λ Two 18th century ivory fans, an early 18th century ivory fan with ivory monture, the head coming to a definite point, the guards overlaid with white mother of pearl, the velum leaf, mounted à L’Anglaise, shows Cupid before his altar, flames glowing, two ladies of different social standing vying for his attention, and a gentleman soldier to the far right, with red cloak and plume, helmet, breastplate and spear, clearly the object of their eagerness, plain verso, 27.5cm long; an 18th century ivory fan, with fairly bulbous head, the monture slender, the guards plain and the gorge sticks carved and pierced in bands, the double paper leaf is painted with Venus in her chariot drawn by white doves, attempting to prevent Adonis from going hunting with his dogs, her ladies gathering flowers and playing with several winged cherubs, Cupid with his bow and arrow appearing in a tree to the background, to the back left, an ancient city beside the sea, verso is painted with a colourful bird in a tree, large blossoms, leaves and a butterfly, 25.5cm long (2)

λ Two 18th century fans, Bacchus and Ariadne: A fine and early 18th century ivory fan with intricate carving and decoration to the monture, the guards, which widen slightly as they meet the shoulder, are carved with shells, when the fan is open the head is seen to be elaborately shaped, and flat at the end, the gorge is delicately painted with four shaped vignettes, two having black borders tinged with gold, the remainder in gold with turquoise features, pink roses are painted within two of the vignettes, at the shoulder and mid-gorge, the lower gorge carving, sides shaped and serrated, create complex designs when the fan is closed and seen from the sides, embossed white metal loop, the vellum leaf, mounted à l’Anglaise, shows the arrival of Bacchus, and Ariadne, the chariot drawn by leopards, verso is painted with a maiden seated in a clearing, scythe in her hand, 26cm long; an 18th century fan, the monture of bone, with interesting side carving, the double paper leaf printed and hand coloured, showing a king greeting travellers arriving by water, a small boat having been launched from a larger vessel with ornate curved prow, the visitor, a soldier in red cloak and plumed helmet, bows on one knee, whilst servants unload provisions in the background, the king’s entourage area also in military dress, verso is plain, save for a simple countryside scene, 27.5cm long (2)

**A GERMAN CAP-A PIE FIELD ARMOUR FOR A CHILD IN GERMAN EARLY 17TH CENTURY STYLE, LATE 19TH/EARLY 20TH CENTURY comprising close helmet with rounded skull joined along the crest of a high medial comb, fitted at its nape with a tubular brass plume-holder chased with a bouquet of flowers, and to either side of it with four brass eyelets to accommodate laces, and at the front with visor, upper bevor and bevor attached by common pivots having domed fluted heads, the visor formed with a prominent step and centrally divided vision-slit, secured to the upper bevor by a spring-catch at the right side and with a leather pull for opening, upper bevor pierced at the right with six slipped circular ventilation-holes and secured at the right side by a wing-headed screw, lower bevor secured by a swivel-hook and fitted with pivoted prop for the upper bevor, and the neck formed with an internally hollowed rim to fit over the collar; collar of three lames front and rear, the lowest in each case deeper than the rest; breastplate formed of a medially ridged main plate flanged outwards at its lower edge to receive a fauld of one lame carrying a pair of tassets each of five lames, the lowest of which is deeper than the rest and descends to a convex edge; backplate formed of a main plate fitted at its lower edge with a waist-lame flanged outwards at its lower edge to receive a broad culet of four lames; a pair of large symmetrical pauldrons each formed of six lames of which the lowest three extend inwards only as far as the armpit and are connected in each case by a turner to a fully articulated tubular vambrace with a winged bracelet couter of three lames, a pair of tubular lower canons; a pair of gauntlets each formed of a short, flaring, pointed cuff fitted at its inside with a hinged separate plate, five metacarpal-plates, two knuckle-plates, four scaled finger-defences and a matching laterally-hinged thumb-defence; a pair of cuisses each formed of a short gutter-shaped main plate with two upper extension-plates and fitted at its lower edge with a winged poleyn of five lames; and a pair of greaves each of full-length tubular form fitted at the front with an integral broad-toed sabaton of nine lames; the main edges of the armour formed with plain inward turns; all mounted on a finely modelled and articulated gesso-covered wooden mannequin with well modelled head 48.5 cm; 58 ½ in high Provenance George F. **A RARE NORTHWEST ITALIC BRONZE HELMET OF MONTELPARO TYPE, 6TH CENTURY B.C. formed in one piece, the domed crown rising to a medial band framed by a low ridge on each side and with two applied low domed bosses front and back, pierced with a pair of holes in the centre, probably for a further boss (now missing), waisted at the base and flanged outwards to a rounded brim, the skull fitted with a large domed boss on each side, embossed over the greater part of its surface with a dense pattern of small marks, and in rich green patinated condition overall (small dents, the brim apparently bent back from a compression), the inside of the skull with a typed note 21.0 cm; 8 ¼ in high Provenance Colonel Wesley McPheron (1911-1994), acquired circa 1930. A very similar helmet from the collection of Major T. H. Jakobsson, Stockholm and previously in the collection of Count Calori, Rome, was sold Sotheby & Co., 11th May 1932, lot 214. Notably the treatment of the surface was the same as that of the present helmet. Another closely related helmet is preserved in the Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (No. MS1607) and another in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (acc. No. 08.2.2). For a discussion of this group see Cowan 2007 and Bottini et al 1988, pp. 229-230, abb. 7, 9.

