A FRENCH HEAVY CAVALRY TROOPER'S FULL DRESS HELMET. The steel skull embellished with brass fittings, a raised decorated crest with Medusa's head front, frontal plate with laurels and a fused grenade, plume holder and all round edge trimming. Original horse hair falling plume flowing backwards from the top of the crest, a short 'shaving-brush' frontal plume supported by a British Hussar officer's plume holder. Provision for a side plume. One circular side support and half only of the graduated chin scales. Original stout leather sweat band and lining. Both peaks leather lined, the lining to the back peak perished, otherwise good overall condition.

Lot 7

FRENCH 1ST EMPIRE, CARABINIERS, AN HISTORIC HELMET. A most rare and important original example retrieved from the battlefield of Waterloo. Period labels show that the helmet was formerly in the Jeanne Sully Collection, Fontainebleau and thence into the 'Waterloo Cotton Museum'. A small silver shield has been applied to the frontal plate stating, 'From Sgt-Major Cotton's Waterloo Museum Sale 1909'. The helmet is mainly in brass, the skull of sloping shape with pointed frontal peak, the high crest decorated over all with laurels, this with the original stiffened red horse hair plume. A plated white metal band around the lower skull terminates in a triangular frontal plate, this of brass with an applied white metal 'N'. This possibly a hurried replacement for the Royal Arms of Louis XVIII. Decorated circular side supports and tapered decorated chin scales, still with original buckle fastener. No lining remains, the skull dented and with one split, the front peak with holes and splits.

However, he is probably best know for producing a wide range of smaller scale lead figures for use in domestic settings. These are often based on classical Greek and Roman sculptures, as in this lot, or follow rural or pastoral themes.

FRENCH 1ST EMPIRE STYLE DRAGOON HELMET. The brass skull with similar crest, the front displaying the Imperial crown over the Eagle. The front peak and lower area of the skull with applied leopard skin decoration, large circular side supports and graded brass leather lined chin-scales. The front of the crest with a socketed brass ornament (loose), complete with a black horse-hair plume, a similar plume descends from the rear of the metal crest. A tall scarlet feather plume to the left side of the helmet. Black leather sweat band, top of the crest with minor dents, sweat band with some tears.

A FINE 19TH CENTURY PERSIAN KULAH KHUD OR HELMET, the wootz damascus skull finely decorated with a border of panels of calligraphy, surmounted with a further border of trefoil forms with linear decoration drawn up to the foot of the square section spike finial, the foot decorated with a band of scrolling fines, all highlighted in gold damascene, the front of the skull applied with two plume holders and an adjustable nasal bar, decorated to match, camail of small diameter butted links interspersed with brass rings formed into geometric designs.
