Lot 95

Prussian Battlefield Pick-Up Pickelhaube, an all leather enlisted ranks pickelhaube in chemically finished grey, all fittings complete with the exception of the national and state cockades and front strap. The inner liner is all complete with the remains of its original drawstring. Army corp marked within the liner ‘B.A.VII’ (Army Corp 7) with clear date 1915.Attached to the helmet is a very old label, the first three lines read in faded ink ‘German helmet (1st attack on Bullecourt) taken from a dead German. Note, no brass used on helmet (metal shortage). As seen on pages 170 and 171 of Feldzug 17.

Prussian Infantry Regiment 92 (Brunswick) Enlisted Ranks Pickelhaube, a helmet photographed and described on four pages of Feldzug 14, pages 40, 41, 42 and 43. This rare helmet is basically in excellent condition, all fittings match in colour. The front plate is the correct plate for the Brunswick Infantry Regiment 92 with the ‘Fuerst’ scroll at the base of the neck of the Prussian eagle. Complete with both its national and correct Brunswick blue and gold cockade. The interior all complete with its leather drawstring. Beautifully marked to the inner back peak with J.R. 92 plus two separate dates. It is unknown as to when the running horse of Hanover or the skull and crossbones would have been removed, this is discussed at great length in Michael Baldwin’s Feldzug 14 description. The images in the work make it appear that the chinstrap is fully fitted to the helmet, in fact this was dressed for the occasion, the original chinstrap is complete with the helmet but is broken at both attachment points.

Prussian Garde Enlisted Mans Ersatz Felt Pickelhaube Helmet, a most magnificent condition large size skull all felt ersatz helmet issued to a Guard Regiment. All brass fittings, which include the non removable spike and circular spike base, huge size Guard front plate with nickel overlay. The skull itself is totally undamaged and virtually unmarked, complete with its national and state cockades, original black leather chinstrap, all brass fittings, complete with its light brown inner leather liner with all tongues complete, leather supple, even the leather used as wedges to hold the Guard front plate to the body matches the colour of the leather inner liner.

Prussian Enlisted Mans Pickelhaube, an absolutely superb condition very large size (58) Prussian enlisted ranks leather pickelhaube. The body is superb, all peaks strong, all of the fittings toned brass with a slightly brighter Prussian front plate. The front strap is absolutely mint, complete with its national and state cockades, unusually the national cockade is of the non serrated variation normally found on a Saxon and sometimes Wurttemberg helmets but very rarely on Prussian helmets. The helmet has been constructed again with the japanned black plate that normally sits on the inner side of the skull, it has been assembled underneath the circular spike base to the exterior of the skull. The inner liner all complete near mint with its mint drawstring. Ink stamped to the interior ‘58’, clear date ‘1915’ with Berlin manufacturer’s stamp. Army corp marked to the interior of the rear peak ‘B.A.IV.’ (Army Corp 4). The condition of this helmet would be very difficult to surpass.

Prussian Fur Felt Bodied Cloth Covered Enlisted Mans Pickelhaube, a super rare finish and construction for a Prussian ersatz helmet being a basic fur felt body covered with cloth then painted over. The complete helmet is painted in field grey over the afore-mentioned construction. As can be seen from the images there is much flaking of the field grey paint, which gives this helmet great character. All brass matching fittings. Cloth reinforced rear peaks and sides, with its original chinstrap, national and state cockades. The inner highly unusual field grey green substitute ersatz liner is all intact with a long shoelace drawstring. One slight crack to the rear peak. A label attached to the inner rear peak with what appears to be the numbers ‘97’ attached, this may be an old collectors numbering system. One leather wedge holding the front plate to the helmet missing otherwise a superb combat style helmet. Fully illustrated and described on pages 156 and 157 of Feldzug 14.

Prussian Enlisted Mans Pickelhaube with Field Cover, a good large size, possibly 57 or 58 all leather pickelhaube with brass fittings as issued to an enlisted man in Infantry Regiment 95. Good helmet shell with slight crazing and slight sinking to the crown area, complete with Prussian front plate, its original strap, national and state cockades, interior liner all complete and supple with its original leather drawstring, beautifully marked with rubber ink stamp to the inner rear peak to Infantry Regiment 95, this was the 6th Thuringen Infantry Regiment. Fully photographed and described on pages 138 and 139 of Feldzug 15.

