Military items and effects belonging to C/H O'Dell of the Household Cavalry, including two riding crops, the first War Department issue; the second with a silver collar inscribed, 'With Gratitude, Tweedale Troop, 1962; two wooden mounted shield plaques; the first with the horse shoe of 'Keystone', Regimental No 124, an Irish Mare born in 1953, nature said to be 'nervous, centre, willing', Duty, 'Troop Horse, Charger to CH/ O'Dell from Dec '64 to Sept '67', the Hind shoe used on March from Wellington Barracks to Lord Euremont's Estate, Sussex via Aldershot and Back. Sept 1965, Distance 140 miles. The second plaque with O'Dell's helmet plate, a white belt with brass military buckle, inscribed to O'Dell; his red helmet plume contained within canvas lining, a pair of size 9 + 1/2 to 11 shoe trees, pair of horse blinders, a bit and pair of military issue stirrups dated 1967, together with an original black and white photograph of O'Dell in his uniform and a copy of Presentation of the Standards to the Household Cavalry, 28th April 1953.

Three examples of the Plumes and Scroll collar sized badge as worn on the Foreign Service helmet. 1st Volunteer Battalion, The Royal Berkshire Regiment, 5th Volunteer Battalion The Royal Scots, Other Ranks Helmet Plates c1883-1901, both of crowned eight-pointed star format in die-stamped white metal; the first with applied circular mount 'Royal Berkshire 1st Volr. Battn.' enclosing the Stag under the Oak tree. The second with glengarry pattern lugged centre, being the Star of the Order of the Thistle, St. Andrew and title scrolls, '5th Vol Batt' & 'The Royal Scots', both plates with fastening lugs. Good overall condition (2 items)
1st (King's) Dragoon Guards, Officer's Flap Pouch, Pouch Belt & Full Dress Epaulettes 1837-1855, Fine and extremely rare items, the pouch of blue moroccan leather faced with blue velvet, this overlaid with gold train lace enclosing gold lace oak sprays, crowned 'VR' cypher and battle honour scroll 'Waterloo', the scroll with red velvet backing. The inside flap of the pouch bears the trade label of 'Andrews Helmet Maker & C. to His Majesty, 9 Pall Mall'. The pouch belt of red moroccan faced with blue velvet and overlaid with the regimental pattern gold lace, the magnificent gilt metal buckle, slide and tip of distinctive regimental pattern, featuring Royal crowns laurel and acanthus leaf sprays. The tri-angular shaped tip with an inner ground of blue velvet.The epaulettes (worn until 1855) have strap and crescent grounds of blue velvet heavily overlaid with gold lace, the crescents with central raised ovals bearing script initials 'KDG', these in silver bullion lace; small two piece gilt metal finial buttons of regimental pattern. The epaulettes lined with red moroccan, red silk and red velvet. All four pink silk fastening ties are present (one reduced). The lace in good overall condition but requires slight professional cleaning (4 items)
Imperial German Prussian Officers Pickelhaube, brass Prussian helmet plate, scaled chinstraps and officers cockades. Brass spike with four stars to the base. Some crazing to the leather shell. Original leather sweatband to the interior and cloth lining. Some wear to the interior. Some damage to the helmet plate.
Imperial German Fire Fighters Helmet circa 1914, black leather pickelhaube style shell with brass comb to the top, two national cockades and brass fire brigade badge to the front. Interior retains the original leather liner, some wear and small section missing to one tongue. Helmet shows wear but still in generally good condition.
WW1 American 77th Division Steel Helmet, standard pattern rough textured steel helmet with hand painted divisional insignia of the 77th (Statue of Liberty). The helmet is complete with its original oilskin liner system and has its original, although damaged, chinstrap. The helmet remains in generally good condition. The 77th Division was famous for their involvement in the Battle of Argonne Forest in October 1918. Nine companies of the division were given the nickname, “The Lost Battalion” due to their involvement in this action. Roughly 554 men of the division were ordered to advance into the forest on the 2nd October, on the understanding they would be supported by both French and American forces on their flanks, however the men soon became isolated and the German forces surrounded them cutting them off from retreating back. The men were involved with heavy fighting against overwhelming enemy forces. The battalions were soon running out of ammunition, food and water. Due to the location it became almost impossible to get messages through to the higher command, with many runners being killed or captured. Due to command not knowing their position they were subject to a number of Artillery bombardments from their own side. Out of the 554 men who entered the forest, it is believed 197 were killed in action and 150 were missing believed taken Prisoner of War. They were finally relieved when the allies managed to advance on their position on the 8th October. Three Medal of Honours were awarded to the officers of the division.
Selection of WW2 British Steel Helmets consisting of 1940 dated combat helmet with the remains of the original gas cap vail which has corroded to the helmet brim, three combat pattern British helmets complete with liners and chinstraps, Home Front Wardens helmet painted black with white W to the front and a home front issue helmet with drilled holes to the brim. All the helmets are in untouched as found condition, they suffer from various degrees of surface rusting to the exterior shells. (6 items)
Scarce WW2 Home Front Shelter Wardens Steel Helmet, standard WW2 pattern British helmet with thick white overpaint and stencilled in black to the front SW. Helmet is complete with the original liner and webbing chinstrap. Liner system stamped BMB and dated 1939. Helmet remains in very good overall condition with just minor areas of paint loss to the exterior.
