A matched pair of Grand Tour lacquered bronze figures, of Mercury after Giambologna, raised on Zephyr with winged ankles and helmet and right arm raised, lacking caduceus; and companion figure probably Diana, with left arm raised with laurel spray and holding cornucopia in her right, each on Sienna marble base with figural cast frieze, both with some damage, approx 87cm high.

*Napoleon I (Emperor of France). An original pencil drawing of Napoleon on his deathbed, attributed to Captain Ward at St Helena, c. 5th-7th May 1821, an amateur outline pencil sketch on tracing paper, showing Napoleon lying dead with two pillows under his head, dressed in full military uniform, with helmet, medals and cape, some spotting and sl. creasing, approx. 11.5 x 20 cm, glued at corners to a later album leaf, with an old ink inscription beneath, 'Taken by Captain Ward, who was quartered at St. Helena at the time'. Provenance: Believed to be from Marie Wragg de Winton, a South Wales or Midlands artist (fl. 1839-60), and since handed down through the family. The implication is that Captain Ward was Captain of the Guards responsible for guarding the dead Emperor before his funeral, and that subsequently Captain Ward gave the sketch to his friend Madame Marie Wragg de Winton. An Indian powder-flask, circa 1830 with leather-covered body of flattened spherical form, studded over its surface with numerous iron nails, fitted with a contemporary East India Company brass shako-plate at the front, iron nozzle, and horn cut-off; an English manufactured Indian talwar by Mole, Birmingham, 19th Century, of characteristic form, the blade stamped 'Mole Birmn', and the hilt fitted with an integral loop for a suspension belt; and an Indian etched steel parade helmet, 19th Century, with one-piece skull rising to a point, fitted with a brow plate embossed with an elephant, two-piece neck-guard, with a short spike on each side at the temple, and etched throughout with panels of scrolling foliage the first: 24.8 cm ; 9.75iin (3)
A rare Naval Officer's sword with folding guard by T & I. Gill, 83 St James St., London, circa 1806-08 with well preserved curved regulation blade etched and gilt on a blued panel over three-quarters of its length with an elaborate arrangement of foliage, the crowned Royal cypher, the figure of Brittania and a fouled anchor on one side, the crowned Royal arms and makerÕs details on the reverse, gilt-brass stirrup-hilt fitted with so-called attack-guard locked by a blued catch, gilt-brass lionhead pommel, and chequered ivory grip, in its original leather scabbard with large brass mounts including signed locket (the scabbard leather with extensive damage); a composite German rapier, partly 17th Century, with slender fullered blade, iron hilt of rounded bars incorporating a scalloped plate at the base, and plummet-shaped pommel (grip missing, now dismantled); a French regulation small-sword, early 19th Century, the blade sparsely etched with trophies over the lower portion, silvered brass hilt incorporating a boatshell-guard and the pommel formed as a plumed helmet (now dismantled); and a transitional small-sword blade, mid-17th Century, of flattened diamond section, stamped 'Sebastian' and 'Hernandez' within a narrow fuller on the respective faces the first: 68.5 cm ; 27 in blade (4)
a French model 1885 helmet and cuirass for an Officer of Cuirassiers, Third Republic the helmet with full gilt-brass mounts including original velvet-and leather-backed chinscales, original leather lining with arsenal stamps, and original horsehair tuft and mane ( the skull with light tarnish and rust patches, plume missing, mane worn); the cuirass of burnished steel, the breast- and back-plates each with the Officer's pattern arsenal inscription and dated 1892 and 1893 respectively, and the back-plate fitted with later waist-strap, and later leather-backed shoulder-chains each with gilt-brass clasp and lion mask boss of regulation type (3). the helmet 27.3cm., 10.75in
A Flemish full armour for a cuirassier, circa 1620-30 comprising close helmet, with fluted two-piece skull rear-swept to a scalloped washer retained by a slotted finial, fitted with large spirally fluted plume-holder at the nape of the neck, large neck-guard of a single lame front and rear, visor with a pair of vision slots (lifting peg missing), upper bevor pierced with a circular arrangement of heart-shaped breathes on each side and retained by a later hook, lower bevor pivoting on common bolts with the visor and upper bevor (gorget missing), breast-plate with a shallow medial ridge and flanged outwards at the base, skirt of seven scalloped lames, the upper lame embossed with a roped horizontal panel, matching back-plate carrying a strongly bombasted skirt of ten lames with an additional plate on each side at the base, the front skirt carrying a pair of tassets each of seventeen lames and incorporating a winged poleyn, associated greaves hinged on the outside and fitted with articulated sabatons of eight lames, a pair of full arm defences including large pauldrons, winged couters fully articulated over the inner joint of the elbow, a pair of fingered gauntlets (each with some finger lames missing), and decorated throughout with triple incised lines, the principal borders with finely roped turns and the secondary lames with scalloped edges (minor cracks and repairs, some lames now detached) Stand not included. This armour is of a notably high quality for the period.
A German pikeman's pot helmet, mid-17th Century with two-piece hemispherical skull boldly embossed with flutes radiating from a central conical finial on a large washer, formed with a plain band at the base, broad down-turned brim with recessed border stamped with the armourer's mark, the letter 'E' within a rectangle, embossed in imitation of lining rivets, plain turned edge, fitted with plume-holder at the rear and with provision for a sliding nasal at the front (the nasal bar and retaining staple missing); and a siege or sapper's helmet, 17th Century, with low medially-ridge hemispherical skull formed in one piece, fitted with a pointed peak front and rear, a pair of pendant u-shaped cheek-pieces, retaining its original padded lining, and the outer surface with an early black-painted finish (one cheek-piece detached) the first: 20 cm ; 8 in (2)