Baden Officers Pickelhaube with Numbered Field Cover, a lovely condition all leather pickelhaube, leather skull superb, both front and back peaks without congealing and firmly fitted to the helmet, good gilt overall, flat chin scales. The national cockade is of the standard officers style, the Baden cockade is of the red and gold non serrated pattern. Complete with its officers field cover, which has the numbers ‘112’ to the outside and after turning the cover inside out a red band fits the full circumference of the helmet cover indicating for use on manoeuvres. The interior liner with good bright colour having its very light cream bordering on pink inner silk present. As shown on pages 6,7, 8 and 9 of Feldzug 14.

Saxon Infantry Enlisted Mans Pickelhaube, a beautiful condition all leather skull pickelhaube with the skull manufactured from five segments of leather and that is why it is known amongst collectors as the football helmet. The skull is excellent, complete with its leather front and back peaks, all brass fittings overall, Saxon front plate, a highly unusual double thickness leather chinstrap with brass fittings. The helmet is fitted with both its national and state cockades in the non serrated style. Inner leather lining all complete and supple with all tongues intact with its leather drawstring. The interior of the bowl is lined in canvas. The inner lining is stamped size ‘57’. As shown on page 114 of Feldzug 14.

Prussian Felt Enlisted Mans Garde (Guard) Pickelhaube, an excellent condition all felt bodied ersatz helmet issued to an enlisted man in a Garde Regiment. All of the fittings match in chemically coloured field grey green. The helmet is complete with both its national and state cockades. The original chinstrap still in the hanging position as the helmet was souvenired. The inner leather lining all complete with the tip of one tongue only damaged, with its original brown leather drawstring. As shown on pages 190 and 191 of Feldzug 15, where Michael Baldwin explains the existence of two extra holes to the skull much too low in the front of the body to be of use for fitting any other states helmet plate. Reading of his description is advised. In our opinion this helmet has never been anything else than a Guard helmet.

Baden Reserve Regiment 111 Enlisted Mans Pickelhaube with Field Cover, a good all leather pickelhaube, non-size marked, good leather skull with minor creasing and distortion. All field grey fittings, large Baden front griffin plate, national and Baden State cockades fitted. Maker marked underneath the inner liner, which the tongues are all complete with the remains of the original drawstring present. The cover and the helmet are name matched, the original owner’s name in full has been applied to the inner front peak and has been abbreviated to the inner skull of the helmet and is also applied to the inner section of the cover, which has its stencilled ‘R111’ applied. As fully photographed and described on pages 130, 131, 132 and 133 of Feldzug 15.

Prussian Fur Felt Cloth Covered Enlisted Mans Pickelhaube, a beautiful example huge size, possibly 58 or 59 of the fur felt bodied cloth covered pickelhaube, photographed and explained on pages 152, 153 of Feldzug 14. All of the fittings in brass, which are bright, correct and original chinstrap fitted with both its national and state cockades. The complete edge of the helmet is trimmed in field grey green leather. The interior leather liner all complete, drawstring missing. A superb example.

Saxon Regiment 101 Enlisted Mans Pickelhaube, a very unusual pickelhaube being constructed in the football style and issued to an enlisted man in Saxon Infantry Regiment 101. Profusely illustrated and described on pages 166 and 167 of Feldzug 15. The leather body has never had a Saxon plate fitted and no other holes have been pierced to the skull, it is at present without a spike on the chemically coloured circular spike base with matching back strap, we may never know whether a chemically grey removable spike was ever fitted or whether it was used without a spike. Both peaks, which are leather and cloth covered, have been machine stitched to the body, with its original chinstrap, the national cockade being of the serrated style, the Saxon cockade being of the non serrated Saxon style. To the interior very little of the leather liner remains, only two tongues and other parts of the liner body, the liner was originally produced in a field grey green leather, the inner body is canvas lined as the other football style helmet illustrated in this catalogue, marked ‘101.R’ to the rear inner peak, in this catalogue and on line. Reading of Michael Baldwin’s description in the afore-mentioned book is advised where he explains in great detail the theory of lack of front helmet plates.

