AN AMERICAN SOCIETY SWORD & SCABBARD. Having a gilt knights helmet pommel, with white ivorine grip decorated with masonic devices. The blade etched with knights and inset sloping crosses, skull and crossbones, etc. The blade marked The McLilley & Co , Columbus Ohio being 27.3/4" in length. The gilt decorated scabbard and croosguard inset with enamel sloping crosses. The legend 'Be Though Faithful unto Death and I will Give Thee a Crown of Life. The Knights of Ohio C 1900, in very clean condition with some loss of the enamel in places.

A RARE CHINESE POLYCHROME ENAMELLED HELMET-SHAPED EWER FOR THE PORTUGUESE MARKET C.1740 Brightly decorated with flowers and leaves amidst elaborate scrolls above broad yellow petals, the design divided by a geometric band, with red, turquoise and yellow borders encircling the rim, the handle and foot painted with trails of foliage, 27cm. The ewer comes from one of three services made for Dom Jos? Ribeiro da Fonseca Figueiredo (1690-1752), who was appointed as the Bishop of Porto in 1739 under the name of Dom Frei Jos? Maria da Fonseca e Evora. Cf. A LARGE CHINESE POLYCHROME WOOD FIGURE OF WEITUO 17TH CENTURY The guardian depicted seated upon a semi-circular base clad in armour, his breastplate decorated with a taotie mask, with his right hand raised in karana mudra and his left hand resting on his lap, his detachable helmet decorated with a large plume of feathers and two dragons contesting a flaming jewel between a pair of phoenix, the surface with traces of gilt, black and red pigment, 100.5cm. (2) Weituo, known in Sanskrit as Skanda, is a bodhisattva and guardian of monasteries who protects Buddhist teachings. Bruce Bairnsfather, 'Old Bill' Mascot. Old Bill's head, complete with muffler and a signature inscribed around the helmet. Bairnsfather (1888-1959) invented the character of 'Old Bill' at the launch of the 'Bystander' magazine in 1915. He had been a pre-war regular in the British Army but left to train as an artist but was recalled in 1914 and served with the 1st Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment until diagnosed with shell shock in 1915. After which the 'Bystander' commissioned him to draw illustrations which were eventually collected in the six-volume 'Fragments from France'. The mascot helped to capture the mood of the British Army during and after WWI. 4½-inches high, not display-mounted
