An officer's lance cap of the 17th Lancers, possibly of the 1828 pattern showing a red waistband as introduced by William IV (previously blue) and as indicated in the 1831 dress regulations, the helmet plate would have originally been the type with a broad base band and displaying Hanovarian arms, it appears this Officer's service crossed over to Queen Victoria which required a new plate without the Hanoverian arms and the new VR boss on blue, in 1840 the waisted band reverted to blue which correctly places the modification to circa 1840, some restoration QTY: (1)NOTE:Provenance: Formerly from the Warwick Cary Collection, Australia.

Soldier 51st Highland Division 1926, bronze, modelled a WWI soldier in service uniform holding a rifle with helmet and field kit on the naturalistic base, signed and dated 1926, 39 cm highQTY: (1)NOTE:Provenance: David Cohen Fine Art.George Henry Paulin (1888-1962) was a Scottish sculptor commonly known as Harry, he was born in Clackmannanshire, Scotland in 1888 and educated at Dollar Academy from 1900-1905. He displayed great artistic talent and attracted the attention of his neighbour who was the artist Sholto Johnstone Douglas. Douglas encouraged the family to send Harry to Edinburgh College of Art which attended. Harry travelled extensively and visited Paris and Rome and later attended the L'Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris for a year.At the outbreak of WWI Harry returned to Scotland from Italy and enlisted in the Lothians and Border Horse as a Trooper. In November 1914 he was trampled by a horse and invalided out of the army in December. He re-enlisted with the Royal Flying Corps as an Observer. In 1918 he transferred to the Royal Naval Air Service as Lieutenant and later that year in the Royal Air Force as a role of intelligence.Post-war Harry was commissioned for many war memorials including the Kirkcudbright war memorial and the 51st (Highland) Division which is erected in Newfoundland's Field of Remembrance at Beaumont-Hamel, Somme, France.The memorial which is a huge sculpture identical to the smaller bronze offered for sale commemorates the soldiers of the 51st Division killed during WWI. It is located near Y Ravine, Beaumont-Hamel which was the position of the Division's first major victory on 13 November 1916 during the Battle of Ancre in the closing stages of the Battle of the Somme.

An Indo Persian Khula-Khud type helmet and bazuband type arm guard. The helmet of spherical domed form with a projecting four sided pinnacle, the body of the helmet allover engraved with foliage and script with twin plume mounts, with traces of original gilt highlights, retaining partial chain mail fringe, 27cm high, 18cm wide. A fine replica of a 1796 Pattern Tarleton helmet of the Wiltshire Yeomanry, with black leather shell and peak, 'silver' Prince of Wales feathers to either side and band above the peak 'Yeomanry Cavalry', pleated red velvet band wound in 'silver' chain, short bullion fringe to the rear and elaborate 'bear skin, cresting. An unusual Saxon Ulan helmet in thick grey felt body, large brass and nickel helmet plate with crest within a wreath and crown border mounted on a many pointed star, with a brown leather chin strap with painted Reichs cockade to one side and large green and white felt cockade mounted to the flat-top. Internally with a worn brown leather liner, the remains of the issue stamp visible to the peak. 18cm tall, 23cm front to back. *CR: Slight moth marks, slight differences in colour across the felt and slightly out of shape ... but a fine example/. *BP 22.5% (18.75% plus VAT) plus a lot fee of £8 inc. With an 83cm tapering pointed blade with single short fuller, the blade lightly engraved with GR monogram beneath a Crown, Royal Coat of Arms (1801-1816 period), tarlton pattern helmet and other military trophies, named for 'Gibson's Thompson and Craig Warranted'. With a gilt hilt with shell guard, cross bar and silver wound wire effect grip, and light 'D' shaped bow. 102cm overall length. A rare* 17th century English plug bayonet, flamboyant blade 11.5 in., engraved at the base with 'GOD SAVE KING JAMES THE 2' to one side and with an arched crown to the other, struck on each side with an armourer's mark of a king's head, and with the inlaid copper dagger mark of the Cutlers' Company of London on one side; brass mounted hilt of 'Helmet-Head' type with polished ebony grip and helmeted head finials to the pommel and each quillon, some restoration to the hilt; in a scabbard of embossed leather with brass straps along each edge united by two straps across each face, lacking chape; offered together with: R.D.C. Evans. 'The Plug Bayonet / An Identification Guide for Collectors', 2002, hard cover, with M/S dedication from the author. The A.F.C. group of nine medals to George Reginald Ashton, Royal Naval Air Service and Royal Air Force: Air Force Cross, George VI, first type, reverse impressed '1939' in small figures to the lower limb*, in case of issue, extremely fine, toned; 1914-15 Star (228216, G. R. ASHTON. C.P.O. 3, R.N.A.S.); British War Medal 1914-20 ad Victory Medal with MID emblem (FLT. S. LT. G. R. ASHTON. R.N.A.S.); Coronation Medal 1937, unnamed as issued; the last four court mounted, near very fine; 1939-45 Star, Atlantic Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-45 with MID emblem, all unnamed as issued and swing mounted, very fine. [9]; together with this officer's flying log books (5), his dress miniature medals, his certificate of commission as a Flight Sub Lieutenant R.N., his MID certificate for 24th September 1941, a leather flying helmet with Gosport tubes and goggles, and various other items of associated ephemera. George Ashton was born to Laura Ashton 14/04/1888 in Ryde in the parish of St Helens on the Isle of Wight, and he resided at the Coast Guard Station, East Cowes. He volunteered for service in the Royal Navy in 1903, serving as a Boy in various establishments before rating as Ordinary Seaman 14/04/1906 - his 18th birthday. He progressed to Leading Seaman by the autumn of 1911, and in April 1913 he gained an Aviator's Certificate from the Royal Aero Club of the U.K. (included in this lot). He was commissioned Probationary Flight Officer R.N.A.S. 28/10/1917. His A.F.C. was gazetted in the New Year Honour for 1939. He began the Second World War as Squadron Leader in command of the communication Squadron with the B.E.F. in France (designated 81 Squadron in December 1939), and the in command of 98 Squadron at Nantes before evacuating to the UK in June 1940 as a Wing Commander flying a Fairey Battle. 98 Squadron was attached to Coastal Command and relocated to Kaldadarnes in Iceland for coastal patrol and anti-submarine duties. While in Iceland Ashton, now a Group Commander, flew Tiger Moth T. 5878 as personal transport. He returned to the U.K. in 1941 and went on to command at R.A.F. Station Doncaster, and 5 Maintenance Unit at Kemble. * See Abbot and Tamplin, 'British Gallantry Awards', p. 8, for this variation.
