6th-10th century AD. A rectangular bronze seal box face panel with inlaid silver christogram, alpha and omega flanking; three holes to the underside. For a coin weight with similar design see Weber, K. Byzantinische Münzgewichte: Materialkorpus für 1-Nomisma-Gewichte, Schwelm, 2009, p.53. 8.97 grams, 20mm (3/4"). Property of a Surrey collector; acquired in the early 1970s. Fine condition. Rare.
18th century AD. A fabricated silver box, hexagonal in plan, with hinged lid and suspension loop; the sidewall with ivy leaves and tendrils, the lid with repoussé scene of a lady on a garden seat receiving a bouquet of flowers from a young man with his hat in his hand; maker's mark 'CR' crowned and other marks to the underside. 12 grams, 42mm (1 3/4"). Property of a gentleman; acquired in the 1970s. Fine condition.
19th century AD. A rectangular silver box with hinged lid and four tiered feet, punched design of a rosette within a double-lined border, stamped Arabic text to the centre. The box is believed to have been made by Jewish silversmiths in Baghdad, before they were expelled in the later 19th century. 438 grams, 15cm (6"). Mid-20th century AD. A silver box and lid with raised panel bearing the royal crown of Iraq and Syria above Persian notation 1978/6/10 and monogram; stamped to the underside '925 sterling' and rampant lion/'Deyhle/ Made in Germany. W' maker's mark, which appears to date to the 1950s. The box is believed to have been given as a royal gift by King Hussein of Jordan (1952-1999). 287 grams, 10cm (4"). A wood-lined rectangular silver box with tiered feet and hinged lid; top and sides with dense tracery of foliage and eight inset rubies; central motif of a wreath and heater shield with star-and-crescent above, plants in the quartered shield, Arabic text in the scroll beneath. The box is believed to have been given as a gift by Iskander Mirza, president of Pakistan (1899-1969). 1.1 kg, 20.5cm (8").
