Full-leg defense, with sabbatons that resume the drawing of the other parts, one featuring a mark already present on the breast-plate. Wings of knee-cops with twisted borders. The armour (circa 172 cm height) is finely carved as antique specimens, in the so called "Maximillian style": plates with longitudinal fullers, that define the outlined raisers, plates with festooned borders. Complete with leather strings, all the rivets in iron. Presented on a specific wooden mannequin complete with high pedestal. Provenances:- Kuppelmayr Collection, Germany.- Karsten Klingbeil Collection, Berlin. This remarkable armour, made in the 19th century taking up the much loved Maximilian style, originally comes from the very prestigious Kuppelmayr collection, is in fact documented, described and photographed, in the relative volume "Waffen-Sammlung Kuppelmayr" (No. 4, plate 2. 13), referred to as "Ganz canelirter Maximilianharnisch". The description also shows the stamp of the helmet and that of the breast-plate. As can be seen from the photos on the volume of the Kuppelmayr collection, apparently, over time, minimal changes have been made to the armor: some rivets have been added or repaired and the rest has been replaced with a more elaborate one, despite this, the armour is undoubtedly the same, in fact, you can see in the photos the same proportions, the same marks and above all the same signs of aging on the metals. Also unmistakable is the counter-visor plate mounted on the beaver of the helmet, visible in the relative photographic detail, in the same volume. A fascinating armour that has a very high working quality like the 16th-century specimens, made by a true master armourer.

Italian School, early 18th century: A carved marble bust of Marspossibly attributable to Giovanni Baratta (1670-1747)looking slightly to dexter, the moustachioed god wearing a helmet with grotesque mask head and plume, his shoulders clad in drapery, his right shoulder with lions mask, raised on rectangular waisted socle, the bust 93.5cm high, together with a modern marble column plinth 97.5cm high 191cm overall. (2)Footnotes:ProvenanceFormerly the property of the Duke of Aveyro, thence by descentEl Retiro, Churriana, Málaga SpainGiven that the present lot has a near provenance similar to bust of Venus, lot 87, with the exception that the bust of Mars is always thought to have been displayed in the house in the staircase hall and not the garden, it is plausible that this bust may also be attributable to the hand of Giovanni Baratta (Italian, 1670-1747) and may have come to the villa as a pair, via the source of the previous lot. In addition the subject of Mars used in a pair of relief carved medallion plaques of Minerva and Mars which he created together with a group of sculpture and architectural elements for the Royal Palace of La Granja de San ildefonso in Segovia, Spain. Related LiteratureEl Retiro, Inventario, 6th May 1966, Listed on the main Staircase, No. 92 'A Warrior in a cuirass and helmet as well as a mask on his shoulder' which is presumably the bust of Mars. Please see footnote on lot 87 for additional information on this lot. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue.
