British 1847 Albert Pattern Helmet of the 5th (Princess Charlotte of Wales) Dragoon Guards, good untouched example being brass shell with large early pattern regimental helmet plate to the centre having central strap with regimental details. Fine and ornate brass detailing around the shell in the form of floral pattern. Large side rosettes which hold the large linked brass leather backed chin scales. Ornate plume socket which holds the black horse hair plume with top rosette mount. Interior of the helmet retains the original leather liner with an old label attached. Overall the helmet remains in excellent untouched condition. This type of helmet was worn by the regiment when they served as part of the heavy brigade during the battle of Balaclava during the Crimean war.

Leather backed linked chinstrap and side rosettes. Interior with leather sweatband. Stamped to the inside with WD, broad arrow and 1909 date. Helmet is also stamped with “PROPERTY OF ALDERSHOT TATTOO”. Generally good condition.

George V 17th (Duke of Cambridge’s Own) Lancers Officers Lance Cap, fine example of the black leather body lance cap with white melton cloth mortar board top having thick gilt bullion wire cord running diagonally across and running down the corners. Officers pattern plate with silvered overlay of the Royal Arms, battle honours, regimental scroll and skull and crossbones with “OR GLORY” scroll below. Peak stitched with bullion wire. Gilt metal lion head side bosses and velvet backed linked officers chinstrap. Bullion cord plume boss with VR cipher set on black backing. Gilt metal officers plume socket holder, holding in place the fine quality white swan feather stitched officers full dress plume. Interior of the helmet retains the original leather sweatband and cloth lining with gilt tooled retailers details. Some wear to the white top but overall a very good example of a desirable officers lance cap.

WW1 British Divisionally Marked Steel Combat Helmet, good example of an early 1st pattern steel combat helmet retaining much of the original green paint finish to the exterior and interior of the shell. To each side is a painted divisional flash in the form of yellow triangle with four black bars underneath (Inniskilling Fusiliers?). Interior of the helmet retains the cloth liner body but no oilskin liner. Split rivet fittings to the chinstrap mounts.

WW1 British 1st Pattern Steel Combat Hemet Shell, being a good example of the first pattern raw edge helmet with much of the original apple green paint finish to the exterior and interior of the shell. The helmet has large painted yellow fused grenade with “RE” and Royal Engineers motto “UBIQUE”, we are of the opinion that this has been added post WW1. No liner or chinstrap.

WW1 British Regimentally / Divisionally Marked Steel Combat Helmet, interesting example of a 2nd pattern brodie steel helmet with rimmed edge. Exterior with painted insignia to both sides of the helmet in the form of a diagonally divided rectangle with red and yellow. Complete with its original oilskin liner with red ink brodie stamp. Leather chinstrap now absent. Appears the helmet has been overpainted at some point and then this has been removed, original paint can be seen to the crown of the interior shell.

WW1 British Cameron Highlanders Officers Steel Combat Helmet, superb untouched example of a 2nd pattern British brodie helmet with rim. Much of the original dark combat paint finish remains to the exterior. Original painted regimental insignia to the side. Interior of the helmet has the original private purchase Bates leather and khaki cloth liner system. Original brown leather chinstrap. Helmet shows some service wear but overall a very good example. It was common practice for British officers to privately purchase more comfortable liners to put with their issue steel combat helmets.

WW1 British 15th (Scottish) Divisionally Marked Steel Combat Helmet Shell, fine untouched example retaining nearly all of its original blackened paint finish to the exterior of the shell. Painted to the centre is a small divisional formation sign for the 15th division. Shell with rim to the edge. Helmet is complete with the original brown leather chinstrap but no liner system. Some dents to the exterior of the shell but otherwise a very good example.

WW1 British Fusilier Marked Steel Combat Helmet, good untouched example of a 2nd pattern British helmet with rim covering. Rough textured paint finish to the exterior of the shell and painted insignia in the form of a white / cream rectangle with red fusilier fused grenade insignia. Complete with a very light oilskin cloth liner system and brown leather chinstrap. Helmet shows quite a lot of service wear.

WW1 British Royal Warwickshire Birmingham Pals Marked Steel Combat Helmet, good untouched example of a 2nd pattern brodie helmet with rim cover. Helmet retains all of its original rough textured dark brown combat paint finish. Painted to the centre of the helmet is a strip around the whole lower section in the regimental colours of the Royal Warwickshire regiment (orange / blue). Helmet is complete with its original leather liner system which has red brodie stamp to the underside. Also complete with its brown leather chinstrap. A superb example. This is identified as Birmingham Pals by a large album of information sheets sent by units serving in on the Western Front in reply to a questionnaire by the Imperial War Museum in 1917. This is in the IWM library.

