A VERY RARE 1878 PATTERN BRITISH FOREIGN SERVICE HELMET WITH COVER, the inside with maker's label 'Ellwood & Son, London' and 'For India', complete with its original pagri and top button, evidence of badge mounting holes behind pagri at front with chinstrap absent. This early pattern, intended for India, of reinforced straw construction with no crushing often experienced with the cork variant. The rim band secure and complete with the detachable cover in very good order with all stitching intact.

After Jean de Boulogne - known as Giambologna (1529-1608) - A pair of antique 19th Century bronze model statues in the forms of Mercury and Fortuna. Both portrayed as nude with Fortuna having small drape across her loins and Mercury having a winged pegasus helmet and winged ankles. Both stood upon open mouthed cherub mask and wheel. Victorian 17th (Duke of Cambridge’s Own) Officers Lance Cap in Named Tin, leather bodied helmet with gilt braid and bullion wire to the peak. Helmet has Victorian period officers lance cap plate to the front. Lion head side bosses with blue velvet backed scaled chin chain. White cloth mortar board top with thick bullion wire cord running diagonally from each corner. Bullion embroidered officers plume socket holder with VR cipher to the centre. Helmet is complete with an original white swan feather plume having gilt metal socket fitting. Interior is missing its sweatband and has a red cloth lining fitted. The helmet is housed in a metal storage tin with original name plaque which is engraved “C A Warner Esq 17th Lancers”. A label inside the tin states that Captain Warner was severely wounded at Strydfontein on 2nd December 1900. The lance cap in our opinion has got some restored, replaced and cleaned parts.
British Officers Lance Cap of Stafford Vere Hotchkin 21st Empress of India Lancers, superb untouched example of an officers lance cap from the early transitional period between Queen Victoria and Edward VII. The helmet body remains in very good condition with bullion wire braiding to the peak. Gilt metal lion head side bosses and leather backed linked chin chains. To the centre of the helmet is an original two piece officers lance cap plate with battle honours and regimental title. French grey cloth mortar board top with thick bullion wire cord running diagonally from each corner. Bullion embroidered plume socket with VR cipher to the centre. The helmet is complete with its original white feather plume with gilt metal socket fitting. Interior of the helmet has the original leather sweatband but the cloth lining is now absent. Helmet is housed in the original storage tin which has brass name plate to the lid engraved, “Stafford Hotchkin Esq 21st (E of I) Lancers”. Very good untouched example showing a nice patina. Stafford Vere Hotchkin was born in 1876. He was known for being a land owner, High Sheriff of Rutland and for a brief period was a Conservative member of parliament. During WW1 he was awarded the Military Cross whilst serving with the Royal Horse Artillery / Royal Field Artillery. He was most famous however for his design of golf courses, most famously the course at Woodhall Spa Golf Club. He died on 8th August 1953.
Bedfordshire Imperial Yeomanry Officers Lance Cap, fine example of the black leather bodied officers lance cap fitted with silver gilt officers helmet plate with crowned Imperial eagle with castle to centre of chest, enclosed in laurel and oakleaves wreath. Velvet backed officers chinstrap and gilt metal lion head side bosses. Black ribbed cloth to the sides of the mortar board with patent leather top. Gilt metal roped plume socket with plain button. Helmet is complete with a black feather plume with gilt socket mount. Interior with leather sweatband and cloth lining. Carter & Co details to the interior crown. Generally a good example.
Great War Hood Battalion Royal Naval Division Steel Helmet Shell, good untouched example of a 1st pattern steel helmet with raw edge. Heavy rough textured finish to the exterior of the shell with remains of black painted insignia of the Hood battalion to both sides. The shell is stamped with H over S and 231. Chinstrap posts with split rivets and part of the original leather chinstrap remains. Some rusting and wear.
Great War Naval Division Steel Helmet, interesting example of a 2nd pattern brodie helmet with trim to the helmet edge. The shell has a thick dark paint finish and a painted white anchor to the centre. Split pin rivets to the chinstrap mounts and remains of the leather strap but no liner system. Painted to the inside is “3748”, possibly a service number. Good untouched shell.
Great War Attributed Welsh Regiment Marked Brodie Helmet, good example of a 2nd pattern steel helmet with trim to the helmet edge. Painted to the centre of the helmet is a regimental insignia, which appears to be Prince of Wales plumes to the centre of a circle, but this is worn and not that clear. Helmet is complete with its original oilskin liner, underside is inked “R. J. REED 75826”. Helmet shows heavy wear and pitting etc. Good untouched example. 75826 Private Robert J Reed, Welsh Regiment.
WW1 Italian Adrian Pattern Steel Combat Helmet, good example of an Italian Adrian pattern helmet as worn during WW1 with green paint finish and painted insignia of the 16th Italian Infantry regiment, crown over “16”. Helmet has the original brown leather sweatband and black leather liner tongues. Brown leather chinstrap still fitted. Some surface rusting but generally a good example. Italian examples are not that easy to find.

Helmet is complete with the original liner and webbing chinstrap. Liner is maker marked BMB and dated 1939. Helmet shows expected service wear but is generally a good example.

Original NFS decal to the centre and original district number decal of “38” (London). Complete with its original 1938 dated liner system. Painted to the underside of the brim is the original owners details, “A.H.BRACHER. 241188 38E-3X”. Very good condition example.
