Overall a super example of a ‘been there and done it’ combat helmet. The 29th Infantry division was part of the 116th Infantry and was to support the American 1st division on the western flank. Troops from the 29th division landed on Omaha beach, which historians have agreed was the hardest beach head to take of all the landing beaches as the German defences were strongest. Due to the weather conditions, they were thrown of course but were the first allied soldiers to land on the beaches of Normandy at 0630 hours on 6th June 1944. We can not say for sure that this helmet was damaged during the Normandy landings as the division continued to serve after the invasion.

Wilhelm Busch, German 1832-1908- Monkey eating a cherry, seated on a helmet with a metal shield behind; oil on canvas, 61 x 38 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Busch was a highly versatile artist who also worked as a poet, humorist, and illustrator. He drew on the tropes of folk humour as well as a profound knowledge of German literature and art to satirise contemporary life, any kind of piety, Catholicism, Philistinism, religious morality, bigotry, and moral uplift. The present work is typical of his style, with his swirling brushstrokes evoking the shimmering surfaces of the helmet and shield, amongst which the monkey perches. The subject is highly enigmatic, more so than many of Busch's works, which more typically depict landscapes or figures in an interior, often based on the compositions of earlier Dutch artists such as Adriaen Brouwer (c.1605-1638). This painting is perhaps inviting a more allegorical interpretation, drawing on the traditional understanding of the monkey as a symbol of lust or gluttony, indulging in a juicy red cherry, whilst surrounded by gleaming silver and red drapery.

Lot 116

After Pierre-Narcisse Guérin, French 1774-1833- Dido and Aeneas; pencil and watercolour heightened with white on paper, 42.3 x 52.5 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work is after a large-scale oil on canvas by Guérin, dating to c.1815, and held in the collection of the Louvre, in Paris [no.5184]. The work depicts a scene in Virgil's 'Aeneid', in which the Trojan hero Aeneas, upon his arrival into the city, tells his story to Dido, the Queen of Carthage. It was at this point that the two fell in love with each other. The composition emphasises the attributes of the two characters, with Dido's status suggested by her relaxed posture, reclining on a sofa, whilst Aeneas's helmet, often used to designate the hero, recalls his role as a soldier.

His left hand clutches the rein of the horse's bridle, and he does not wear armour, other than on his lower legs and feet, with his toes bare.