WW1 British 2nd Pattern Brodie Steel Combat Helmet, good untouched example of a WW1 British 2nd pattern helmet retaining nearly all of its original slightly rough textured paint finish to the exterior and interior of the shell. Helmet is complete with its original oilskin pattern liner and original brown leather chinstrap (damaged). Brodie ink stamp to the underside of the liner. Generally a good example of the standard pattern British combat helmet of WW1.

WW1 British Steel Helmet with Khaki Cloth Cover and Shoulder Strap, interesting British steel helmet which has been encased in a stitched khaki cover with a produced khaki chinstrap and a long shoulder strap. Rust bleeding towards the top of the shell and through to the cover. Helmet not accessible unless all stitching is removed. First time we have seen a helmet and cover in this format. Possibly private purchase?

Extremely Rare WW1 British Tank Crew Protective Helmet, this specially produced helmet as issued to the WW1 British tank crews is constructed from four sections of deep brown leather which is riveted together along the central seam and side panels. Interior of the helmet retains its original leather sweatband and cork spacers. The helmet retains the remains of the original brown leather chinstrap. Some scuffing and areas of dryness to the leather but overall a very good example of one of the, if not the rarest item of WW1 British headdress. These helmets were issued to British tank crews but they were not popular with tankers and many crew members did not use them. They were to be worn with the tank splatter mask but these were found not to be fit for purpose as shell splinters could penetrate the leather body. It is said that also from a distance they looked like the German steel helmet, so on the confusion of the battle field could have been picked off by British infantry and snipers.

Portuguese Steel Combat Helmet, interesting mild steel ribbed brodie style helmet which was produced during the first world war period but mostly used in the post war years. Green painted shell with yellow painted cross insignia to the front. Helmet is complete with its original leather sweatband and cloth lining. Heavily worn and some paint loss. A small number of these helmets were apparently worn by a Spanish Fascist unit during the Spanish Civil War.

Czech M-31 Steel Combat Helmet, good example retaining much of the original dark brown paint finish to the exterior and interior of the shell. Complete with its three leather liner pads mounted to steel liner band. Remains of the thin brown leather chinstrap. Helmet has a collection label attached, this helmet is part of a small Scandinavian collection we are selling in this auction. These helmets were imported by the Spanish Republic and many images can be found with these being worn during the Spanish Civil War.

1930’s British London County Council London Fire Brigade Merryweather Brass Fire Helmet, good original example of the brass fireman’s helmet with LCC LFB badge to the front. Top comb with relief of dragons. Large rosette side bosses with linked brass leather backed chinstrap. Complete with the original leather liner, some damage and wear. Some denting to the brass shell but generally a good example of a scarce fire helmet.

Royal Navy Officers Foreign Service Helmet of Captain H R H Vaughan, Secretary to Admiral Lord Cork during the Attack on Narvik in 1940, good example of the white cork foreign service helmet with folded pagri with top band in navy blue. Complete with the top vent and thin brown leather chinstrap. Green cloth lined underside with leather sweatband and crimson artificial silk lining. Portsmouth tailors details to the leather panel to the crown of the helmet. Housed in the original japanned storage tin with white painted owners name, “H.R.H. Vaughan R.N”. Some dents to the tin and the helmet is dusty. Herbert Reginald Henry Vaughan was the son of Herbert Stanley Vaughan, store officer in Hong Kong 1899-1911. Herbert Vaughan served in the Royal Navy between 1911 and 1945. He served on HMS Triad in the Persian Gulf between 1928-1930, he would have worn this helmet during that time. During the second world war, he served on the staff of Lord Cork and was present during the attack on Narvik in 1940.

WW2 Period Royal Navy Officers Foreign Service Helmet, near mint condition example of the foreign service helmet with cloth covered cork body. Central pagri with the top band in navy blue. Complete with the vent top and the original thin brown leather chinstrap. Interior of the helmet remains in near mint condition with leather sweatband and artificial silk lining. Helmet is housed in the original metal japanned storage tin with remains of paper label with ink name, “Mr H L DICKSON RN BARRACKS”. Locking catch missing from tin but the helmet is an excellent example.

British Tropical Camouflaged Dispatch Riders Steel Combat Helmet, interesting example of a wartime period dispatch riders helmet which retains much of the original tropical paint finish, indicating wear in probably Sicily and North Africa. To the front of the helmet is painted divisional sign of the 78th Infantry division, this was possibly done at a later stage than the tropical camouflage finish. Interior of the helmet retains the original liner system with horsehair padding. Sweatband with BMB mark but the date is not clear as the stitch lines go through the date. Overall a good example of an original tropical camouflaged dispatch riders helmet.

