16th-17th century AD. A D-section gold hoop with flared shoulders, plate with bifacial plaque insert: obverse with intaglio seal comprising a heater shield with double-tailed rampant lion, helmet with elaborate mantle, mural crown, crest of a double-tailed lion rampant; to the reverse, an earlier signet panel with hatched central panel and surrounding italic legend '*Beware sell with the [Je?]well'. 12 grams, 23mm overall, 21.89mm internal diameter (approximate size British Z, USA 12 1/2, Europe 28.77, Japan 27"). (1"). UK art market, acquired prior to 2000. Supplied with a positive X-Ray Fluorescence metal analysis certificate. The double-queued lion was adopted as a heraldic emblem by many English families. The arms appear, as here, in association with a helmet with mural crown and double-queued lion crest for the Burghershe family in William Berry's Encyclopedia Heraldica published 1828. The reverse of the signet has a hatched central panel, probably cancelling the previously engraved arms. Very fine condition, usage wear.

18th-19th century AD. An Islamic spun-steel domed helmet with apical spike, lateral plume-holders, fixed 'nasal', vandyked curtain of round-section butted mail, fabric lining; the bowl with etched design of robed females and flowers. 744 grams, 50cm including mail (19 3/4"). Private collection, North London; acquired in the early 1990s. Sometimes described as turban helmets these were the most distinctive of the helmets worn by the Muslim warrior. The shape and volume suggests that they were indeed intended to be worn over a thick textile head covering, such as a turban. Fine condition.

Rev: VICTORI-A AVGG and officina letter Z with angel standing facing, holding long, P-headed cross and cross on globe; mintmark CONOB in exergue. 4.51 grams. DOC I 5a; Sear 478. Very fine.

A group of cameos, intaglios and beads consisting of: a black glass cameo engraved with the bust of Venus; a seal impression with the bust of Mars wearing a Corinthian helmet; a miniature stone head of Cupid; a brown stone cameo of the bust of the goddess Venus; a black stone intaglio engraved with a tree; a pale green glass intaglio with the figure of Fortuna holding a cornucopia; two pale green glass beads. 66 grams total, 10-17mm (1/4 - 3/4"). 66 AD. Lugdunum mint. Obv: NERO CLAVD CAESAR AVG GER P M TR P IMP P P legend with laureate head right and globe at front of truncation. Rev: Roma seated left on cuirass, foot on helmet, holding Victory and parazonium with shields behind; S - C at sides, ROMA in exergue. 23.51 grams. RIC 268; Sear 1961 variant (bust). Good very fine.
An early 20th century French pressed bronzed metal memorial frame Worked with a female figure, possibly Gallia, in winged helmet holding a frond and a wreath and inscribed 1914, 1915 a Nos Heros, framed. 27.5 x 35.5 cm overall. CONDITION REPORTS: Generally in good condition, expected wear, some rubbing to patination, slightly misshapen, aperture verso lacking.

A substantial silver hoop with expanding shoulders and flat plaque, inset carnelian panel with intaglio image of Mars standing with spear and helmet. 11 grams, 26mm overall, 11.58 x 14.94mm internal diameter (approximate size British D 1/2, USA 2, Europe 1.78, Japan 1"). A seal matrix comprising a hexagonal-section wood handle, bronze discoid plate with intaglio motif of a shield supported by rampant horses and surmounted by a facing helmet with lion rampant(?"). crest, inscribed 'FA' in copperplate script; supplied with an impression of the seal. 25 grams, 51mm (2"). From an old Hampshire collection; found on the River Thames foreshore, Bankside, London, UK, in 1987, recorded with the Museum of London. Fine condition. [No Reserve]

A Victorian silver oval teapot, crested and monogrammed, with engraved star decoration, 13.5 cm high, and a matching helmet shaped jug, 16.5 cm high, Edward and John Barnard, London 1866, approx. 27.0 ozt (all in) (2) See illustration Condition report Report by MW The teapot has good visible marks on the bottom and corresponding marks on the lid. There are several shallow dents in the main body of the piece. The handle is securely attached without any visible repairs. The hinge lid is sound. No visible repairs to any joints. Jug: the foot has been pushed up into the main body of the vessel with a visible crease inside. The handle is firmly attached with no visible solder repairs. Overall general wear commensurate with age.