Wurttemberg Infantry Officers Helmet, an extremely good large size all leather bodied Wurttemberg Infantry officers helmet. The beautiful gilt toned to exactly the same hue as the other officers helmets within this collection. The national cockade is of the standard form with serrated edge, the Wurttemberg cockade being of the Saxon/Wurttemberg non serrated style. Square cut front peak. The interior leather sweatband with good light tan colour showing minimal wear use with its inner silk fitted. As shown on page 70 of Feldzug 14.

Prussian Train Battalion Enlisted Mans Pickelhaube, first of a pair. A beautiful virtually mint unworn condition upper medium size 57 enlisted ranks pickelhaube for a member of Train Battalion No.8. This helmet was one of a pair of helmets souvenired by an American engineer officer in WWI, the pair are heavily featured on pages 60 and 61 of Feldzug 14. We are offering these helmets separately, this first example, as described, in beautiful condition, slight distortion to the rear peak, all of the fittings in brass, untouched national and state cockades and chinstrap. The interior leather liner all complete and profusely marked on the back peak ‘2.K.’ within a rectangle, followed by ‘T.B.8’ (Train Battalion 8) with clear date ‘1913’ followed by an army corp marking of ‘B.A.VIII’ (army corp 8 1913).

Prussian Train Battalion Enlisted Mans Pickelhaube, second of the pair. This is the second helmet as shown on pages 60 and 61 of Feldzug 14 of a pair of helmets souvenired by an American engineer officer in WWI. Absolutely superb example, huge size, marked size ‘58’, all matching brass fittings, untouched chinstrap and national and state cockades. The inner leather liner all complete with its original drawstring. Marked more profusely than the previous helmet offered with ‘4E’ to the interior front peak, ‘1913’ dated to the upper inner skull, the rear back peak marked ‘II’ followed by ‘4.K.’ within a rectangle, a further large ‘1913’ date, to the opposite peak marked ‘T.B.A.’ (Train Battalion 8) with further army corp smaller marking on ‘B.A.VIII’ (army corp 8 1913).

Saxon Reserve Infantry Regiment Enlisted Mans Pickelhaube and Trench Cover, a lovely untouched set being an all leather pickelhaube of a Saxon soldier. All brass fittings, the front plate having the Reserve Cross fitted between the large star and front overlay plate. The helmet is complete with both national and state cockades in the non serrated style. The interior leather liner all complete with a lovely untouched feel with its original drawstring. The chinstrap is still in the hanging position as souvenired. The cover with the green wartime numbers of ‘R242’, the rear inner back peak is stamped ‘B.A.XII’ indicating army corp 12 with the date ‘06’ at the end of the army group number. Other unidentified ink stampings. The cover with the original owner’s name tag ‘Soldat Helmert Recruiting Depot 1, 13th Infantry Regiment 178’. The ink stamps would be for Brigade Reserve Battalion No.45. Full illustrated and described on pages 134 and 135 of Feldzug 14. It is obvious that this soldier originally served in the 13th Saxon Infantry Regiment and was moved to Reserve Regiment 242.

Saxon M.15 Enlisted Mans Shako, a scarce helmet being an excellent condition Saxon enlisted mans shako. The felt covering to the body is without any moth damage, complete with its field grey Saxon front plate with bugle horn base indicating Jager unit, its correct leather chinstrap with field grey fittings, the small size national and state cockades. To the interior the mid tan leather sweatband all complete and undamaged, marked ’55.5’ to the upper inner crown in size and heavily army corp marked ‘B.A.XII’( army corps 12 ) with following date of ‘16’. Fully described and illustrated on pages 132 and 133 of Feldzug 16.

Prussian Enlisted Mans Ersatz Cork Helmet, fully illustrated and described on page 92 of Feldzug 15, this extremely good condition cork bodied helmet covered in canvas ribbed cloth, all of the fittings match in olive drab paint finish with its original chinstrap, untouched national and state cockades. The interior single strip leather liner showing some wear use but all complete, staining to the canvas to the interior.