WW2 Royal Air Force B-Type Flying Helmet in untouched as found condition. The helmet is complete with the zip ear cups, original leather chinstrap and back straps. Velvet cushioned lining pad to the interior. No label is present and no marks where one has ever been. Leather is dry and dusty with some minor scratches and scuffs. Interior ear cup padding has started to come out on one side.
WW2 British Steel Combat Helmet with Regimental Flashes, standard WW2 British steel helmet with painted blue, yellow and red regimental flash to both sides of the helmet. The helmet is complete with the original liner and webbing chinstrap. Helmet liner is dated 1939. Helmet has been poorly stored so has heavy rusting to the exterior of the shell.
Rare Officers Double Decal Parade Helmet, of Vulcan fibre shell retaining 98% of the original paint finish. Golden Army / Naval and tri-colour decals in very good condition with just slight wear. Original Erel marked leather liner to the interior. The crown of the shell has Erel makers decal. Original brown leather chinstrap. Helmet shows very minimal service wear.
The King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment), Officer's Home Service Helmet Plate c1902-1911, In gilt metal, crowned crowned eight-pointed star with laurel and Garter overlay, in the centre on a ground of crimson velvet a silver Lion passant guardant, a silver scroll below 'Royal Lancaster Regiment', three loop fasteners. Wear to the crimson velvet and one star point finial with a buckle, the gilt very fine.
WW2 Free French Tankers Helmet, retaining much of the original horizon blue paint finish to the exterior and interior. Large leather pad to the front of the helmet. Interesting hand painted French Cross of Loraine to the front. Interior of the helmet has the original leather sweatband and webbing liner system. Interior of the shell has painted makers details and model details. Some light surface rusting to the outside but generally good condition.
Polish Podhale Rifles (Mountain Troops) Dress Cap, being a modern issue with bullion crowned eagle cap insignia with metal edelweiss to the centre. Knotted central braid band with metal edelweiss holding feather plume. Complete with the original sweatband and cloth strap. Accompanied by a communist period Polish army officers peaked cap with bullion insignia, other ranks cloth rogatywka field cap with metal eagle cap badge and a modern issue Polish army steel combat helmet with camouflaged net. All items remain in good overall condition. (4 items)
WW2 German Factory Fire Guards Helmet, standard black painted civilian style fire helmet with chrome top comb and neck flap. To one side of the helmet is a decal in the form of a P with PFAFF. Two holes to the front of the helmet wear a German Fire Brigade badge would have once been present. Helmet shell is a black over paint with the original red paint showing through underneath in places. Complete with the original civilian pattern liner and chinstrap.
Imperial German Bavarian Reserve Officers Pickelhaube Helmet, being leather body with fine officers pattern gilded Bavarian helmet plate with frosted silver reserve cross to the centre. Scaled chinstraps supported by officers national cockade and an unusual state cockade. Gilt metal cross plate with officers stars and removable fluted spike. Helmet is complete with the original leather liner to the interior but missing the silk. Stitching is loose to the front peak and the cross base has made the leather sink but otherwise generally good condition. Complete with an original storage case.
German Army Double Decal Transitional M-16 Steel Helmet, retaining approx 50% of the original apple green paint finish to the exterior of the shell. Helmet retains German army eagle decal to one side and remains of the original tri-colour decal to the other. Helmet has a Third Reich period style eight tongue liner and steel band. The liner shows some wear and has damage in places.
Victorian The Kings Royal Rifle Corps Foreign Service Helmet Plate, being an other ranks example of the blackened Victorian crowned Maltese cross sitting on tablet with battle honours to each arm. Circlet to the centre with regimental details and strung bugle with red cloth backing. Reverse of the plate is fitted with three lug fittings. Plate remains in good condition.
WW2 Fleet Air Arm Naval C-Type Flying Helmet in untouched as found condition. The helmet is complete with the zip ear cups, original 1st type leather chinstrap and goggle attachment straps to the reverse. Interior lining has the forehead velvet padding. Internal ear cup to one side only and this is perishing. Interior shows wear consistent with exterior and service. Leather exterior of the helmet is generally sound with just some light scuffing and dusty.

A post 1902 gilt Gentleman at Arms helmet of Capt E.B. Towse, VC, CBE, KCVO, the skull ornamented overall with scrolled vines, crowned HP bearing R Arms in oval Garter on cut silver plated star, all within oak wreath, velvet backed foliate chinscales, lion’s head ear bosses, acanthus top mount (plume missing), leather and silk lining with owner’s name to peak; with full details of Capt Towse (1864-1948) who was awarded the VC for two actions in the Boer War, in the second of which he lost his sight; he was admitted to the Gentlemen at Arms in 1903 and served with them until 1939. Plus 5 sealed packet items – ‘The Armoury’ Mauser and rifle; ‘Armoury’ Thompson submachine gun and ammo; ‘Quarter Masters Stores’ beret, boots and belt; ‘Rifle Rack’ 4 rifles and a rope gun; And ‘Equipment Centre’- ‘Special Operations Kit’. Also a wooden kit box with assorted items including a flame thrower, radio, headphones, kit bag, coiled copper wire, bullets, binoculars, boots, helmet etc. Plus a 1980 ‘Action Man Annual’ by Stafford Pemberton Publishing.
