First World War.- Raper (Robert George, Major, 8th Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment, solicitor in Battle, East Sussex, killed in action at Fricourt 1916, 1877-1916) War Diary..., duplicated typescript, title and 183pp., marked as "Copy" on title, slightly browned, some creasing, original half calf, gilt spine, edges and spine slightly rubbed, 4to, n.d. [c. 1920].⁂ ?Unpublished. "We decided to die like gentlemen." - Raper."15 November [1915] It was miserable work going the rounds as the water in the trenches was icy cold and in some places one sank in the mud and water well over the knees. The men were wretched and the ground was white with frost. 16 November [1915] A curious incident occurred in the early hours. Sergt Wolling... was in a trench on my right towards a crater between the lines. Suddenly one of the bombers... shouted out 'they are coming' and Wolling felt himself seized... . He wrenched his leg free [and] threw one bomb between his legs at the man behind him which exploded and the man, he thought, said 'Have mercy'... . 15 April [1916] I saw Colonel Winston Churchill riding in the town the other afternoon. He is in command of a Scotch Fusilier Regiment which holds the line a mile or two North of us. He was wearing a steel helmet and looked a truculent fellow." - Raper.On February 4th, 1916, Major Raper became second in command of the brigade. They Brigade then moved to Armentieres, and then to Albert, and on July 2nd they attacked and captured Fricourt. As the Commanding Officer stated, Major Raper "was gallantly superintending an operation by two companies and had just succeeded in carrying out his object, when a machine gun swept the whole front and he was killed instantaneously. Earlier in the day" he added, "I had occasion to notice several pieces of excellent work that he did, and I intend sending in his name to the higher authorities." Major Raper was mentioned in Sir Douglas Haig's Despatch dated November 13th, 1916.

A Second World War RAF Issue Wolseley Helmet, with six panelled crown, three fold puggaree with RAF coloured flash, the brim bound in tan leather, with leather chin strap, green cloth brim lining, white leather sweatband and 'coolair aluminex' lining to the crown; a Bushman's Friend Hunting Knife, by Cambridge & Co., Sheffield, with leather sheath; two Coshes, one covered in plaited linen, the other with wood haft; also, a Fritum rimfire revolver, lacking cylinder, a pair of leather boxing gloves, a volt meter and a small leather case (9). Helmet is dirty, but no damage. Brass chin strap hooks are corroded. The flash needs re-stitiching at the top. No visible markings.

A German Third Reich Fire Department Officer's Dagger/Sidearm, the 41cm double edge steel blade faintly etched with martial trophies within foliate strapwork, the nickel plated hilt with flat trefoil quillons to the crossguard centred by a helmet and axe, wire bound leather grip and acanthus capped ball pommel, the brown leather scabbard with nickel plated mounts and twin suspender rings, 54.5cm. Blade is very rust pitted making the etching difficult to make out.The nickel plating of the hilt and scabbard is very worn. The scabbard had a crease to the leather just below the locket.

Abt.1' - a Waffen-SS Photograph Album, containing twenty five stuck-in and two loose photographs relating to the Anti-Tank Section of the 1st SS-Panzer Division 'Adolf Hitler', and showing Waffen-SS officers and men in field-grey Assault Gun type uniforms, the usual field-grey tunics and black Panzer uniforms, with green cloth binding embossed with a German steel helmet and title in silver
A Prussian Line Infantry E.M.'s Pickelhaube, with leather skull and peak, brass spike with five ventilation holes, brass spine with sliding ventilation cover, pressed brass helmet plate, brass bound brim, enamelled kokarden, leather chin strap, leather liner, the inner back brim stamped 23.I.R. 11B 7.C II, all struck through. Some cracking to the surface of the leather commensurate with age. Small crease to the left side of the brass rib. Wear to the chin strap. The leather liner is perished.
An Imperial German Fire Official's Dagger, the 33cm double edge steel blade etched with ladders, fire hooks and axes within foliage, the ricasso faintly marked with a visored helmet, the nickel plated hilt with panelled ovoid quillons to the crossguard, wire bound ebony grip and flaming ball and wave pommel, the leather scabbard with nickel plated mounts with twin suspender rings, 47cm. Small patches of black pitting to blade. The plated finish to the hilt and scabbard is very worn. Some rubbing to the leather of the scabbard.
A 17th Century Civil War Harquebusier's Lobster Tail Helmet, the skull made from two pieces joined by a raised comb running from front to back, the hinged forward projecting peak with three bar face protector, pierced cheek protectors with later leather hinges and single neck protector ridged to imitate three lames. Surface with 'orange peel' pitting. Leather hinges are later.
