An historically significant ‘Great Escape’ owned Georgian silver snuff box inscribed with ‘Thomas Green RAF Stalag Luft 3’, the box by Ed Smith, Birmingham 1834, with engine turned decoration and floral applied front, the gilt interior with inscription to underside of lid, 6.5cmW 67.9g Provenance: Squadron-Leader Thomas Kirby Green was shot by the Gestapo in 1944 after escaping from Stalag Luft III as part of the greatest escape attempt during the war. He was the part of the first twenty four to escape on the night of 24th March 1944, where he would pose as a Spanish labourer. He was recaptured near the Austrian border where he was interrogated under torture and eventually shot.

Ireland, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, who was reported missing during the retreat to Dunkirk, but subsequently rejoined 1939-45 Star; War Medal 1939-45, in named card box of issued addressed to ‘Mr. R. Ireland, 19 Hillsborough Road, Cowley, Oxford’; Army L.S. & G.C., G.VI.R., 1st issue, Regular Army (5377271 W.O. Cl. II. R. W. H. Ireland. Oxf. & Bucks. L.I.) number partially officially corrected; together with 12 Regimental and Army athletic and shooting prize medals, three of which are fully hallmarked sterling silver, two of which are named to him and 8 being regimental prize medals of the 43rd Light Infantry, generally very fine and better (15) £100-£140 --- Ronald William Hector Ireland was born in Lewisham, London, in 1904 and attested for the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. He served with the 2nd Battalion in India and Burma, and subsequently with the 1st Battalion as Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant with the British Expeditionary Force. He was reported missing in action in the retreat to Dunkirk on 27 May 1940, but subsequently rejoined his unit. He died at Honiton, Devon, in 1985. Sold with two photocopied images of the recipient taken from the Regimental Journal.
A Second War O.B.E. group of four awarded to Acting Squadron Officer Diana M. Barton, Women’s Auxiliary Air Force, who commanded the first barrage balloon to be entirely manned by airwomen The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, O.B.E. (Military) Officer’s 2nd type, lady’s shoulder badge, silver-gilt, on lady’s bow riband, in Royal Mint case of issue and outer card transmission box; Defence and War Medals 1939-45; Air Efficiency Award, G.VI.R., 1st issue (Act. Sqn. Off. D. M. Barton. W.A.A.F.); together with the related miniature awards, extremely fine (4) £240-£280 --- O.B.E. London Gazette 1 January 1945. Miss Diana Mary Barton was born in Reading, Berkshire, on 24 January 1912, and, prior to the outbreak of the Second Word War, joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service. Transferring to the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force following the outbreak of War, she was commissioned Assistant Section Officer on 3 December 1940, and underwent training as a Balloon Barrage Instructor. She was the first woman to command an all-women Barrage Balloon Unit during the War, based in Grosvenor Square, London- her neighbours at the time included both the American and Japanese Embassies, and recalls how the atmosphere in the Square was pretty tense at the time of Pearl Harbour. She also received various distinguished visitors to her unit, including General Eisenhower. Advanced Squadron Officer, for her pioneering work with the Balloon Unit she was created an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 1945 New Year’s Honours’ List, and was awarded the Air Efficiency Award in September 1947. Sold with copies of the Statutes of the Order of the British Empire and a copies of the Order of Service for the Services of Dedication, St. Paul’s Cathedral, 1960 and 1963, with accompanying tickets; copied research, including a photographic image of the recipient and an account written by her entitled ‘The Lighter Side of my War Effort 1938-47’; and other ephemera.
A cardboard boxed folio of Japanese prints published 1963 (folio), another tooled and gilded clothboard bound folio volume of colour prints in cloth board bound outer case, a cloth board bound volume of ink stones, a paper board bound volume "Portrait Paintings of the Ming and Qing Dynasties" (The Nanjing Museum Circa 1979), paper board bound with dust jacket and cardboard sleeve, a cardboard folio of monochrome prints, published 1963, a tooled and gilded cloth board bound volume of Chinese prints with dust jacket and cardboard sleeve and a printed cardboard folio of colour prints (7)Condition ReportOuter cardboard casing with rip to lower edge and further rips to corners, dust jacket with some discolouration though other wise sound, the book itself basically sound. Images ditto. Book two: plain outer cardboard case basically sound, thought clearly used, covers with some discolouration, interior pages basically sound. Book three: outer cardboard case with some marks, frontice piece dated 1963 with discolouration, pages to interior in sound condition. Book three with red and silver printed outer case: the plastic cover rippled but ok, outer cardboard case appears in good condition, interior pages look good. Book three with black on gold printed label: cardboard outer case with denting and damage conducive to age and use, inner cardboard cover similar, dust jacket and book itself in good condition. Book with grey cloth cover and pink and black label: outer cover, with sun bleaching otherwise ok, paper to interior of box with some ripping and discolouration. Main book with tooled and gilded cloth board: cover basically sound, interior images look ok. Last book with brown and white printed label and cloud decoration: with some discolouration to the outer case and some damage to the paper, images to interior look good.
A box of sundry decorative china and metal wares to include a Stuart Bass Exmoor Mallard decorated platter, a pewter teapot, plated salver, etc, together with two horn-handled ebonised walking canes with silver ferrules, a Tibetan spherical temple bell, canteen of cutlery and two exotic framed and glazed butterflies, etc, together with various pictures and prints to include a framed and glazed chromolithograph portrait of the jockey George Fordham, bearing "The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News May 24th 1884" (very discoloured and stained particularly to the top half)
