A 19th Century Indian Sadeli Mosaic Work Box: The box worked with a fine ivory, silver inlay, silver handles to the sides, on four paw feet, approx 32 x 23 x 10 cms. The interior has a fitted mirror, lidded compartments. (af)PROVENANCE:As per family:"This box, made about 1860 - 1870, belonged to Captain Henry Pierce, Master of the Clipper Pleiades, sister ship to the Cutty Sark. Captain Henry's family would accompany him on some of these voyages. During one particular voyage they were entertained by a very wealthy "Nabob" Captain Henry was doing business with. It was during this voyage that the Nabob admired one of the Captain Henry's daughters, who was under marriageable age.A marriage proposal was offered and swiftly denied, however Henry and his family were plied with extravagant gifts, this box being one of them. The gifts have remained with great-aunt-Florence Pierce, who was born on the ship and thus through the family by descent where they were bequeathed to my daughter Maggie.she is a resident of New Zealand and not able to take ownership of the box, hence it being offered for sale.
