shaped oblong, the hinged cover decorated with two lions rampant among foliage and with a vase of flowers between, all on a matted ground, with foliage scroll and flower border, the base similarly decorated with two cornucopias among foliage and flowers78mm wide, 1oz 19dwt, 60.6grIt is unusual for Austrian gold or silver work from the 19th century to be lacking a town or standard mark, however, the style of the maker's mark is consistent with a number of monogram marks used in Vienna in the 18th and 19th centuries. Waltraud Neuwirth illustrates a number of these marks (W. Neuwirth, Wiener Gold und Silberschmiede Punzen 1781-1866, vol. I, Vienna, 1996, pp.143-148). The most likely candidate for the JS monogram on the present box is Jakob Schütz, though his recorded mark is in a differing shaped shield (op cit., p. 59, no. II-2-22). His mark was entered in 1779 and he seems to be active into the first decade of the 19th century.Marked inside base and inside cover with maker's mark twice. The marks are in general clear. There is some surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. There are some minor dings and bruises to the surface overall.
