A cast copper-alloy anthropomorphic mount dating to the Roman period, c. AD 43-410. The object takes the form of the goddess Minerva, rendered from the shoulders up. The face depicted realistically with eyes, nose, mouth and hairline clearly defined (though now partially obscured by corrosion products), she wears her characteristic Corinthian style helmet with a curving, high crest. A curving, grooved line at the base of her neck may be intended to imply the presence of armour or a cuirass. The reverse of the mount is plain with the exception of a projecting stub at its lower edge and traces of a silvery substance which may represent solder. Condition: good, though some areas rather corroded, ferrous concretion at base. Length: 52mm. Width at base: 25mm. Discussion: Minerva appears on a wide variety of Roman objects, though primarily razor or spatula handles. This example, with its attachment lug and rather heavyset construction, is probably a vessel or furniture mount.Provenance: from the collection of a metal detectorist.
A complete cast copper-alloy swivelling seal matrix of probable earlier 18th century date, c. 1700-1750. The seal demonstrates a curved, broadly semi-circular handle with a much abraded suspension loop at its apex. Its edges decorated with moulded scrollwork, one side of the handle is decorated with a man standing left holding a walking cane, while on the opposing face a woman wearing a large dress stands facing the viewer, holding aloft a fan in her left hand. Held between the edges of the frame by means of an internal axis bar, the bezel still rotating freely. On one side, the design of a neo-classical male bust wearing a crested helmet and armour is visible facing right. The other side of the matrix is decorated with a quasi-armorial motif consisting a stag facing right, set within a sub-oval garnished border with two birds seated at the apex. Condition: very good, mid brown patina. Length: c.36mm.Provenance: from the collection of a metal detectorist.