62nd Oldenburg Field Artillery Regiment Ersatz Enlisted Mans Pickelhaube, a beautiful condition fur felt helmet of good size, perfect body, all of the fittings including the artillery ball top matching, the Prussian front plate with its overlaid Oldenburg coat of arms, brown leather chinstrap, complete with its serrated style national and Oldenburg blue and red cockade. The interior leather liner in mid tan, good and supple, with all of the tongues intact. The rear peak is size marked ‘55’ and also has a capital ‘F’ meaning it was for field service, two very faint rectangular stamps and remains of an original owner’s name.

Bavarian Infantry Enlisted Mans Pickelhaube, a good all leather bodied pickelhaube, stamped to the interior crown size ‘54’ manufacturer’s stamped ‘1916’. Clearly shown on pages 102, 103, 104 and 105 of Feldzug 16. all the field grey fittings match, complete with both its national and Bavarian State cockades. The helmet strap is complete but is broken away on the right hand side as the helmet is viewed, in the photographs in Feldzug 16 the helmet strap has been laid in place for photographic purposes and can be reconstituted for display. The interior has beautiful light tan colour with its original drawstring in place.

Prussian Enlisted Mans Ersatz Pickelhaube, a very rare helmet being the Berlin made all tin helmet worn by an enlisted man in a Prussian Reserve Regiment. The all black japanned body has been over-painted in field grey green, there is one small indentation to the crown, which has cracked the olive drab paint off to reveal the original black. A Reserve Cross has been fitted to the centre of the Prussian front plate. Brown leather chinstrap with all matching painted fittings, complete with its national and state cockades. To the interior the light tan leather liner in beautiful supple condition with a section of German newspaper from 1914 folded in-between the main body and the liner for a snugger fit for the wearer. Stencilled in gold size number ‘57’ and a clear date of ‘1914’ to the upper inner crown, which was never over-painted and is in its original black.

Prussian Field Artillery Regiment 46 Enlisted Mans Battlefield Souvenir Helmet, a superb untouched piece of WWI history being a Prussian enlisted ranks helmet but worn by an NCO of the 4th Battery of Field Artillery 46. The skull is dirty, dusty and crazed overall with all of the fittings dulled to match. The front, all fittings are in brass with the front plate having the extra scroll Peninsular, Waterloo, Gohrde. The front plate still has both of its attachment lugs fitted to the helmet with their original leather wedges, one of the lugs has come adrift from the left hand side of the helmet plate as the plate is viewed and the plate sits on the helmet wedged to the remains of the lug behind, fitted with NCO’s national and state cockades. The chinstrap is all intact but has been twisted and used for its intended use to secure the helmet to the wearer, the leather has been knotted around one of the attachment lugs. To the interior the leather liner is all complete and supple with its original leather drawstring, there is an original linen label for a one year volunteer by the name of ‘Honnen’ to the 4th Battery Field Artillery 46 placed in the skull just behind the front plate, also heavily branded into the leather the lettering ‘F.A.R.46’. Heavily featured on pages 148 and 149 of Feldzug 14. A beautiful untouched piece.

Prussian Foot Artillery Regiment NCO’s Pickelhaube and Field Cover, a very fine condition all leather bodied pickelhaube worn by a Senior NCO is an unnamed Prussian Foot Artillery Regiment. Beautiful quality of good large size, hand inscribed to the interior skull ‘57’, all brass fittings match, complete with its clip over flat chin scales, unusually having officers state and national cockades instead of NCOs indicating a high rank of NCO. The interior in unworn condition shows beautiful quality inner enlisted ranks liner and original drawstring with good colour. A small section of cork has been placed behind the inner liner to make the helmet be a snugger fit for the wearer. The helmet is complete with its original enlisted ranks field cover. Featured on pages 14, 15, 16 and 17 of Feldzug 14

Battlefield Recovered Bavarian Officers Pickelhaube, a highly interesting historical artefact of WWI being a semi crushed and distorted Bavarian officers helmet. All of the Gilded fittings remain to the helmet with the exception of the front peak trim and all have blackened with age, complete with its national and state cockades, half round gilded chin scales, fluted spike, the inner liner is missing. Hand applied to the inside of the body ‘Aug 1919’. A fabulous curio to depict the horrors of trench warfare.

