An officer’s helmet, 1843-49, of Prince Albert’s Own Corps of Norfolk Yeomanry, black painted steel skull, front and rear peaks, and crest, gilt brass mounts, including peak binding, lower band inscribed “Prince Albert’s Own Corps” in the front, embossed rayed helmet plate bearing crowned Royal Arms with motto and supporters, lion head ear bosses and leather backed chinchain, oak and acanthus leaf spray to left side of skull and plain scallop edging to crest, falling black hair plume to right, leather lining. Good Condition, retaining much original gilt (some service wear overall). Plate 18

†An officer’s 1828 pattern helmet of the South Salopian Yeomanry, silver plated skull and comb, gilt binding to front and rear peaks, acanthus leaf side ornaments, leather backed chinscales, with lion’s head ear bosses, wavy edged border to tall comb, lion finial and rayed helmet plate bearing crowned 1816-37 Royal Arms and supporters on Prince of Wales’s feathers, a small oval plate at the base of the comb marked “SSY”, leather lining (incomplete); together with a copy of Carman “Headdresses of the British Army: Yeomanry” 1970. Good Condition, retaining much original gilt (shallow dents to sides of comb). Plate 18
A rare 17th century “Spider” helmet, the crown formed from 10 radiating bars secured by 2 bands and with a peak at the front, the folding “legs” hinged at the base of the radiating bars, the lower band and peak pierced for attachment of the lining. Good Condition for age retaining clip missing to crown. (patinated rust overall) Note: A similar Spider helmet (with parts missing) was sold in the Hann Collection in Pennsylvania in 1980 Plate 48

†A pair of well detailed watercolour paintings of French Third Empire Cavalry by the famous French military artist Edouard Detaille, one showing a mounted Chasseur à Cheval in full dress with helmet, and equipment including carbine, the other showing a dismounted Hussar in service dress with kepi, sword and slung carbine, standing beside his horse, the first signed “Edouard Detaille 89”, each 15” x 12½”, well mounted and framed in gilt, 23” x 20” overall. An early 17th century gorget, probably German, shield shaped with roped edges and similar borders decorated with staggered rows of domed brass rivets, the neck with single row of larger rivets, etched overall with heraldic shield surmounted by a crest in the form of a barred helmet, and with two storks for supporters, the whole surrounded by scrolled foliage on a beaded background. Good Condition (the etching slightly worn commensurate with age). Plate 47
A Third Reich souvenir photograph album, the cover embossed in silver with eagle and swastika and “7. Battr. - Art. - Rgt. 16”, the title page reads “Erinnerung an meine Wehrdienstzeit”, the first four pages with sepia photographs of military leaders, but not Hitler, the rest containing 37 official and privately taken photographs of army life, groups, equipment, etc, and another similar album, the cover with superimposed steel helmet, coloured Kriegsflagge, and “14. (P.A.) Kompanie / Infanterie - Regiment 65/ Delmenorst”, in new unused condition.
An early 17th century English pikeman officer’s pot helmet, formed in two halves with low slightly pointed comb and broad brim with sunken edge, the base of the skull and the brim having rows of domed brass rivets (originally gilt), the former with incised lines around the base, and the remains of a gilt plume holder. Good Condition (slight damage to a section of the brim). Plate 46
A Cromwellian triple bar “lobster tail” helmet, the skull in two halves with low medial rib and engraved with single line; the hinged peak also with single engraved line and triple bar guard; the lobster tail formed from two lames with imitation intermediate lames; with pierced ear flaps. A composite suit of light field armour in the mid 16th century Italian style, comprising close helmet with hinged visor, breast and back plates, gorget, vambraces, pauldrons and gauntlets, and knee length tassets, all etched with bands of scrolled foliate decoration; the breastplate also etched with praying figure and crucifix, the pauldrons with roped edges and etched with unicorns and stylised mythical bird, the breastplate of thin construction with roped edges, the backplate of more substantial construction with plain edges, the rear skirt with roped lower edge. Basically GC (some parts worn through and patched, particularly the breastplate, elbow cops and edges of the tassets, most fingers missing from the gauntlets, some parts, including the helmet, good old replacements), mounted on a wooden stand with rectangular plinth. Good Condition the mounts retaining traces of gilt. Plate 12
