Y A mid 19th century mother of pearl and micromosaic bonbonnière, the panel of a goldfinch perched on a branch against a white ground within a millefiori border, in the manner of the workshop of Giacomo Raffaelli, Rome, the box with silver double gilt mounts, French post 1838 poinçons including Double, 5.7cm (2 1/4in) diameter Giacomo Raffaelli (flourished 1753-1836) came from a family who worked for the Studio del Mosaico della Fabbrica della Basilica di S. Pietro in Rome. He is credited with many of the innovations in mosaici in piccolo, although it is probable some had been developed a little earlier. In 1775 Raffaelli held the first recorded exhibition of micromosaics at his private studio in the Piazza di Spagna. His subject matter was varied, from birds, flowers and animals, to views of the monuments of Rome, all of which were popular with Grand Tourists. See sale Dreweatts, London, Iconic Jewels and Treasures, 3rd December 2015, lot 119 for a similar plaque attributed to Raffaelli inset into a Saxon hardstone bonbonniere by Johan Christian Neuber. A micromosaic plaque attributed to Giacomo Raffaelli, showing a similar bird in reverse and perched on a fruiting branch, is in the Gilbert Collection, inv. no. 1996.623 (MM237).Condition Report: The goldfinch is in good order, no missing or damaged tesserae, the background has two knocked tesserae, but this appears to have been from manufacture, or not long after no missing tessrae. A fine hairline fracture to the mother of pearl under the lid but not to the top section of the lid, the base has a fine fracture seen to one side of the base, but not visible when looking inside. The lid closes well and tightly, the markings are readable and fairly clear, a bit rubbed. General wear commensurate with age.Condition Report Disclaimer

A French silver double gilt rounded rectangular snuff box, 1798-1809 petit garantie poinçon and Double, with engine turned panels within scroll foliate borders overall, inscribed Sarah Todd Astor 1818 to the lip, 8.4cm (3 1/4in) long, 119g (3.8oz)Condition Report: There is a split to the lip of the box lid, 8.4cm x5.1cm x 2cm, the hinge is working, further possible repair, inscribed Sarah Todd Astor 1818, slightly rubbed. There are punctures to the underside of the lid, but as the lid appears to be a double skin it doesn't go through to the top. Cartier, a cast silver 'samorodok'' rectangular table box by Jacques Cartier, London 1952, engraved Cartier London, with splashes of gold, the thumbpiece in the form of a claw-mounted cast of a Charles I crown, 14cm (5 1/2in) long, 294g (9.45Condition Report: Overall good condition with some wear commensurate with age and use. Lid closes well with no gaps or play. Hinges are good. Hallmarks are well struck and very readable. There is quite a lot of dirt around the inside cover lip. As the box is rough cast there are polishing areas on the base to make it stable, with some slight rubbing from use on the base. No major scuffs or scratches, no dents or bruises. There is one gold claw missing at the 12 o'clock position on the cast coin thumb piece, but is not really noticeable.Condition Report Disclaimer

A set of twelve early Victorian silver agate handled dessert knives and forks by George Adams for Chawner & Co., London 1844, with foliate ferrules and part reeded handles, engraved with a crest, the knives 21cm (8 1/4in) long, in a mahogany caseThe crest for MARSTONCondition Report: Marks are generally clear and readable, but some are rubbed. Engraving is crisp. The tines on the forks are all good. Very little wear to the knife blades. Some minor play to the handles on five pieces. One agate knife handle is cracked right through and is broken at the junction of the mount. Two agate fork handles and one knife handle have minor surface chips. Two fork handles have surface reaching inclusions resulting in natural cracks and pits. Alfred. Henry. P. W. Cushion from Lord Melchett with affection and appreciation of his loyal devoted service 1900 - 1945, 11.5cm (4 1/2in) high, with an associated leather travel case and card boxAlfred Moritz Mond (1868 - 1930) was a British industrialist, financier and Liberal Member of Parliament from 1906 - 1910, and was raised to the peerage in 1928 as Baron Melchett. His son Henry (1898-1949) was a director in the family businesses, as well as being a Liberal Member of Parilament in the early 1920s. In 1929, having moved to the Conservative Party, Henry became the Conservative Member of Parliament for Liverpool Toxteth East from 1929 - 1930, when he was elevated to the House of Lords becoming the 2nd Baron Melchett. This Cartier desk weather station was given as personal gift by Henry Mond, the 2nd Baron Melchett, to his long time personal assistant P.W Cushion after 45 years service. The weaather station is by direct family decent from P.W. Cushion to the current vendorCondition Report: Import marks are clearMovement - 15 jewels, European Watch Co., 3 adjustments. The movement has been badly repaired. Balance cock missing. Ratchet wheel and clickspring in poor condition. Recommend the movement is replaced. Edward VANSITTART (1769-1850), rector of Taplow Buckinghamshire. He was later Edward VANSITTART-NEALE, when he assumed the name NEALE by Royal Licence in 1805.This appears to have been differenced from the crest more widely associated with the VANSITTART (van Sittart) family of Holland. The crest here is only recorded at this time in the combined arms of the VANSITTART and NEALE as the second crest. Edward VANSITTART (1769-1850) was the second son of George VANSITTART (1743-1825), MP of Bisham Abbey Buckinghamshire, by Sarah STONEHOUSE daughter of Sir John STONEHOUSE (1716-1795) by Anne NEALE the eldest daughter of John NEALE (1687-1746), of Allesley Park Warwickshire MP for Coventry by Frances POPE of Oswestry. Edward married in 1809, after adopting the name VANSITTART-NEALE in 1805, Anne SPOONER (1780-1873) the daughter of Isaac SPOONER, businessman of Birmingham, by Barbara GOUGH.