Prussian Field Artillery NCO’s Pickelhaube and Field Cover, a very nice large size all leather pickelhaube worn by an NCO in Field Artillery Regiment No.17, complete with all brass fittings including its artillery style ball top, domed clip over chin scales, complete with its enlisted ranks national and state cockades. To the interior the leather liner is all complete and supple. A linen label has been adhered to the inner skull behind the front plate area, which reads ‘Unteroffizier Nickel, Field Artillery Regiment 17’. To the inner rear peak markings, which include ‘Regiment No.17’ date of ‘1889’ and further issue numbers and letters.  Featured on pages 74 and 75 of Feldzug 14, Michael Baldwin clearly states this as being an earlier helmet being a model 1867 and cut down to be up-dated to be an 1895 model, this was quite a common occurrence for the re-use of helmets. Complete with its field cover, which is shredded around the ball area and at the reverse side. Complete with its enlisted ranks style hooks.

Lot 129

Prussian 10th Field Artillery Regiment Enlisted Mans Pickelhaube, a good upper medium size all leather pickelhaube with excellent strong body, some crazing, for an enlisted man in the 10th Field Artillery Regiment. All the fittings are field grey, complete with its original strap with field grey fittings, both national and state cockades. The interior leather liner all complete, drawstring minus, stamped size ‘55’, profusely stamped to the interior of the body close to the plate attachment lugs ‘F.A.R.10’ and correctly army group marked ‘B.A.X’ (army corp 10) ‘1915’ to the back peak. When the helmet was photographed for Feldzug 15 featured on pages 176 and 177 one leather wedge was missing, this has been replaced for security of the helmet plate.

Lot 131

Ersatz Prussian Enlisted Mans Pickelhaube with its Original Trench Cover, an excellent time warp pickelhaube being an ersatz fibre skulled very large size pickelhaube with the front and back peaks metal riveted to the fibre body, complete with its Prussian front plate, national and State cockades, original front strap, the interior light tan leather liner is absolutely complete with good colour. This is the totally original helmet cover to this helmet. To the rear of the helmet cover and to the front stitch marks and stitches still remain, but now loose, to where the cover was stitched to the inner liner and reciprocal stitches remain in place on the edge of the inner leather liner. As shown on page 91 of Feldzug 14.  A superb piece.

Prussian Jager zu Pferde Enlisted Mans Helmet, a superb helmet stamped size ‘56’ to the edge trim at the rear of the helmet, originally supplied in a blued metal finish, this has been over-painted in a field grey, which has beautifully patinated over the last  103 years, complete with its Jager Zu Pferde style front plate, removable spike, front strap, the smaller sized national and state cockades. To the interior the leather liner is complete with the exception of two tongues, which have broken away. Stamped to the upper inner crown the maker’s name of ‘Otto Nachtigall’ and clearly dated ‘1915’. Some extra cork has been placed to the interior of the leather liner to make sure that the helmet is a tighter and more snugger fit for the wearer. One minor crease to the rear skull. Featured on page 144 of Feldzug 15.

Lot 133

Mecklenburg Officers Shako, a good all leather bodied shako for an officer of Mecklenburg Jager Battalion No.14. Front and back peaks excellent, complete with its large Mecklenburg officers double constructed front plate with flat gilded chin scales, its correct and rare Mecklenburg bullion red, blue and yellow velvet centred field cockade, complete with a national serrated edge cockade fitted to the right hand side of the helmet. Inner leather liner and brown inner silk liner with old collectors label attached to the upper inner crown in German describing the helmet and its history. An original owner’s name hand applied to the inside of the skull.

Prussian Fur Felt Enlisted Mans / NCO’s Ulhan Helmet, in a series of ersatz helmets the Ulhan helmet is probably the rarest in felt, beautiful firm body with its mortarboard, worn by enlisted mans in the 6th Prussian Thuringen Regiment. Silvered front plate, which has toned, complete with its leather chinstrap and field grey fittings, the chinstrap has been left in the hanging position as Michael Baldwin acquired it. Fitted to the right hand side of the helmet is a national NCO’s cockade, the mortarboard top is fitted for the addition of the State field cockade, which is not present and looks as if one was never fitted. The inner leather liner is good and supple with the tips of three tongues missing. The upper inner crown is army corp marked ‘B.A.XVII’ (18th Army Corps).  In-depth description and photographs on pages 70 and 71 of Feldzug 15.

