other damage noted. - Ring box: Engraved inscription, 'Ross Tournement 1912' to front. Two small dents to edge of lid and two dings beneath to side of lid and base. Kid leather lining (possibly replaced), leather to underside hardened from age and dented upwards. Legs, pique work and hinge in good condition.
A set of two Dutch silver biscuit boxes 19th century, both with maker's mark for Pieter Pieterse, Amsterdam 1865 and retailer's mark of Bonebakker en Zoon, one of rectangular form, 5¾ x 3¾in. (14.5 x 9.5cm.), the other of circular form, 5in. (12.7cm.) diameter, the hinged covers with reeded rims, gross weight 30 tr.oz. (2) Condition: - Rectangular box: Two very small dings to one side and very small ding to front edge of lid. All marks clear. No other damage or restoration noted. - Circular box: Three small dings to back and left side and one larger dent to front. A few light scatches to sides. Marks clear. Original green baize to base of both boxes, which is faded and stained in places and has some wear to the edges (but no tears or holes).
A George VI silver cigarette box Walker and Hall, Sheffield 1940, of plain rectangular form, centralised raised graduated thumbpiece to front, inscribed with letter 'A' to lid, 7 x 3½in. (17.8cm. x 8.9cm.). Condition: 5mm light dent to front left corner, several small indents appear to lid and sides of box.
An Edwardian silver stamp box Arthur Cook, Birmingham 1902, rectangular form, floral and scrolling foliate engraving with plain silver cartouche holding the initials 'E.M.', hinged lid, gilt interior with two stamp holders, 3 x 1¾in. (7.6 x 4.5cm.), weight 1.4 tr.oz. Condition: Two solder marks to right side, maybe from once being attached to chatelaine.
An Edwardian oval silver and enamel pill box Birmingham 1911, maker's mark rubbed, with turquoise guilloche design to lid, 2¼in. (5.7cm.) long; together with a silver filigree pill box, 1¼in. (3.3cm.) diameter; an Indian urn form pepper, 2½in. (6.4cm.) high; and an .800 silver trinket box, 1¾in. (4.5cm.) square. (4)
A Japanese takamakie lacquered fan shaped kogo box Meiji period, with detachable lid, decorated with silver relief and mother-of-pearl islands on a takamakie sea, the base with conforming decoration of lake walkways and irises, the lid underside decorated with mother of pearl birds in flight, the base interior and underside in nashiji lacquer, 7 x 4¼in. (17.75 x 10.75cm.). Condition: Tiny pin prick chips to gilt on upper surface of lid, two small chips to 'Fan guard' edge, 6 x 5mm piece missing to interior rim wall, 2mm chip left side of rim wall.
