A VERY FINE PAIR OF CARVED IVORY AND SILVER-GILT GERMANIC KNIGHTS, PROBABLY AUSTRIAN, LATE 19TH CENTURY. Each finely modeled with ornate repoussed armor in the form of Germanic knights, one with a winged helmet with moveable visor and each with traditional weaponry, the faces well carved in ivory and with each figure atop a reticulated silver plinth. Stamped 17th century style German hallmarks. Height 9.5 inches and 11.25 inches (24 and 28.5 cm).
AN EXCEPTIONAL GERMAN CARVED IVORY AND SILVER MOUNTED TANKARD WITH ROMAN BATTLE SCENE, HANAU, CIRCA 1880-1890. The cylindrical form masterfully carved in high relief with a chaotic Roman battle scene of mounted horseman battling Turks below a silver compressed domical cover with embossed and chased horsemen in strapwork reserves and surmounted with a well carved Roman feathered helmet finial. The ivory handle emanating from an elephant head mount, well carved with an amusing seated soldier displaying sword and shield. The shaped silver foot embossed with lounging Roman soldiers within strapwork cartouches, and with later Augsburg marks. Height 16.5 inches (42 cm). A VERY FINE SIGNED AND DATED FRENCH CARVED IVORY TRIPTYCH FIGURE OF A NOBLEMAN, 18TH CENTURY. Carved in full round. He holds a helmet with plume, the hinged torso opens to reveal a scene, presumably of death. Exquisite detail throughout, signed on base "A. Corre" and dated "1774". Resting on a wood plinth sitting on an ivory disc. Height of ivory 9.5 inches (24 cm), overall height 11.25 inches (28.5 cm).
A LARGE NEOCLASSICAL CARVED MARBLE BUST OF A ROMAN STATESMAN, 20TH CENTURY. Fully carved in a round life-sized figure, the head in white marble with a modeled gray marble helmet, set in a carved marble shoulders and chest with conforming armor and raised on a square plinth. Height 38 inches.
An interesting lot of militaria, comprising a collection of Great War battlefield recoveries, including a Great War German sniper/machine gunner’s breastplate and contemporary helmet, various models of hand grenade (inert), a gas alarm hand bell, the side of a rare Chauchat machine gun magazine; together with a Great War German soldier’s wooden box, with metal plate stamped ‘Jos. Brucke’ and with an Ehrenkreus, an inert French shell, and other items.
A 5th Dragoon Guards Sergeant’s parade helmet, WM skull with brass peak binding, brass wreath across the brow, helmet plate with ‘5’ surmounting a WM star, brass top mount and spike with rosette button and a red and white horsehair plume, leather backed brass chinscales suspended from brass ear rosettes, leather lining; a 5th D.G. green and buff side cap with badge, and a pair of breeches; offered together with a good collection of photographs, ephemera and other effects of the late owner 394423 Squadron Sergeant Major Reginal Arthur Baker M.B.E. 5th D.G., including uniformed portraits, group portraits e.g. ‘Hochkiss Gun Section 3rd Troop B Squadron’ and various documents.’ PLEASE NOTE: This helmet appears to be of the wrong colour – the skull should be yellow metal rather than white. The reason for the anomaly is not known, and the helmet is the one that was found with the soldier in question’s effects
