A French dragoon’s brass helmet c 1830, tall brass skull with front and back peaks, leather backed wire loop chinchain with rayed ear roundels, “frosted” ear to ear plate and back band, the front embossed with a large grenade in wreath, tall comb with Medusa head finial and palm wreath in front, and inverted tear drop embossed side panels, red (faded) “shaving brush” plume in holder, black hair crest and tail plume, white feather side plume, leather and cloth liner (replaced). An ancient Etruscan or early Roman bronze figure of a naked warrior wearing a helmet and carrying a shield in his left hand. Probably 4th-2nd century BC. Of fine style with the elongated limbs and heavy midriff typical of the period. Excellent patination with natural encrustations from burial. Provenance: branch of the ancient Italian family of Pignatelli. (Antonio Pignatelli was pope between 1691 and 1700 and was responsible for numerous building and excavation in and around Rome including the construction of a road near the Appian Way). 5 1/4'' high excluding base
A mixed lot to include a brass helmet coal scuttle, bellows, collapsible opera hat, Black Forest book slide carved with edelweiss, oak stationary letter rack, a pair of turned hardwood candlesticks, Art Deco oak cased mantel clocks, two Roku dial telephones, a medicine glass (cased), a ceiling light with glass drops etc.

A mixed group of bronze items comprising: a crossbow brooch with three onion-shaped terminals, hinged pin, catchplate to the rear of the footplate; a hollow-cast omega-shaped handle, possibly a helmet carrying handle; a round-section penannular bracelet with opposed ram's head finials. 80 grams total, 53-78mm (2 - 3"). Property of an Essex collector; acquired 1970s. [No Reserve]
*Pith Helmet. WWII tropical helmet belonging to Lieutenant-Colonel J.W.A. Stares, of typical khaki colour with red and white striped decal, the lining inscribed J.W.A. Stares, in original regimental inscribed 'J.W.A. Stares, The "Loyal" Regiment" Lieutenant John William Alfred Stares was born in 1910, commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Loyal Regiment 1931, advanced Captain 1939, Major 1940, Lieutenant-Colonel 1942 to 1945, served in Palestine 1936-39, mentioned in despatches 1937, awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) 1945 and OBE. Lynch, US Naval Aviator and highly decorated veteran of WWII and the Korean War, Comprising Navy Cross; Navy Distinguished Service Medal; Legion of Merit, reverse engraved 'John Lynch'; Distinguished Flying Cross, reverse engraved 'J.J. Lynch U.S.N.'; Air Medal reverse, engraved 'J.J. Lynch U.S.N.'; Army Commendation Medal; Army Defence Medal, with 'Fleet' bar; American Campaign Medal; Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal ; WWII Victory Medal; Occupation Service Medal with 'Europe' bar; National Defence Medal; Korean Service Medal; United Nations for Korea Medal; Liberation of the Philippines Medal ; Vietnam Service Medal, presented in a modern display case with gilt metal badges, cloth badge and button, together with an extensive amount of original documentation and copied research in two ring binder files, an U.S. Navy uniform, comprising, hat, tunic with medal riband bars and trousers, a private purchase brown leather flying jacket and helmet, various card medal boxes, reel to reel film, plus a colour print Provenance: From the Christopher John collection. Admiral Lynch (1911-1988) was born in Boston, educated at Boston College receiving a law degree. He joined the Royal Navy in 1935 and became a bomber pilot. During WWII he served in the Pacific with 8th Bomber Squadron as a pilot of dive bombers and torpedo planes. He received the Navy Cross when as a pilot of a SBD Dauntless dive bomber in Bombing Squadron Eight of USS Hornet he scored a direct hit on the Japanese cruiser Mikuma during the Battle of Medway on 6 June 1942. He was awarded the DFC for sinking an enemy submarine during combat in the Solomon Islands on 6 September 1942, he also received the Air Medal and Gold Star in lieu of a second Air Medal, the first for leading a fight of scout bombers of the USS Hornet in action against Japanese forces and scoring a direct hit on enemy cruiser Chikuma near Santa Cruz Island on 26 October 1942, and the second for meritorious achievement as leader of a division and pilot of scout-bombers during a raid on Japanese forces in the Guadalcanal and Rekata Bay area in the face of heavy anti-aircraft fire destroying twelve enemy float seaplanes and shore installations including gasoline dumps. He also received the Legion of Merit as Operations Officer on the Staff of a Carrier Task Group. Post War service saw Lynch attending the Naval War College, transferring to Washington in 1947 and assigned to the Pentagon, during the Korean War he served as Executive Officer and Operations Officer of the USS Lake Champlain and later was the Naval attache at the US embassy in Moscow. Lynch commanded the aircraft carrier Coral Sea in 1960 and had various other land and sea duties in the 1960s. He was chief of staff of the US strike command at McDill Air Force Base in Florida where he was awarded the second Legion of Merit and Distinguished Service Medal, he retired from service in 1970. Watermark to cap, chin strap broken, foil lined, makers mark to interior illegible. Much of the cloth head-dress is moth-holed. One of the belts has cross strap. See additional images.
Pearse & Co., Army Clothiers of London helmet with Haddingtonshire Rifle Volunteer Corps badge, with metal helmet case. CONDITION REPORT: Helmet has it's spike. No obvious moth damage. Helmet plate appears original. The general condition is very good. It would appear to have spent most of it's life in the accompanying tin.
