Rare helmet in medieval style, Hounskull, Germany 19th century. Hounskull, Hundsgugel (dog hood) is a type of bascinet-type helmet with a cone-shaped visor strongly extended forward. This shape of the visor increased its surface area, which made it possible to provide it with many ventilation holes. The helmet was used by European knighthood in the XIV-XV centuries. length 30 cm.

A silver plated Highlander's dress dirk together with a plaid brooch, the dirk with decorative handle featuring four oval cabochon cut foil backed smoky quartz above a cartouche featuring two hounds, and below four recesses containing alternate soldiers and maidens and a row of coloured foil backed hardstones, the pommel with circular faceted foil backed smoky quartz, steel tapering blade, 32.5cm long with clipped rear edge, decorative scabbard featuring the crest and ribboned motto of CLAN ANDERSON with helmet above, the subsidiary fork and knife similarly designed, verso with simple fitting, overall length 54cm; the base metal brooch of circular form, 10cm diameter, outer pierced section over a plain ground featuring eagles and balls on a foliate field, central raised section similarly decorated, with a circular brown facetted smoky quartz, 4.5cm diameter, verso with simple pin and hook fitting, 10cm diameter (2)Dirk - Overall in fair to good condition with no obvious sign of repair. The scabbard has some loss to the material exposing the wood under the crest and motto area. Some very minor loss of plating to the high exposed areas. Would benefit from being cleaned. The fork, knife and dirk all in good condition with just some staining to the steelwork.Brooch - Overall in good condition with no obvious sign of repair. Some light surface scratches and nicks, as to be expected and commensurate with age and use. Verso missing 6 of the 12 retaining nuts.

A SEAGOING ENTRÉE DISH AND COVER FROM THE SERVICE OF CAPTAIN PHILIP DURHAM, PROBABLY PURCHASED WITH TRAFALGAR PRIZE MONEY, CIRCA 1807marked for Richard Crossley, London, 1807, rectangular with gadroon borders, the domed cover with incurved corners and scroll handle on a splayed leafy calyx, engraved twice with the coat of arms below a knight’s helmet for Admiral Sir Philip Durham (1763-1845), the arms augmented with his Naval Gold Medal for Trafalgar, his neck badge as Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath, and his badge for the Military Merit of France, the base further engraved twice with Durham’s crest of a dolphin, each similarly augmented with his K.C.B. badge -- 11in. (28 cm.) wide; 2419 grams, 77 oz. tr. Captain Philip Durham (1763-1845) commanded H.M.S. Defiance (74) at the Battle of Trafalgar, where he was wounded, and, as Knight of the Bath, carried a chivalric banner at Nelson’s funeral. His badge for the Military Merit of France was awarded for Durham’s role in reducing Guadeloupe for King Louis XVIII in 1815.

comprising Italian morion in the 'Spanish' fashion formed in one piece with a rounded almond-shaped crown rising to a slight 'stalk', and a flat integral brim projecting to an obtuse point front and rear (bent downwards at the front), pierced with a later wiring-hole, its edge formed with a plain inward turn, the base of the crown encircled by fourteen round-headed lining-rivets with copper alloy washers (two washers missing, one incomplete), the surface of the helmet retaining much of a rough from the hammer finish; South German medially-ridged one-piece breastplate of late peascod fashion, flanged outwards at its base, roped inward turn at the neck and arm-openings, engraved with pairs of lines at the arm-openings and a 'V' over the neck-opening, struck with Nuremburg city mark twice and the letter 'N', fitted with single-end iron buckle at each of the shoulders and two at the waist, well-shaped closely matching backplate engraved with pairs of lines at the neck, symmetrical Italian pauldrons of three broad upper lames and five narrower ones beneath them (some disarticulation), two Italian tassets each of nine lames (restorations), one painted 'GP' for Giocco del Ponte on the inside (areas of rust)
