South African. Uitenhage Rifles Victorian helmet plate circa 1894-1902. Good scarce die-stamped white metal crowned sprays, half of laurel, half of oak, the letters U V R with disc bearing arms. Across the base of the wreath, a UITENHAGE RIFLES scroll. Loops. VGC (Owen 293) Raised 1894; became a company of Prince Alfred’s Guard in 1913. Presented with a King’s Colour for service during the Boer War.
