WWII GERMAN WINTER CAMPAIGN AT EASTERN FRONT MEDAL, 1941-42 along with a small group of other Herma and Third Reich items including 16th Strinberggest Hildburghausen badge, two very worn medals, novetly Prussian helmet desk weight, plastic disc with swastika, group of other swastika decorated items, a reproduction Third Reich car pennant and a book - Der Sieg in Polen
UNIDENTIFIED CAVALRY HELMET, LATE 19TH / EARLY 20TH CENTURY possibly Yeomanry, the brass lobster tail skull with red horse hair plume, the helmet plate formed with central rose bordered by three imperial crowns (these not British, and not dissimilar from an Austrian crown), further mounted with embossed laurel borders, twin-rose ear bosses affixing a chain chinstrap, with remnant leather to interior peakPossibly composite.
A Victorian Duke of Lancaster's Yeomanry (Albert) pattern helmet, with brass applied shield, with a matching set of medals awarded to Private J Clarkson Duke of Lancaster's Yeomanry Regiment 4293, 1914-1918 War Medal, Victory medal, Territorial Medal 400194 and a 1939-45 War Medal, also a black and white photograph of the helmet accompanies this lot.
A 17th century and later carved oak wainscot type chair, with carved back inscribed date 1612 with side profile of a soldier with helmet and floral detail, with later seat and block legs.Condition Report: The back panel is period, the chair with later parts. Each leg has been blocked and cut down, joints slightly wobbly, losses and old repairs (see images).
A WW1 era enlisted man’s Pickelhaube, fitted with the Prussian badge to the front. Usual leather skull, neck guard, and peak, the latter with metal edging. Painted national cockade to one side, but the left hand one missing. Removable ball finial to the crown, plus the usual vented comb to the rear section. Complete with 9 tongue leather liner, and leather cord drawstring. Unusually, the Prussian badge is held in place on the inside by a small strip of leather, which is almost certainly a later repair. No apparent dates or manufacturer marks. The helmet has a short leather chinstrap, which would appear to be of the same era as the helmet. Condition: fair. The helmet overall retains a good shape, but the surface has ‘jellified’ to one side, where the lacquer has degraded, leaving a rough texture. The badge and ball finial have darkened with age and use, and the one remaining cockade has a little paint loss. There are stitching faults to the neck guard, and there is some movement and separation in this area. The leather liner is a little dry in places, but seems to be complete. The inner edge of the metal edging on the peak is a little clipped and corroded in places.
A WW2 made, German M40 helmet, reused by Norwegian forces in the post war era. Of usual form, with the rim rolled under, and the vent holes pressed into the crown. Maker marked to the left skirt ‘NS64’ for Vereinigte Deutsche Nikelwerke, Schwerte. Lot number of ‘E48’ stamped to the back skirt. Applied Norwegian decals to both sides, and seemingly no trace of German decals visible. There is a little play in 3 external rivets that hold the liner band in place, but the seem to be secure (possible replacements?). Complete with a 10 tongue pigskin liner, and a leather chin strap. Notes: large quantities of German helmets were left behind in Norway after the surrender of German forces in 1945. The helmets were subsequently repainted and reused by the Norwegian forces. Condition: generally very good. The helmet is structurally sound, with no dents or splits. Normal paint wear from service and age, to the rim and crown area. The Norwegian decals show some wear and losses, with one being applied slightly ‘askew’. The leather liner and strap appear to be in good order, but the drawstring has split.
An early 20th century dark blue cloth, Home Service Pattern officers helmet, fitted with a fine and scarce gilt, enamel and silvered helmet plate for the Notts & Derby Regiment (Sherwood Foresters). Once the property of Captain Edward Nathaniel Drury-Lowe (1888-1948). Accompanying the helmet is a period photograph of 2nd Lt Drury-Lowe (as was his rank at the time), and he can be seen holding the very helmet offered in this lot. It’s known from contemporary records that 2nd Lt Drury-Lowe attested in March 1908, and it seems likely that this photograph and helmet would date from this era. The helmet plate is of a pattern used from circa 1902-1914. The helmet is complete with its rosette hooks to each side, onto which is fitted the chain chin strap. The quatrefoil mount is present to the crown, but it is missing its spike. The aforementioned mount is held in place by 4 of the correct type of screw on washers. The interior retains its leather sweatband and cloth lining, but the latter has come away from the leather band. A label to the inside gives the makers marks as ‘A&NCSL London’, for the Army & Navy Co-operative Society Ltd. Notes: Drury-Lowe had attained the rank of Captain by 1914, and earned the 1914 with Mons Clasp (see separate lot). He spent the majority of the war as a prisoner of war in a German camp. Condition: the helmet would appear to be structurally sound, but it is a little ‘out of round’. It displays well on a shaped head, but when removed it shrinks back somewhat and has a narrowed look (see image 14). The helmet plate is good, with just normal dulling to the gilt parts, and some tarnishing to the silvered areas. The enamel backing is also in good order. The velvet backed chin strap is complete, although any former gilt finish has gone, leaving the now brown tarnished brass base metal. The cloth external covering is good, and is free from any moth damage or tears. The brass comb to the back section stands proud of the helmet, and there is a slight kink to the metal. The lift is also likely due to some age related shrinkage. There is also a brass stud missing to this brass comb at the neck guard area. As noted above, part of the cloth lining has come away from the leather sweat band. There is some cracking to the lining on the neck guard area, but this does not affect the structural integrity of the helmet. There is a small crack to the brass edging near to where the peak comes to a point.
