Hector Archibald MacDonald - the Private Who Became a General:- A Collection of Related Items, including a Robinson & Leadbeater parian bust; a trinket box made from the hoof of his charger "Knowall", with a silver plated hinged cover enclosing the sole and engraved with an inscription; a Gordon Highlanders officer's brass crossbelt plate set onto an oak plaque with a brass plaque engraved "THIS BOX WAS MADE FROM THE COFFIN USED TO INTER THE REGIMENTAL COLOURS OF THE OLD 'NINETY TWA' IN 1881. IT WAS GIVEN TO ME IN 1950 BY HECTOR MacDONALD, SON OF THE GENERAL OF THE SAME NAME", together with a book Fighting Mac, The Downfall of Major-General Sir Hector MacDonald, which references the mock funeral; six various other related publications; a rare silk Stevengraph; a cabinet card; an unframed Vanity Fair print by Spy "A General Group"; postcards, a hand written letter from him dated May 13th (1901) and a quantity of research materialFootnote:- Hector MacDonald was born 4th March 1853, the son of a crofter, he left school before he was 15 and was apprenticed to a draper in Dingwall. He enlisted with the Gordon Highlanders as a Private at the age of 17 and rose through the ranks on his own merit and professionalism to become a Major-General. He distinguished himself during the Second Afghan War and was offered the choice of the Victoria Cross or a commission. He chose the latter, but never quite fitted in with his fellow officers. He was posted to Ceylon as Commander-in-Chief of British forces, but committed suicide in 1903 following accusations of homosexual activity with local boys. This was almost certainly an invention prompted by jealous and cruel suggestion! His suicide caused great public shock, as did the discovery that he had secretly married in 1884 and had fathered a son. He was buried in "secret" at Dean Cemetery, Edinburgh, but 30,000 people turned up to pay their last respects.

An Omani Jambiya, the 18.5cm curved steel blade with raised medial ridge, the silver covered grip and scabbard decorated with panels of flattened silver studs and bands of beadwork, 32cm; a Small Collection of Omani Silver Artefacts, including a fancy link chain necklace with Koran box pendant, two rings, a tassel pendant, a bracelet, a khol box and wand, a miniature coffee pot and a miniature nef on wood stand, together with a copper condiment/spice box containing smaller boxes and vessels, an embroidered silk skull cap and a brass Dallah coffee pot with engraved decoration.The jambiya has rust pitting to the blade. The back of the scabbard has three panels of the silver covering missing. The Koran box pendant has small dents to the side where the cover sits. The other pieces in this lot are undamaged.

They were first cousins who married in London in 1740. Richard ASTELL was the son of William ASTELL (1672-1741), a London timber merchant by Mary BAGNALL (1686-1753). Sarah BAGNALL was the daughter of John BAGNALL (1678-1742) gentleman of London by Hannah KENNET (1737-1807) formerly of Bradford Yorkshire. The blazon: gules, a lion passant per pale or and argent between four crosses crosslet of the last (Astell) - impaling - ermine, two bars or, overall a lion rampant azure (Bagnall) crest: a cross crosslet or, entwined with a serpent vert (Astell) Condition Report: Caddy - Maker's mark to obscured, rest are clear. A vintage Omega "Constellation" automatic chronometer, early 1960's, with date aperture, round silvered coloured pie pan dial with shimmer, applied gold baton markers, sword hands with black inserts, centre seconds, crown with Omega logo, case back with observatory logo, the case heavy gold plated and with Omega gold plated strap with logo to clasp. Diameter 36 mm. NOTE: The watch comes with a silver plated Omega watch box (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The original dial is in generally good order with only minor surface blemishes. The watch glass has some scratches and there are two small cracks. The movement winds and appears to be ticking away as it should. The pointers adjust correctly. The case is in generally good order with only very minor blemishes. The bracelet has some wear but is serviceable.
A cased set of silver coffee bean spoons, Birmingham 1932, maker Arthur Price & Co Ltd, together with a silver Vesta case, Birmingham mark 1891, maker William Neal and a silver and enamel stamp box, Birmingham 1903, maker Crisford & Norris Ltd. CONDITION REPORT: The length of each spoon is 98 mm. The spoons are all in good condition and free from any damage, repairs or restoration. The hallmarks are all clear and the bowls are not misshapen. The interior of the case is in generally very good condition with only slight staining to the satin lid lining. The exterior of the case is generally very good. There are some minor nibbles and scuffs around the edges of the case and small areas of the leather that are rubbed but no major issues. Both clasps shut as they should.
Of equestrian interest - A collection of silver and silver plated items from the estate of the late Julie Cecil, a circular photograph frame with horseshoe embellishment marked Hermes Paris, aperture 9cm diameter, hardstone ashtrays with horseshoe embellishments, a presentation waiter, novelty cruet set, trophy and cover on a hardstone stand, table cigarette case etc.Provenance: From the estate of the late Julie Cecil (1942-2022)The silver cigarette box is a little dented and scuffed, the salver is also scratched with some rubbing to the plate. The ashtrays, the hoof and the frame are all in generally good condition. The Coronation cup is in generally good order, the other trophy is rather dented, bruised and off-centre. THe plating to the cruet is rather rubbed in places and one hinged cover does not sit true.
