A JAPANESE COMPOSITE ARMOUR, GUSOKU EDO PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY The helmet made up of eighteen plates, suji bachi kabuto, with the pierced circular finial (tehen kanamono) and stylised antlers (kuwagata) in gilt, the frontal decoration (maedate) shaped as a quatrelobed mon, the menpo mask with hair moustache and a three-tiered throat guard (yodarekake), the chest armour (do) made up of horizontal plates riveted together, with shoulder and shin guards, the surface lacquered in black and with dark blue lacing, together with a modern storage box and stand, yoroi kake. A JAPANESE SUJIBACHI KABUTO HELMET BY HARUTA KATSUSADA EDO PERIOD, 17TH CENTURY The helmet made up of sixty-two plates and the iron mabisashi fitted with five rivets shaped as flowerheads and a twisted band to the edge; the tehen kanamono made up of five rings of mixed metals; the iron Hineno jikoro of kiritsuke kozane; lacquered in black and laced in blue kebiki odoshi, the fukigaeshi in russet iron with a twisted rope edge and gilt suhama crests; signed Haruta Katsusada saku; the 19th century associated maedate shaped as a silvered moon disc; with Tokubetsu Kicho Shiryo (Especially Precious Reference Piece) certificate no.1547 issued by the Nihon Katchu Bugu Kenkyu Honzonkai (The Society for the Study and Preservation of Japanese Armour), dated 21st November 2010, together with a wood stand, 35cm. The best Haruta School helmets were made as diplomatic gifts. Haruta Katsusada was a famous armour-maker of the Edo period (18th century) ranked jojo who made elegant helmets in Saotome style.

A LARGE CHINESE LACQUERED AND GILT-BRONZE FIGURE OF SKANDA MING DYNASTY The figure stands with his feet apart and his hands held before him, wearing an elaborate helmet and suit of armour, with a celestial scarf flowing around his body, decorated all over in red lacquer heightened with gilt, all raised on a lacquered wood stand formed as craggy rocks, the figure 41.3cm, 7kg. The illustrations on our website show the spotting to the obverse and revers but there is also a very faint line to George’s cheek and some very light wear to the finish to St George’s helmet and sash. Both of these faults are very minor.’