Prussian Enlisted Mans Ersatz Uhlan Helmet with Field Cover, an ultra rare ersatz helmet being a relatively upper medium sized ‘56’ all tin pickelhaube, the main body is superb with all its original finish remaining with its tin non removable mortarboard top, brass Prussian enlisted ranks front plate, original chinstrap with brass fittings, national black, white and red cockades fitted. To the interior the leather liner all complete with its original leather drawstring, some degrading to the leather at the joint of the liner to the main body. Good interior colour to the skull, which appears to be leather lined. Fitted with its field cover and its black and white Prussian field cockade. To the interior of the cover it is marked to the ‘3rd Uhlan Regiment’ with the manufacturer’s mark of ‘Emil Fabian Berlin’ with date ‘1914’.

Prussian Fur Felt Enlisted Ranks Jager Shako, a rare shako for an enlisted man in a Prussian Jager unit, complete with its very light brass Jager shaped front helmet plate, national cockade and black and white Prussian field cockade fitted, with its original chinstrap. Totally original untouched liner and drawstring complete.

Prussian Jager Enlisted Mans Shako & Field Tunic, a fabulous grouping comprising two items to one Jager Battalion enlisted man. Shown in great depth on pages 71, 72, 73 of Feldzug 14. Standard leather enlisted mans shako of good size in superb condition, brass Prussian front plate, correct national cockade, original leather chinstrap, complete with its black and white field cockade. The helmet retains all its original liner and beautifully marked to the interior ‘3.J.B.’ with date ‘1908’ with faint traces of the original manufacturer’s marking below. Complete with its field cover, which has the green applied number of ‘No.9’ size stamped ‘57’ with another indistinct marking to the inner rear of the cover. Accompanied by an excellent example of the Jager green Model 1907/10 Jager feldrock. The nap of the cloth to the feldrock is superb, one minor moth nip, all buttons matching, complete with its 9th Jager Battalion chain stitched epaulettes with a label to the upper inner collar area ‘Jager Andresen 1st Company Jager Battalion 9’. To the interior the bandage pocket still intact. A magnificent tunic and shako.

American Officers Souvenir Grouping, a magnificent grouping of the French made American tunic of Captain F.K.Leavitt with a photograph album of base hospital number 20 at Chatel Guyon, France. Two German pickelhaubes and other souvenirs brought back by Captain Dr. Leavitt. A much fuller description with accompanying photographs are in depth described and illustrated on page 58 to 69 of Feldzug 1918. The grouping is accompanied by a hard copy paper description from the original seller, from whom Michael Baldwin made the purchase in 2005. The two major objects in the group are the two pickelhaubes, the first being a standard all leather Prussian enlisted ranks pickelhaube, all complete minus the chinstrap and national and state cockades, beautifully marked to the interior back peak to the 30th Infantry Regiment and dated ‘1900’ and further dated ‘1912’ complete with liner. A Wurttemberg Reserve officers or 1 Year Volunteer pickelhaube, all complete with the majority of the fittings being of officer quality however with the strap posts indicating that it at one time had a leather chinstrap for an enlisted man. To the right of the stag on the Wurttemberg front plate is a bullet hole through the leather skull which has damaged one of the tongues of the inner liner, which again is virtually all complete and has exited the rear of the skull. To the interior rear peak the helmet is clearly unit marked ‘124R’ date of ‘1906’ with further unidentified markings. In one of the photographs applied to the album pages is a magnificent grouping of all Dr.Leavitt’s war souvenirs arranged in display form, which include both the Prussian and Wurttemberg helmets previously described. Apart from the two helmets there are many other items in the group which are photographed in this catalogue. Landsturm Infantry Pickelhaube Cover, a rare helmet cover for an infantry pickelhaube, complete with its Landwehr cross and numbers ‘45’ in green cloth. Beautifully photographed on pages 110 and 111 of Feldzug 15, also photographed in Michael Baldwin’s first book Field Grey Uniforms of the Imperial German Army.

Infantry Regiment 131 Pickelhaube Helmet Cover, a large size enlisted mans pickelhaube cover with faint traces of ‘131’ in red to the front, attached to the cover is a hand written label by Michael Baldwin ‘131 Regiment hand sewn red numerals removed’. Complete with all of its hooks.