A selection of WW2 German insignia and medals. To include: an Iron Cross second class, marked ‘49’ to the suspension ring for Josef Feix Söhne (complete with ribbon), 2 x War Merit Cross with swords (one marked 11 to ring, for Grossmann & Co, Wein), a German Army ‘Heer’ sports vest insignia, a pair of Pith Helmet badges (4 prongs to eagle badge, 2 broken away, 3 prongs to national colours), these are likely old post war pieces. 6 items. Condition: generally good, but some service and age related wear to the medals.
A WW2 era, German M42 model helmet, possibly for the Luftwaffe. Marked with 2 code stamps; 0717 for the heating lot number (to the back skirt) and NS64 (to the left skirt), which represents the manufacturer Vereinigte Deutsche Nikelwerke factory in Schwerte, North Rhine-Westphalia. Of standard form, with the ‘raw edge’ on the shell, seen from 1942 through till the end of WW2. This would be an early production helmet, as from early 1943 both the lot number and manufacturer number were stamped to the back skirt. No decal applied to the left side, but there is perhaps some slight evidence of there once having been a luftwaffe eagle - you can observe an outline to the metal that matches the shaped of the standard luftwaffe decal. Part pigskin liner still present, attached to the zinc liner band. An ink stamp to the inside of the liner appears to read ‘B 57’. The original wearers name is also handwritten to the lining, but this is difficult to discern. A further oval ink stamp is marked to the inside of the dome of the helmet. Condition: the helmet shell is generally sound, with no dents or cracks. Some very light surface corrosion in a few places, to both the inside and outside. As per the above description and images, the liner is only partially present, with the front portion seemingly having been cut neatly away at some point in the past. The helmet is also minus its chinstrap.
A WW2 era, German M38 Luftschutz ‘gladiator’ helmet. With a dark blue / black paint finish on a multi part construction shell. Usual Luftschutz decal to the front, which is at least 95% intact, and 2 ‘pepperpot’ ventilation holes to each side. Standard information decal applied to the inside of the back skirt, which informs the wearer that the maximum price that can be charged for the helmet is 8 Reich Marks, and that it is a size 56. The inside of the helmet is fitted with an 8 tongue pigskin liner, and part of the original drawstring cord. Cork spacers separate the liner from the surface of the helmet. There is a makers code stamped into the back skirt, but curiously, the decal has been overlaid almost completely over it, making it difficult to read. It’s believed to read ‘RL 2/39/? A hand inked mark of “E.Sch’ is also on the leather liner. Correct leather chinstrap present. Condition: generally good. Much of the original painted finish still present, with the usual paint chipping to the folded over rim, and a little more the crown area. Some losses to the tongue on the pigskin liner, plus some age / service related cracking to chin strap.
An interesting, and likely quite scarce, WW2 German propaganda photograph album, taken in occupied Belgium in circa 1942, by the well known German photographer, Otto Kropf (1901-1970). The unfilled album would have been commercially produced, with a three dimensional German Wehrmacht helmet applied to the front, and the words ‘Aus meiner Dienstzeit (from my time of service). The inside cover has the handwritten title and name, ‘Bildberichter P.K.Kropf’, which translates as Photo Reporter, and the name of the photographer being Kropf, commonly known as Otto Kropf. Another handwritten page at the front of the book reads; ‘Propaganda Abteilung Belgien’ which translates as ‘Propaganda Department Belgien’. Notes: Otto Kropf was a German photographer that enlisted in the Wehrmacht, and on account of his photography skills, was fast tracked to the ‘Propagandakompanie’ in Brussels, Belgium. Kropf took thousands of photographs while serving as a war correspondent while he was stationed in Belgium, from 1940-1943. The photographs in the album have a more informal look than the usual stage managed pictures, showing regular soldiers and officers carrying out activities such as weapon inspections, parades, children’s Christmas concerts and festive meals, Wehrmacht office workers, and soldiers almost acting as tourists and enjoying the sites in Belgium. One page has handwritten details, with the date 3.7.42 , and the regimental details of the 3rd Company Infantry Battalion 347, and the soldier name of ‘Carl Büscher’. The album contains 16 pages of stuck in images, with a total of 56 photographs. Condition: generally very good. The cover and internal pages are in good order, with just a little wear to the interleave pages (each with the usual ‘spider web’ pattern). One of the pages has a space for a photograph, but the image is absent. The remaining photographs appear to be in good condition, and well stuck in place.
