An extremely rare 18th century Channel Islands silver mounted cowrie snuff box, maker's mark IH without crown struck once to underside of lid (unknown, Guernsey, fl.c.1727-1783), also engraved with initials 'MSBK', the exterior of the hinged lid with engraved floral and foliate motif and small thumbpiece to edge, the base of the shell with scalloped silver mount to rim, 3¼in. (8.25cm.) long. * This is believed to be only the second piece of Channel Islands silver mounted with a cowrie shell. The other example is a cowrie shell spoon by Guillaume Henry of Guernsey, illus. Plate 2, 'Channel Islands Silver', exhibition catalogue, Guernsey Museum & Art Gallery, 1978 ** Condition: Mark well struck and clear. Three losses from scalloped rim to back of shell and one scallop is bent in the same area. One or two tiny dings to lid and lid hinge is a little loose on its pin. No other damage - in good condition overall.

(20.25 x 16.5cm.), gross weight 11.95 tr.oz. * Condition: Small dings to sides throughout, with several dings in a cluster to right end of lid front. Dent to lower front left corner. Interior lacks dividers.
