Lancers Victorian OR's Foreign Service helmet plate circa 1881-1901. A good die-stamped brass example. Garter star, the Garter placed on crossed lances voided centre bearing crown on the intersection of the lances. Two loops to reverse. VGC (KK 1126)

Lot 580

Scottish Royal Midlothian Yeomanry Cavalry Victorian Officer's Helmet. A good and rare example of the pattern adopted by the regiment around 1860. Black patent leather skull, peak and neck peak. To the crown of the helmet a silver plated cross piece this supports a black horse hair plume. Two silvered lion head bosses support a leather backed interlinked gilt chin chain. To the front a helmet plate comprising: a large silvered thistle wreath surmounted by a Victorian Crown; within the wreath, an applied gilt Garter, enclosing the Star of the Order of the Thistle in gilt. Below the Garter, among thistle sprays, four gilt scrolls inscribed "Royal, Midlothian, Yeomanry, Cavalry". The interior retains the original leather sweatband with ink name "James Forman". Remains in good condition.

Queen's Own Glasgow Yeomanry Victorian 1847 pattern helmet. A magnificent and scarce post 1901 example of the 1847 (Albert) pattern worn by the regiment from 1848. Silvered skull decorated with gilt floral leaf design. The helmet plate comprises a wreath of Scottish thistles; within the wreath scrolling shield decoration surmounted by a King's Crown. A Thistle star is mounted with a gilt metal strap inscribed "Nemo Me Impune Lacesset". Within the strap to the centre a rampant lion. Rose head bosses support a gilt chin chain with leather backing. The plume holder of leaf design supports a black flowing cockerel feather plume with a gilt rose head boss. The interior retains the leather band, but the silk lining is absent. The helmet remains in superb condition, gilt bright,

Imperial Russian Czar's Horse Guard Officer's helmet. A magnificent and rare example. Gilt Tombac skull surmounted by splendid gilt metal double-headed ornate Imperial eagle with shield of St. George on its breast, the wings are finely crafted with detail of the feathers; secured by gilt domed studs which terminate internally in screw posts with hooped nuts. The lobster tail has three mock scales and decorated with silvered rivet heads, the silvered decoration is repeated to the edge of the helmet. Gilt metal bosses support National cockade and gilded chin scales. To the front a helmet plate comprising an eight pointed silvered star, with Cyrillic motto on rich blue translucent enamel ground. The central black enamelled eagle bears blue enamel St. Andrew's Cross. The front peak and rear lobster tail are lined with brown velvet. Wide soft leather adjustable sweatband, grey silk lining correctly parted along the centre. Minor service and age wear.  VGC

Fife Light Horse Victorian Officer's Helmet. A very fine example 1871 Pattern in white metal. Silvered edging and fittings, including plume-socket and crosspiece base. Laurel wreath above the front peak, incorporating a scroll with motto ‘Pro Aris et Focis' and initials ‘FLH' in gilt. Thistle Star, surmounted by Victorian crown, the saltire arms in gilt, mounted with the Thane of Fife figure in white metal. Plain burnished white metal chinchain. Eight-tongue lining of roan leather. Fitted with a white horsehair plume with gilt rose finial and half-ball socket. Chinchain backing restored otherwise VGC

East Kent Regiment 1878 pattern Officer's Home Service Helmet. A good post 1901 example of the Home Service blue cloth helmet complete with gilt metal cross piece, spike and rose bosses which support the velvet backed chin chain. To the front, a regimental pattern helmet plate, to the centre silver regimental dragon to centre set on a black velvet ground and also an applied silver tri-part scroll inscribed "The East Kent Regiment". The interior retains crimson silk topped, leather sweatband. Gilt badge and furniture dulled and matching. GC

3rd Battalion South Wales Borders Attributed Victorian 1878 pattern Officer's Home Service Helmet circa 1881-1901.. A good example attributed to Major Harry Hickman Bromfield DSO, who was Killed in Action 1916 with the Welsh Guards. Blue cloth helmet complete with gilt metal cross piece, spike and rose bosses which support the velvet backed chin chain. To the front, a regimental pattern helmet plate, with an applied silver tri-part scroll inscribed "The South Wales Borderers". The interior retains crimson silk topped, leather sweatband and tailor's paper label of Cater & Co. Also to the lining a paper label "Capt Bromfield 3rd S.W.B." The helmet retains a good shape, minor age wear GC. Major Harry Hickman Bromfield was born in 1869 and was commissioned into the 3rd Militia Bn of the South Wales Borderers. He served with the Regiment in South Africa and was awarded the DSO and Mentioned in Despatches on two occasions. After the South African War he was appointed Chief Constable of Radnorshire and on creation of the Welsh Guards was commissioned into the 1st Battalion, He landed in France during August 1916 and was killed in action on the 10 September 1916. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.

A good example with staghorn grip mounted with Association's silvered swastika / stag's head emblem, silver plated oakleaf decorated pommel with acorn finial, deer's feet crossguard and clamshell guard / langet. The flat 33 cm blade is etched both sides with hunting scenes and bears maker's knight's helmet logo. Housed in its black leather scabbard with silvered mounts, the top mount with acorn frog stud. Miner service wear. VGC