A WW2 era Japanese type 90 battle damaged steel helmet. A semi relic piece, with just the shell remaining, and missing it’s applied star motif to the front. The helmet has a clean bullet entry point to the left side, and a larger exit point to the upper right side, clearly almost certainly a fatal wound for its wearer - a very grizzly reminder of the cost of war. 3 retaining loops still a fixed to the inside, and 4 small vent holes to the crown. Small letter S in a diamond lozenge stamped into the back skirt, indicatig that it was manufactured by Seiko of Kobe. Condition: loss of painted finish and some surface corrosion to both the outside and inside. Other than the obvious bullet damage, there are no other holes or splits to the metal.
A WW2 era British Wolseley Pattern pith helmet, dated 1942 and broad arrow marked to the leather headband. Manufactured by Failsworth Hats Ltd, and sized at 7 1/4. Complete with folded cloth puggaree around the circumference. No evidence of a regimental flash or badge being fitted. The hooks for the chin strap are present, but the strap itself are absent. Condition: generally good. Some service wear to the cloth covering, and a very small hole just above the puggaree on the front. A little dusty in places, and some very slightly darker areas to the khaki cloth, but on the whole a clean example.
A WW2 era M35 German helmet shell in relic condition. Usual rolled over edge and separately applied ventilation holes. The helmet has the remains of black and green camouflage paint to the surface. Notes: a old dealer label attached to the helmet states that the item was found in a cellar in Dortmand, Germany. Condition: relic, likely from many years of poor storage. The helmet is heavily pitted inside and out, with no visible makers codes or other types of marks readable. Nothing remains of the liner, strap or attachments.
A scarce 19th century Korean Joseon dynasty helmet. Lacquered leather skull, with applied gilt copper dragons, and floriated strap work. Gilt copper peak with pierced through dragon motifs. Fabric lining to the interior. A similar example resides in the Brooklyn Museum, ascension number X957.3a-b. Approximately 25cm height. Condition: requiring restoration. The lacquered leather skull piece retains a good shape, and is free from cracking, dents, or holes. The strap work decoration is loose to 2 sections, and 2 have broken away, but these are still present as loose pieces. The gilt peak has some has some cracks to the pierced design. The top gilt copper section to the crown is also loose and can be lifted off. The internal fabric lining remains mostly intact, albeit a little dusty. Certainly a worthy restoration project.
A WW2 era, German M35 Luftschutz helmet with beaded rim. Painted with blue / black finish, with standard Luftschutz decal to the front. Marked ET62 to the left skirt, and W4020 to the back skirt. Fitted with a 9 tongue leather liner and cord drawstring, with the liner being marked ‘RLM’ and 54. Complete with black leather chinstrap. Condition: normal light service wear to the crown. Decal around 80% complete, with just some light scuffing in places. The liner is good, with normal service wear, and what appears to be a couple of oily finger marks to the front section, possibly from where it’s been picked up with dirty hands.
An unusual WW2 era Bulgarian M36 c type combat helmet, which appears to have been re-painted and re-badged for German personnel use. Of standard form, with the shape being based upon the German M16 pattern helmet, and having a raw edge. 8 tongue liner fitted to the interior, plus a leather chin strap. The exterior finish is somewhat textured, partly from the repaint, and from surface corrosion. The repaint colour is now a grey-black colour, but evidence of the original olive green paint is evident to the inside under the liner. There is a metal swastika motif applied to one side, which under close inspection, appears to have been soldered in place, and then painted over. The helmet has possibly been repurposed for home front or last ditch German defence use in the Volkssturm. No apparent stamped marks, but there is a fainted inked name to the leather liner, which appears to be Kazolo or Kazobo or similar. Condition: generally solid, with service wear and light corrosion. Some denting and paint loss to the crown, plus wear to the paint around the applied swastika. The inner liner shows much wear, and the leather is quite dry. Some old surface rust to the inside of the crown, but no holes or serious corrosion. The helmet appears to be missing its internal brackets for holding the liner securely in place.
A nice quality, late Victorian era studio portrait of a military bandsman. The photograph as been hand coloured / painted, to highlight his red tunic, ‘swallow nests’ to his shoulders, and the green facings to his tunic. He is pictured wearing the standard Home Service pattern helmet with spike. The detail of his helmet plate is unclear, but it could possibly be the Army Ordnance Department. Over his shoulder is strung a bugle, and he holds a pair of drumsticks, with a drum positioned to his left hand side. The photograph is housed in a gilt frame, with a fabric mount surrounding the photo. Approximately 35.9cm x 31.4cm frame size, image size 13.3cm x 9.5cm. Condition: generally good. The photo is clear, but there is some foxing. The painted details are quite vivid, but when looked at under magnification there is some crazing to the painted surface. The frame is solid, with just a tiny chip to the gilt surface on the left hand side.
