Lot 705
A fine Japanese Shogun suit of armor, late Edo, 18/19th C. Late Edo period. At the inside the cuirass is dated and signed in red: “eleventh month of Ansei 3 (1856)†and “Yamamoto Jūnoshin†(a person with this name, written with these characters, is known to have taken part in the Boshin War of 1868-1869 between the ruling Tokugawa shogunate and those seeking to return political power to the imperial court). A dark yoroi with traces of gilding with very dark blue cords and a five-piece cuirass with vertical lamella. The suit is topped by a large edoboshi-shaped helmet with a four-piece neck guard. The black facial mask protects the whole face while chin and neck are protected by the gorget. Each shoulder has a 5-lamella guard. The sleeves are armored with Japanese chainmail and five vertical metal strips. The kusazuri (the “skirt†hanging from the cuirass) has horizontal lamella and the cuisses has metal karuta-plates. These retain their gilding as do the metal suneate that protect the lower legs. Offered with its probably original plain wooden store-box for a suit-of-armor. A deed on parchment, bearing the date of the 42d Edward III (1367), granting free warren to John De Warbleton (Sussex), in Latin, with an attached wax royal patent seal, decorated a knight in armour and the king on his throne (a.f.), probably 14th century, with a cut out article from the Guardian Newspaper supplements, January 27th 1849 See illustration Condition report Report by RB Provenance: Inherited by the client by her father. With a green wax seal, incomplete, cracked. The document itself, as you will see from the photographs, is folded, worn, has a few holes, some browning, with a pencil inscription across the top outlining what it is. With accompanying newspaper cutting, inscribed to the reverse in handwriting Manchester-January 27th 1849 Guardian Newspaper Supplement, which starts off: A Curious Old Deed-We had brought to us the other day a curious old deed, bearing the date of the 42d Edward III (1367) and being in fact a grant from that monarch of the priviledge of free warren to John De Warbleton (Sussex). This deed is wholly in Latin, very ledgibly written in the large court-hand of the time and has appended to it, in tollerably good preservation, the royal patent seal, the obverse representing the king on his throne, with a good deal of rich Gothic tabernacle-work, forming a canopy; side canopies overarch heraldic shields & C. On the reverse the effigy of an equestrian king, in armour, with helmet and shield, sword in hand & c. A border of Gothic pendants surrounds this. Both sides are encircled by a legend, of which only a few letters here and there are left, the other portions of the edge of the seal have been broken off. The seal in parts is nearly half an inch in thickness, and is of dark green wax, differing materially from modern sealing wax, for it, contains no resin, and probably consists wholly of bee's-wax and the colouring matter. It is appended to the parchment by two plaited cords of silk, one of green and the other of purple, and these are intertwisted in a thick cord which passes through the substance of the seal, and hangs in a sort of tassle from its foot. The first line of the deed has all the Capilalselongated upwards into balloon-shaped flourishes, and the whole deed is so curious that we offer a translation It then goes on to give the translation and carries on with comment after that.
