* Keppel (Sir Henry, 1809-1904). A fine silver cigar box presented by the later King Edward VII and George V to Admiral of the Fleet Sir Henry Keppel, G.C.B., O.M. Royal Navy, the silver box with rubbed hallmarks but Birmingham 1898, lid with a gilt roundel of Edward VII facing left (designed by Emil Fuchs), the front panel engraved with family crest, gilded interior, the inner lid engraved 'To Admiral of the Fleet. The Hon Sir Henry Keppel, G.C.B. on the occasion of his 91st birthday, from Albert Edward and George, Ascot June 14th 1900.', 7.5cm high x 17cm wide x 9cm deep, 17.7oz, with key (Qty: 1)NOTESAdmiral of the Fleet Sir Henry Keppel, G.C.B., O.M., was a Royal Navy officer. His first command was off the coast of Spain which was then in the midst of the First Carlist War. He served as commanding officer of the corvette HMS Dido on the East Indies and China Station and was deployed in operations during the First Opium War and operations against Borneo pirates. He later served as commander of the naval brigade besieging Sebastopol during the Crimean War. He took part in the capture of Canton during the Second China War. Keppel went on to be Commander-in-Chief at Cape of Good Hope and West Coast of Africa station, then Commander-in-Cheif, South East Coast of America station also China station and finally in Plymouth.

Small archive relating to a British naval officer's internment at Sham Shui Po POW camp, Hong Kong, c.1942-5, comprising: 1) 22 pencil or pen-and-ink sketches of camp scenes, including emaciated prisoners and caricatured Japanese guards, rectos only on 22 leaves of lined paper, wire-stitched with 3 further leaves of manuscript notes, small damp-stain to corners of outer leaves, 20 x 16 cm; 2) booklet of manuscript poetry, literary quotations and other aide-memoires, including a list of titles headed 'I remember books - keep mind sane', and apparently original poetry attributed to other inmates, 10 leaves each with printed Chinese caption within box recto, browned, creased from folding, 20.5 x 14 cm; 3) large manuscript folding map of Hong Kong, pencil with red and blue grease pen depicting troop movements and water bodies, linen-backed, a few holes to intersections of folds, opening to approx. 80 x 100 cm; 4) silver gelatin portrait print of naval officers, annotated verso '1951, Commissioned Masters-at-Arms Course. Royal Naval Regulating School, "H.M.S. Excellent"' with sitters identified, 19.5 x 22 cm; 5) a group of 4 near-contemporary photostats of Japanese propaganda, and 2 wire-stitched photostat booklets of typescript poetry apparently composed by prisoners of war during or after internment (Qty: qty)NOTESProvenance: Guildford Ronald Edwards RN (1921-1994), sometime provost marshall and lieutenant-commander; thence by descent. According the family Edwards would have compiled these sketches and notes while under psychiatric observation after the end of the war.
