A 1914-15 Star, British War and Victory medals to 2356 Pte John Steele, KOSB, together with Certificate of Disembodiment on Demobilization, the latter stating his regimental number 311246 and rank Scout Acting Sergeant, describing Steele as Battalion Shot and having the specialist qualification of sniper, having been mentioned in despatches on three occasions, the lot also includes a group postcard-photograph inscribed "This is my section, Atbara, Soudan, Apr 1918", a photograph of Steele in later life, a typewritten poem by Steele, 1914 Princess Mary gift tin, insignia and three of his watercolours, one depicting Steele in tropical clothing and Wolseley helmet with a monkey, and two of landscapes respectively annotated "Achi Baba Hill, Gallipoli. This is taken from a pencil sketch I done two or three days before we left . The remains of Kritha Village & 5 wind mill, stumps are on the left of the picture. PS, this was taken from the trench Frank Thomson was killed in." and "The Battlefield of Romani [Egypt] on top of the sand hill with small hut. Lieut Scott Elliott of Dfs [Dumfries] took observation all day during the Battle of Romani Aug 4th 1916".
