HERBERT JOHNSON CRASH HELMET SUPPLIED BY PATEY (LONDON) LTD. Herbert Johnson were one of the preferred purveyors of bash-hats to racing’s elite up to the early-mid 1960’s era. The company, founded in 1889, made its name for its silk-velvet top-hats. By the outbreak of World War 1 its output was dominated by the demands of the military. Goldie Gardner was the first racer to commission a ‘protective hat’ from then proprietor, Geoffrey Glazier. Stirling Moss was a later customer as demand for the firm’s race products grew. This restored Herbert Johnson crash helmet was purchased in 2008 from renowned supplier Patey (London) Ltd. The helmet is constructed of shellac with cotton webbing and leather/suede side straps. Presented a bespoke carrying case with previous bill of sale, this is a fine piece of racing memorabilia.
