Crowned star mounted with laurel wreath and circlet “South Yorkshire 1st Volr. Batn.”; voided centre bearing strung bugle with White Rose of York lodged between the cords. Between the crown and the top of the wreath, an applied scroll “Defence not Defiance”. Three loops to reverse. VGC HQ at Wakefield. Previously 5th West Riding of Yorkshire RVC. Redesignated 1st VB. King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry in 1888.

Within the wreath, a pierced strap inscribed “Per Mare per Terram” on blue painted ground (originally enamel). To the centre, a silver globe in relief. Beneath the anchor, an applied silver strung bugle. Three loops to reverse. Gilt worn, overall heavy service wear. (KK 1091)

Eight pointed star mounted with blackened laurel wreath and five pointed star with raised flat centre bearing applied blackened crossed kukris surmounted by “1”. Two loops to reverse. VGC Became 1st Prince of Wales’s Own Gurkha Rifles in 1906 when he visited India, then 1st King George’s Own Gurkha Rifles when he ascended the throne upon Edward VII’s death in 1910.

To the centre of the cross, a circlet inscribed “First Surrey Rifles”; within the circlet, a strung bugle with “1” between the strings. Beneath the lower arm of the cross a scroll inscribed “Concordia victrix”. Three replacement hoop style loops to reverse. Generally VGC.

6th Durham Rifle Volunteers Victorian OR’s helmet plate. A good scarce white metal example. Eight pointed star, the topmost point displaced by a Crown. On the star, within a laurel wreath, a strap inscribed “6th Durham Rifle Volunteers”, strung bugle to centre. Three loops to reverse. VGC 6th Durham RV (Tyne Docks) formed part of 2nd Admin Bn. which was consolidated in February 1880 as 6th Durham RVC but redesignated 5th in November of that year. Provenance Bosleys December 2005, lot 53.

Duke of Cambridge’s Own (The Middlesex Regiment) OR’s helmet plate circa 1902-14. A good die-stamped brass example. Crowned star bearing laurel wreath, mounted with circlet inscribed “Middlesex”; within the circlet, resting in a laurel wreath, Prince of Wales’ plumes over Duke of Cambridge’s Coronet and Cypher on “Albuhera” scroll. Three loops to reverse. GC The Middlesex Regiment earned the soubriquet “The Die-Hards” from the Battle of Albuhera on 16th May 1811 when the British engaged a much larger French force resulting in heavy British casualties. Colonel Inglis of the 57th (later 1st Bn Middlesex) was wounded but refused to be carried from the field but insisted on being placed by the Colours and urged his men on with cries of “Die hard, my men, die hard”. Out of the 570 all ranks the 57th fielded that day, 22 Officers and 400 men were killed or wounded.

Lord Baden Powell wearing his famous “Lemon Squeezer” pattern hat, his right arm held hight with sword at the ready. Each mounted onto thier orioginal ebonized plinth with title plaque. GC good colour. Height 20 inches.

Royal Horse Guards George V / VI Period Officer’s helmet A good example, the skull of German silver decorated with gilt brass laurel and oak leaf design. Gilt rose pattern ear bosses support a gilt brass leather backed chin chain. To the front, helmet plate of half laurel/half oak leaf wreath surrounding the collar of the Order of the Garter and surmounted by a post 1901 Crown. Mounted to centre is a cut silver star of the Order of the Garter. The gilt pierced Garter is set onto blue enamelled ground, to the centre, the Cross of St. George in red enamel (small chip). To top of the helmet a gilt acanthus leaf holder supports the red plume. Complete with light blue silk lining (part shot). The overall condition is good, gilt bright.

Royal Dragoons Victorian Officer’s 1871 pattern helmet. A good restored example. The silvered skull surmounted by a gilt metal crosspiece and plume socket supporting a black hair plume with gilt rose boss. Skull ornamented with a laurel wreath above the front peak and an oak leaf band rising from the edge of the neck piece and terminating under the crosspiece at the top. To the front a gilt hobnail eight pointed star mounted with silver oval strap inscribed “The Royal Dragoons”; gilt Victorian Royal Crest to centre. Gilt rose pattern ear bosses support the velvet backed, plain burnished chinchain. Complete with replacement faux silk quilted lining. Some service wear, peak trim split at the point. A good display item.

