A D-section gold hoop with flared shoulders, plate with bifacial plaque insert: obverse with intaglio seal comprising a heater shield with double-tailed rampant lion, helmet with elaborate mantle, mural crown, crest of a double-tailed lion rampant; to the reverse, an earlier signet panel with hatched central panel and surrounding italic legend '*Beware sell with the [Je?]well'. 12 grams, 23mm overall, 21.89mm internal diameter (approximate size British Z, USA 12 1/2, Europe 28.77, Japan 27"). (1"). UK art market, acquired prior to 2000. Supplied with a positive X-Ray Fluorescence metal analysis certificate. The double-queued lion was adopted as a heraldic emblem by many English families. The arms appear, as here, in association with a helmet with mural crown and double-queued lion crest for the Burghershe family in William Berry's Encyclopedia Heraldica published 1828. The reverse of the signet has a hatched central panel, probably cancelling the previously engraved arms. Very fine condition, usage wear.

18th-19th century AD. An Islamic spun-steel domed helmet with apical spike, lateral plume-holders, fixed 'nasal', vandyked curtain of round-section butted mail, fabric lining; the bowl with etched design of robed females and flowers. 744 grams, 50cm including mail (19 3/4"). Private collection, North London; acquired in the early 1990s. Sometimes described as turban helmets these were the most distinctive of the helmets worn by the Muslim warrior. The shape and volume suggests that they were indeed intended to be worn over a thick textile head covering, such as a turban. Fine condition.

There are several shallow dents in the main body of the piece. The handle is securely attached without any visible repairs. The hinge lid is sound. No visible repairs to any joints. Jug: the foot has been pushed up into the main body of the vessel with a visible crease inside. The handle is firmly attached with no visible solder repairs. Overall general wear commensurate with age.
