James William Main was awarded the DSC for his skilful navigation to clear a path through a minefield off Ouistreham, Sword Beach, Normandy, see page 5455 Supplement to London Gazette 24th November 1944. Two Midshipman's Journals covering his early naval career, and other items are held in the Imperial War Museum archives
