A VERY RARE ANTIQUE EROTIC SET, MEIJIJapan, early 20th century, Meiji period (1868-1912)These sex toys, carved from multi-hued horn, known as "laughter devices," were made for practical use. Comprising one hollow dildo, which could have cotton wadding soaked in hot water placed inside it, the hot water making the dildo soft and warm. A striking toy called ´armor and helmet' (Dōkyō no yoroi-kabuto), this was worn on the penis to give it a ribbed texture, the 'armor' was worn on the shaft of the penis and the 'helmet' over the glans. In this set we can see two kinds: in one, the armor and helmets are separate; in the other, they form a single piece. There are also four examples of rings to be worn around the penis, one made from lacquered wood, two finger dildos and six metal balls. In a wooden storage box.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, one ´armor´ with a short crack, one helmet with a chip, the lacquered ring with flakes to the lacquer. IMAMURA KOSO: A SCROLL PAINTING OF A SUIT OF ARMORBy Imamura Koso (1873-1918), signed KosoJapan, Meiji period (1868-1912)Ink, gouache, and watercolors on silk, with an embroidered fabric coated paper frame, showing several mon crests in gilt thread, and mounted as a hanging scroll with porcelain handles with gold gridded decoration. Depicting a samurai armor displayed upon a wood storage box, the armor including a kabuto (helmet), and a somen (full face mask). A war fan, and a sword placed in the front. Sealed and signed to the lower right KOSO. In an orginal inscribed wood storage box, signed KOSO HITSU and DAI with Kao. Condition: Very good condition with minimal creases and slight staining. Provenance: Dutch collection. Dimensions: Image size 98.5 x 35.5 cm, size incl. mounting 188 x 52.5 cmImamura Koso (1873-1918) was a Japanese painter born in Kanagawa Prefecture. Brother of the Japanese painter Shiho Imamura. He studied under Nakajima Tohsai and later moved to Tokyo and studied at Matsumoto Fuko's Angado painting school, where he studied the Yosai school and excelled especially in portraiture. He was a member of the Tatsumi Gakkai and was selected for the Bunten Exhibition and the National Industrial Exhibition.
AN IRON KABUTO AND MENPOJapan, Edo period (1615-1868)The fourteen-plate bowl with a large five-tiered tehen kanamono of chrysanthemum form, the lowest tier of a lobed star shape, the central plates with rivets incorporated into an applied and neatly incised arrow design, the front plate with three rivets and the back plate with two, the helmet further with a mabizashi with patterned textile and metal fittings, large square fukigaeshi, and a plain two-lame shikoro with blue silk lacing. The menpo with a removable nose plate above the applied mustache and three-lame yodarekake with silk lacing and finely chased gilt-metal openwork fittings in the form of kiku-flowerheads amid scrolling vines.HEIGHT 27 cm (the helmet incl. shikoro) and 28 cm (the menpo incl. yodarekake)Condition: Very good condition with minor surface wear, minor chips, few minor losses, small dents.

AN IRON KABUTO WITH KUWAGATA MAEDATE, EDOJapan, Edo period (1615-1868) A sixteen-plate iron sujibachi kabuto (ridged helmet) with a five-tiered chrysanthemum-form tehen kanamono, the brown lacquered mabizashi decorated with an ornamental motif and inset with chrysanthemums, the fukigaeshi similarly decorated and each with a brass clan mon fitting, the four-lame shikoro lacquered brown and with green lacing, mounted with a moon meadate within a pair of connected kuwagata finely incised with leafy scroll.
