A PRESENTATIONAL LACQUERED WOOD KABUTO AND MENPO Japan, probably Meiji period (1868-1912) A seido-nuri (imitating bronze) lacquered wood kabuto (helmet) with five-tiered shikoro and gilt-lacquered wood shishi maedate (forecrest), the Fukigaeshi shows the mukai cho crest symbol. The lacquered iron menpo (face mask) with three-lame yodarekake. HEIGHT 20 and 27 cm Condition: Worn condition, crackling and losses to the lacquer. Generally, well preserved. He married Elizabeth, daughter of Samuel Parker of Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, on 18 October 1798 at St Paul's Church, Covent Garden, London. They had twelve children. William Palgrave died in Dublin, where he is buried.The present watercolour is copied by Ferranti from an earlier portrait in oils, known from an engraving by Joseph Brown.A volunteer unit, the Norfolk Yeomanry (originally titled the Norfolk Rangers), was raised in 1782, during the American Revolutionary War by the Hon George Townshend. From its formation, the Norfolk Yeomanry wore the Tarleton pattern helmet, red tunics with gold lace frogging and blue facings, all as illustrated in Ferranti’s watercolour. Along with many other Yeomanry regiments, the Norfolk Yeomanry, as formed in 1782, was disbanded in 1828 although it was twice later recreated.We are grateful to Christopher Joll for his assistance with the catalogue entry.Condition report: Captain Palgrave: the paper is discoloured, and browns more intensely around the sitter. The paper is speckled with light-coloured foxing throughout. Mrs Palgrave: the paper is lightly discoloured, with more intense browns around her turban. There are a few dark prominent spots of foxing, and one or two white spots also. A couple of very tiny water stains to her clothing. Neither seen outside of frames.

Two RAF Pilot's Mk4A flying helmets, stores reference 22C/1303989, with reflective tape to the rear of crowns, two-part nylon chinstraps, outer tinted blast visor and clear inner visors, original drab green painted shells, one helmet complete with exterior cloth cover (2)Condition report: Helmet 1 - Size med/broad. Exterior visor badly scratched and scuffed, likewise to the interior visor. Shell is scratched, scuffed and has several areas of paint flaking. Foam lining to interior is badly degrading and only partial sections remain, leather liner appears intact. Coating around the jack is very degraded.Helmet 2 (marked ML) - Size med/broad. Outer visor general good with minor wear, inner visor likewise. Shell with sections of paint loss and interior with shedding to the foam liner.Please see additional images.
Two RAF pilot's Mk3C flying helmets, stores reference 22C/1303173, fitted with mask hook and straps, reflective tape to the rear of crown, complete with both visors, one marked 'Barnfield IX.33', with Denis Ferranti LTD electrical headsets (2)Issued throughout the 1970s and 80s, these are one of the most popular RAF bone domes.Condition report: Helmet 1 - Inner visor heavily scratched and scuffed, some slight nicks to edges. Exterior visor also scratched and scuffed. The dome seems intact but with crazing, scuffing and scratching to the paintwork. Foam lining is shedding heavily. 2nd helmet (Barnfield) - Scratches and scuffs all over the dome, interior purple lining partially ripped, foam lining heavily shedding, inner visor generally good order although the exterior visor is scuffed and scratched.
