William Hutton & Sons (British), an Arts & Crafts silver box with hinged cover Mark of William Hutton & Sons Ltd, London 1901 The rectangular form embossed with a frieze of foliate motifs, the cover with strap hinges set with orange cabochons, with a clasp catch, on shaped feet, with wood lined interior 8 cm high, 22 cm long, 13.3 cm deep Condition report:Silver: there is light natural wear, some scratches and some rubbing to high points and silver surface. There is rubbing to the edges of the makers marks. Some tarnishing and polish deposits. The wooden interior of the box has some old marks and stains and from the underside the bare wood is exposed. The are some abrasions on the orange cabochons. There is no peg for the clasp.

A GEORGE III SAILOR’S SILVER TOBACCO BOX maker’s mark of William Key, London 1785, plain oval, the cover engraved with a frigate at sea, the base engraved with initials J.C within a wrigglework border, later additionally engraved with a figure of Hope with her anchor and name ‛Edward Canner‛ -- 4in. (10cm.) longFootnote: Generations of the Canner family have served in the Royal Navy including ‛Jack’ Canner, seaman, listed as a prisoner of war in France in 1779; James Canner (possibly the same) who entered Greenwich Hospital as a pensioner in 1796, and James Canner, ordinary seaman, who joined H.M.S. Ajax in 1809. Edward Canner, ordinary seaman, entered H.M.S. Alfred in 1842 whilst another Edward Canner (probably his son) joined H.M.S. Excellent as able seaman in 1862. After a career in the Royal Navy, another family member, John Canner, died in the sinking of Titanic in 1912.Condition report: Box in very good condition, cover engraving of ship worn.