Imperial German Prussian Other Ranks Pickelhaube, good untouched example of the standard pattern Prussian other ranks pickelhaube as worn at the early stages of WW1. The leather bodied helmet is complete with its original other ranks brass helmet plate, state and reichs cockades and leather chinstrap. Brass front trim and rear spine section. Complete with other ranks pattern circular spike base with domed rivets and short pattern spike. Interior of the helmet retains its original leather liner, but this has become dry and some small sections missing towards the rear. Remains of ink issue stampings can be seen in the rear peak but these are not readable now. Overall a good example of a standard Prussian other ranks helmet.

Imperial German Prussian Tin Pickelhaube, good untouched example of the black metal / tin pickelhaube with other ranks brass Prussian helmet plate, missing the orb, Prussian state cockade and reichs cockade. Other ranks leather chinstrap still present. Original brass spike base with moulded securing pins and non removable brass other ranks spike. Brass rear spine fitted to the shell. Interior retains the original leather liner and felt padding to the top. Some scuffs to the exterior and a couple of minor dents but otherwise a good example of a scarce helmet which are often classed as ersatz. The famous German toy maker Bing was responsible for manufacturing may of these tin helmets.

Imperial German Prussian Officers Pickelhaube, untouched example of a leather bodied helmet with officers Prussian helmet plate to the centre. Scaled officers chinstraps with reichs and state cockades. Officers spike on circular base with securing stars. Interior with brown leather sweatband and cloth officers lining. Green and red coverings to the undersides of the peaks. Helmet fittings have dark uncleaned patina, the leather covering has cracked and has sections missing from the rear.

Some pitting and wear to the shell but generally still a good variation of the Austrian pattern combat helmet from WW1. Retaining much of its original Austrian light brown paint finish to the shell. Evidence of a post home label once being present to the reverse. Interior of the shell has the Berndorfer bear stamping and size 66 stamp. Metal liner band and three leather liner pads. The liner pads have at some point had a oil protective put over them. Part of a leather chinstrap remains. The helmet shows wear and has some areas of pitting but generally still a good example of a rare WW1 steel helmet. Imperial German M-17 Camouflaged Steel Combat Helmet, fine example of a standard model 1917 steel combat helmet which is finished in a fine camouflage paint finish in the typical form with green, brown and mustard yellow with black separation lines. Interior of the helmet has the metal liner band and white leather pads. Shell is stamped “BF 64”. Some scuffs to the exterior but the camouflage finish remains bright and clear.

Rare Imperial German Model 1918 Ear Cut Out Steel Combat Helmet, untouched example of the scarce model German helmet from WW1 which was issued to cavalry and signals troops. The helmet has the remains of the original field grey paint finish to the exterior and interior of the shell. Metal liner band to the interior with three white leather liner pads, these show wear and some areas of damage. The ET64 mark can just be made out to the inside of the shell, some heavy pitting to this section. Some surface rusting to the shell and light pitting. Overall a very good example of a very rare Imperial German steel helmet. Post 1902 Royal Marine Light Infantry Officers Home Service Helmet Plate, universal pattern officers helmet plate with crown replacing top arm, laurel spray with anchor and silvered strung bugle to the bottom and scroll with Gibraltar to the top. Pierced circlet with motto “PER MARE PER TERRAM” set upon blue enamel backing. Silvered globe to the centre of the bade. Three lug fittings to the reverse. We believed that the crown was changed from Victorian once Edward VII took the throne.

The exterior of the shell has been painted in a battleship grey finish which is typical of shore establishment helmets and also those who served on armed ships. Interior of the helmet retains the original leather liner. Some surface pitting to the interior of the helmet. Shell is stamped “Q64” but the batch number is not clear. Leather liner is dry and has flaked in places

German Soldier Hero Range Plaque, interesting alloy plaque showing the profile figure of a German soldier wearing transitional pattern steel helmet. Mounted within a silver painted wooden surround with small triangular hook to the top. 13 ½ cms in diameter.

Royal Air Force C-Type Flying Helmet Ensemble of Flight Lieutenant W (Wally) Walters D.F.C, untouched example of a brown leather 1st pattern C-Type flying helmet complete with leather chinstrap. Helmet is complete with its original wiring loom and headphones. Jack plug attached to the wiring loom. Helmet is complete with an original G-Type oxygen mask which is complete with mic and original rubber hose with clip to end. Copper wire to the nose section of the oxygen mask. Set is also complete with a pair of RAF Mk VII flying goggles which retain much of the original blue paint finish to the exterior. Stamped to the centre of the goggles with crowned AM and “22C/826 1858”. Goggles also complete with the original strap. The set has been mounted to a polystyrene display head for a long time which has resulted in the helmet almost becoming moulded in this form. This set was acquired by the current vendor from the original owner of the set, Flight Lieutenant W (Wally) Walters DFC, who served in the RAF from 31st April 1941 until 13th May 1946. He served in the following units, 31 ANS, 9 AFU, 15 OTU, 428 Squadron, 82 OTU, 1655 MTU, 163 Squadron, 571 Squadron and 1383 TCU. Good untouched set.