First Surrey Rifles Victorian Officer’s regimental pattern helmet circa 1860. An extremely fine and rare example unique to this unit. One piece black fur felt skull with pronounced front and rear peaks surmounted by a slender gilt cruciform with supports the large fluted gilt spike. To the front a gilt crowned wreath, half laurel half palm, surrounding a circlet inscribed “First Surrey Rifles”. To the centre, a silver strung bugle with “1” between the cords. Across the top of the peak, attacked to the gilt lion’s head bosses which support the velvet backed chinchain, a narrow band of gilt metal. To each side, equidistant to the cruciform base and lion’s head, a small gilt rose. To the reverse, a slightly bigger rose with hook to support the chinchain in the upright position. Lightly quilted crimson silk adjustable wide sweatband. A few stitching faults to chinchain otherwise generally VGC. Formed as South London RVC 14th June, 1859 at Camberwell. From February, 1860 shown as 1st Surrey RVC. It would appear this was Surrey’s answer to the leather head-dress by 32nd Middlesex RVC known as “Six-foot Volunteer Guards”. Provenance. It is believed this was firstly in the late E.J Absolon`s Collection, and then in the late Bill Dear`s Collection.

1912 British Army Other Rank’s Home Service Pattern Helmet. A very good example, retaining brass cross piece and spike to the crown and both rosehead chinchain bosses. The interior with leather sweatband and pink paper issue label 1912. Very clean condition. Helmet plate and chinchain absent.

Sudan / Boer War White Foreign Service Helmet. A rare example of the pattern commonly been worn during the late Victorian campaigns. This example with six panels, with cotton covered zinc button to the crown. The interior with retaining original leather sweatband, with crimson silk edging. Maker’s stamp of Hawkes & Co. Complete with leather backed chin chain. The helmet retains a good shape, pagri is now absent, evidence of a badge having been worn to the front. GC

19th Continental Cuirassier’s Helmet. A good and impressive example The brass body surmounted by a brass comb, embossed with laurels and supporting black horsehair plume, which falls to the right. To the front a flaming grenade device within a wreath. Two circular boss’s, mounted with five pointed stars support a brass chin chain with leather backing. The interior with leather liner. Overall GC leather dry and now fitted with an incorrect feather plume.

WW1 Period Other Ranks 1908 Dated Wolseley Foreign Service Helmet A rare example, with WD and broad arrow marks and dated 1908, originally khaki, but subsequently whitened, with puggaree and leather internal headband. Glazed cotton lining to brim, ventilator with screw button, and brown leather chinstrap. Some wear.

Sherwood Foresters (Derbyshire Regiment) Victorian Officer’s helmet circa 1881-1901. A fine scarce example of the Home Service pattern blue cloth helmet complete with gilt metal spike, furniture and velvet backed chin chain (some stitching faults). To the front, a gilt crowned star mounted with full laurel wreath and silver Maltese Cross with applied gilt oak wreath and scrolls “The” “Derbyshire” “Regt” to the arms of the cross. To the centre, a silver Stag set on translucent blue enamel ground. To the base of the laurel wreath, an applied bi-part silver scroll inscribed “Sherwood Foresters”. Retains deep cream leather sweatband topped with crimson silk. Generally VGC. Housed in its japanned transit / storage tin (faint name). Sherwood Foresters (Derbyshire Regiment) redesignated Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment) in 1902.

Denbighshire Yeomanry Officer’s Albert Pattern Helmet. An extremely rare example of this short lived pattern of helmet, worn by the Regiment from 1840 until the adoption of the busby in 1863. The skull of black japanned metal mounted to the front wit a silver plated helmet plat of square end ray form, mounted to the centre with the Prince of Wales Plumes, this flanked by a title scroll “Denbighshire Yeomanry”. The skull is also decorated with silver plated laurel leaves and to each side large lion head bosses support a silvered interlinked chinchain with velvet backing. To the crown an acanthus leaf plume holder supports and scarlet plume with flower head boss. The interior with soft leather lining. The overall condition is very good, but the helmet has been professionally restored to museum exhibition standard. The plume is later. This pattern of helmet was adopted by the Officers of the Regiment in 1840 and the Other Ranks in 1841.

Montgomeryshire Yeomanry Cavalry Trooper’s helmet. A rare example of the pattern of helmet introduced to the regiment in 1882. Modelled on the 1871 pattern, with silvered skull, mounted with acanthus leaf decoration. To the front the helmet plate of a eight pointed backing star, mounted with a title strap “Montgomeryshire Yeomanry Cavalry”, within this a Welsh dragon. Two rose head bosses support a interlinked leather backed interlinked chin chain. The interior is with leather lining. Minor wear GC. Now fitted with alternative spike to the crown. Please note fitted with spike not plume holder.

WW1 Imperial German M1917 pattern camouflage steel helmet. The helmet retains original steel band lining and two leather pads. The shell is with clear camouflaged painted finish. The helmet retains it’s original brown leather chin strap, with two adjustment buckles and an unusual D buckle to the middle. Camouflage clear clean condition GC.