Baden Infantry Regiment 170 Pickelhaube Helmet Cover, a good enlisted mans pickelhaube cover, the red numbers of ‘170’ have been removed however the outline of the red stitching clearly showing ‘170’ are in place. Clearly shown on pages 112 and 113 of Feldzug 14, complete with all hooks.

Lot 144

Prussian Reserve Regiment 56 Pickelhaube Helmet Cover, a well worn enlisted ranks helmet cover with all of its hooks remaining. Slight shredding to the tip of the spike and two holes to the front right hand side of the numbers and one larger to the rear with the remains of stencil numbers of Reserve Regiment 56. Profusely stamped to the interior of the cover ‘J.R.56 IIB’ plus the manufacturer’s name, which is indistinct but a clear date of ‘1913’. An excellent battle worn item. Shown on page 36 of Feldzug 15.

15th Prussian Infantry Regiment Pickelhaube Helmet Cover, an excellent condition enlisted ranks helmet cover with all of its five hooks remaining. Red letters to the front number ‘15’, profusely shown and described on page 36 of Feldzug 14.

Very Rare Paper Cloth Constructed Officers Pickelhaube Helmet Cover, profusely photographed and described on page 15 of Feldzug 17. A company manufacturer’s stamp of ‘Vorn’ to the interior of the front peak of the cover and the remains of lacquer where the helmet cover has lain upon the helmet in heat. A good heavy duty item.

Officers Pickelhaube Cover in White, a snow camouflage or manoeuvre style officers helmet cover all in white, slight service staining, marked ‘DRP’ to one of the inner peaks of the cover. Still with its original paper size label affixed. Shown on page 34 of Feldzug 14.

Artillery Officers Pickelhaube Helmet Cover, a good large size helmet cover in field grey for an officer’s artillery helmet, marked ‘Vorn’ to the inner peak.

Lot 151

Model 1918 Camouflage Trench Helmet, as explained in Feldzug 18, to obtain the camouflage version of the M.1918 helmet is extremely rare. Shell size stamped ‘ET66’. To the exterior subdued block camouflage pattern with black separation lines, liner securing rivets present. To the interior the three section light cream padded liner is present, the tip of one tongue is split, two of the leather sections have their inner horsehair pads complete, one is missing. Clips in place to the M.18 liner for the M.18 strap which is unfortunately missing.

Lot 152

M.16 Trench Helmet, stamped size ‘G62’ to the inner shell, this good M.16 trench helmet retains at least 70% of its original field grey green paint finish. Both of the armoured front plate attachment lugs have been filled with wood, which was a common occurrence. The interior liner is in place on its leather band, the leather has solidified, of the three leather sections two retain their inner pads, the tongue to one of the pads is completely missing and the helmet also retains its original extremely rare chinstrap.

Battle Damaged M.16 Steel Helmet, a ‘66’ size stamped shell, the exterior retaining much of its original field grey green finish with substantial shrapnel damage, as can be viewed. Of the interior liner only three-quarters of the original leather band remains with one of its leather sections remaining with its internal horsehair padded pad. Shown on page 126 of Feldzug 16.

Model 1918 Camouflaged Trench Helmet, featured on pages 146-149  of Feldzug 18, any M.18 camouflage helmet is incredibly difficult to obtain, this example having a good bright variation of colours including ochre, brown, yellow and maroon to the exterior with black separation lines. To the interior the lighter cream three padded liner is all intact to the steel liner band. All of the three inner horsehair pads remain. Clips for the M.18 strap are present but the strap is missing.

Lot 155

1st Foot Guards Camouflage Trench Helmet, being a very good M.17 size 64 shell trench helmet as worn by the 3rd Company of the 1st Foot Guards. The mixture of dark brown and yellow camouflage with light tan separation lines. Foot Guards insignia hand applied to the left hand side of the helmet with large number ‘3’ to the reverse side. To the interior the helmet retains all of its original three pads in mid tan colour. The tips of all six tongues are complete and with its original chinstrap. A rare helmet, as featured on pages 114,115,116 and 117 of Feldzug 18.

