Native tribal interest - a west African carved wooden helmet mask probably Kuba (Democratic Republic of Congo), with typical bulging forehead and broad nose, the pronounced chin with a band of toothed carving, 'handle' style knop to top of helmet, fringed beard to lower edge, small ears, 11in. (28cm.) high. Condition: Several long vertical shrinkage splits to wood. 5in. section of fringed beard missing from right side, and large (1in. ) chip to lower edge of mask at forward end of that missing section. Small (old) chip to lower right eyelid. Some small holes and knot marks to wood (part of the original wood itself). Some rubbing to surface of wood in places and a few scratches above right eye.

A 16th century Spanish Morian or Cabasset, the one-piece almond shape with crown and shiled punch mark 20cm (8in) A Cabasset helmet was a type of open helmet used from the mid 16th century to early 17th century. The almond shaped skull was forged in one piece and tapered to a stalk. The lower edge was shaped into a narrow brim and turned out. Linen was attached by means of iron rivets. It was worn by infantry in pike and shot formations. The helmet was popular during the Civil War in England and known as a Pikeman's Pot.