A FINE GERMAN ETCHED PART ARMOUR WITH ETCHED DECORATION, DATED 1580, NUREMBURG comprising burgonet with one-piece skull rising to a high roped comb (showing slight delamination at its apex) and boxed to either side of it, fitted at its nape with tapering plume-holder and neck-guard of one lame at its the front with a pointed peak (cracked at its tip), struck at its left with the Nuremburg town mark and an armourer's mark, a crested close helmet in profile, and fitted at its left side with a single hinged cheek-piece (that of the right missing), collar formed of three lames front and rear, the lowest in each case deeper than the rest, opening at the right and hinged at the left, the lowest front plate struck with two marks en suite with those of the burgonet, fitted with an integral spaudler of six lames at the right and two (originally six) at the left; and backplate formed of a mainplate, well shaped to the shoulders and boxed at each side, stamped with two marks en suite with those of the burgonet, fitted at its lower edge with a waist lame flanged outwards to receive a culet of a single lame; decorated throughout at its main edges throughout with finely-roped inward turns and accompanying recessed borders, etched with two differing classical battle scenes on each side of the burgonet's comb, with detailed trophies-of-arms and trophies-of-hunting, cornucopia and foliage in a panel to either side of the comb, three diverging bands on the collar and the backplate and a single central band on the spaudlers, the rear plate of the collar and the backplate each including a dated scrollwork panel surmounted by an elaborate trophy-of-arms, further designs of trophies-of-arms and foliage in the borders at the main edges, the secondary edges decorated with panels of conventional foliage, all against a finely stippled previously blackened ground, and accompanied throughout by delicately engrailed borders (areas of light pitting) the burgonet 31.0 cm; 12 1/8 in high (3) The same mark appears, along with the Nuremburg town mark, on a morion acquired in Eisenach in 1889, now preserved at Hallwyl House, Stockholm. **A COMPOSITE CLOSE HELMET FOR HEAVY FIELD USE, CIRCA 1580 with heavy rounded one-piece skull rising to a high, file-roped medial comb, visor, upper bevor and lower bevor attached to it at each side by common low-domed square pivots (restored), the visor pierced in front of the file-roped step of its centrally-divided vision-slit with five rectangular ventilation-holes at each side, and fitted at the right with a lifting-peg that fits into a shaped notch cut into the upper edge of the prow-shaped upper bevor, the latter pierced at its right side with twelve cross-shaped apertures, the upper and lower bevors secured at the right side by spring-catches with push-button-releases, and the skull and bevor each flanged outwards at their lower edges to receive two gorget-plates, and the lower edge with file-roped turn (plume-holder missing, cleaned bright throughout) 32.0 cm; 12 ½ in high Provenance From an armour formerly in the Whawell collection, sold 19th April 1926. BONNIER JOAKIM: (1930-1972) Swedish Formula One racing Driver. First Swedish driver ever entering a Formula One Grand Prix. Rare signed 5 x 7 photograph by Bonnier, the attractive image depicting the Swedish driver, wearing his helmet, in a close-up portrait pose. Signed in bold blue ink `Avec mes meilleurs voeux, Joakim Bonnier´ to the upper clear area of the image. Signed photographs of Bonnier are rare and desirable in any form after his tragic death in a crash during the 24 Hours of Le Mans, in 1972, when his Lola T280-Cosworth collided with a Ferrari Daytona and Bonnier was catapulted over the barriers and into the trees. Extremely small remnants of former affixing to the edges, and corner crease to the upper left corner. G

MOSS STIRLING: (1929-2020) British Formula One Motor Racing Driver. Vintage signed colour 8 x 9 magazine image depicting Moss driving his racing car on a circuit. Signed in blue ink to a light area at the base of the image. Neatly trimmed and lightly laid down. Together with a signed 16 x 21.5 poster issued by Sporting Masters, the image depicting Moss in a head and shoulders pose wearing his racing helmet and goggles in 1960.