Lot 156

Outstanding M.17 Camouflage Trench Helmet, ET64 size shell, camouflaged to the exterior in the green, maroon, ochre and brown camouflage with black separation lines, virtually all of the finish intact. To the interior two of the three pads only remain and both are with their inner horsehair pads, the remains of the third pad is laying within the bowl of the helmet and complete with its original chinstrap. A good manufacturer’s name and date stamp of ‘1916’ is on one of the leather pads. This helmet is on the front cover of Feldzug 1918 and a full description on pages 80 and 83.

M.16 Camouflage Battle Damaged Trench Helmet, a G 68 sized M 16 camouflage trench helmet from Michael Baldwin’s collection that has been heavily photographed on pages 84,86,86,87,88 and 89 of the excellent work ‘ Battle Damage’ 3 colour paint in green ochre and tan retaining virtually all of its paintwork, which has had bullet damage through the front and exiting the side of the shell, retaining all 3 inner liner pads , 1 pad having its original horsehair inner pad intact and another pad with 1 tongue missing, with the remains of its chin strap, owners name hand applied into rear skirt.

Lot 158

Very Rare M.18 Ear Cut Out Helmet with Remains of Camouflage Paint Finish, it is extremely rare to find a camouflage M.18 ear cut out helmet, this example is clearly marked ‘ET64’, as all of the ear cut out helmets are, with the faint remains of its camouflage finish, which has been applied over the rare original flock finish. Both armoured plate attachment lugs have been plugged with wood as quite commonly encountered. To the interior all three of the light cream liner sections remain with all of their tongues. Two have their inner horsehair pads remaining, one is missing and complete with its M.1918 chinstrap pieces, one of which is completely detached from its strap post. The unique carbine clip strap featured only on M.18 helmets has the faint remains of its manufacturer’s stamp and a clear date of ‘1918’. The faint remains of a paper post home label is visible, this is affixed to the inner rear skirt. Featured on pages 142,143,144 and 145 of Feldzug 18.

Lot 159

M.17 Camouflage Trench Helmet, a good ‘TJ66’ stamped shell with the exterior having the standard block camouflage finish with a brighter maroon than normally encountered, green and ochre with black separation lines. Good bright finish remaining to the skull. To the interior all three liner pads are present with their inner horsehair pads, however two of the pads are detached from the steel M.17 liner band. The helmet also has its semi solidified chinstrap remaining but split to the centre.

Lot 160

Camouflage M.17 Steel Helmet Shell, an indistinctly marked helmet which appears to be size 64, the exterior having good camouflage of brown, green and dark yellow with wide black separation lines, a great majority of the finish remaining. To the interior unfortunately the liner and liner band is missing. All lining retaining rivets complete.

Lot 161

M.18 Trench Helmet, a virtually unused condition M.18 trench helmet, rubber ink stamped size ‘62’ to the inner skirt, retaining all of its original field grey finish to the exterior. To the interior the mid tan coloured three section liner is all intact with its inner horsehair pads, some slight degrading of the leather at the point where the leather pads fit over the inner steel liner band but still strong. Complete with its rare M.18 carbine clip strap, which is maker marked and clearly dated ‘1918’ to the leather tab that covers the metallic carbine clip. Also rubber ink stamped ‘AK’ into the rear of the shell and remains of the original drawstring laying in the lower part of the bowl. A very rare helmet in this condition. Featured in Feldzug 18 pages 132,133,134,135,136 and 137.

Battle Damaged Field Dug M.16 Trench Helmet Shell, a much shattered shell by shrapnel, ground dug with evidence of chalk soil to the interior of the shell. Featured in Feldzug 16 page 194. A fine display piece.

Lot 163

M.16 Souvenired Trench Helmet Shell, this is a size 66 M.16 steel helmet shell, which has been captured and souvenir painted, possibly by a British unit, probably displayed in a mess after WWI. The complete interior is missing with the exception of one of the strap retaining clips. Painted to the front is an ace of spades with unfortunately an unidentified unit badge originally painted to the front with the first part of the letters ‘royal’ still visible. The badge is in the shape of a Garter Star.

Lot 164

Armoured Helmet Brow Plate, a very good condition armoured brow plate for fitting to the M.16, 17 and 18 helmet. Maker marked and numbered ‘41’ to the reverse side of the plate, one side only of the long fixing strap still remaining to the brow plate, which retains good original colour. Shown in Feldzug 18 on pages176 and 177.
