An interesting Victorian gold and silver brooch in the form of "The Coburg Eagle". The front with graduated turquoise stones set in silver (some small stones missing to edge of one wing, the eye originally set with a small ruby, now also missing). The beak set with small rose cut diamonds. The eagle clutches a pearl in each claw. The backing gold with pin clip and safety chain. 3.7cm x 4.6cm x 1.8cm (to the extremes). Information: The brooch bears a striking resemblance to 12 that were given as gifts to the train bearers of the wedding of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert on 10th February 1840. All the train bearers were unmarried daughters of nobility. The brooches were designed by Prince Albert and ordered of R & S Garrard. They were made by Charles Du Vé, a London jeweller. After the wedding ceremony, each train bearer was gifted one of the brooches in a blue velvet box. For comparison, examples of the brooch can be seen at Kensington Palace, The British Museum and Hatfield House, Herts. Note: Keys are not stating that the brooch is one of the 12 as described above, however, the current owner is the great great great grand-daughter of Sir Henry Tate, the present example may have passed through the family by descent to the current owner from this source. Condition Report:Ruby eye missing. Small diamond missing from beak. Lead solder pin fitting. Part of the setting missing from top right wing. No original case. Pin hole to verso please see images.
